Psychosocial characteristics of repeat aborters in Singapore.

"The psychosocial characteristics of 200 repeat aborters and 200 first time aborters [among] Singapore Chinese were compared with 200 antenatal patients. The repeat aborters started their sexual activities at an earlier age. They were married for a longer period, had more past pregnencies and more children, but their marital adjustments were slightly less satisfactory. There were no differences in education, housing, and religious practices among the three groups. The aborters knew more methods of contraceptive practices, but they tended to use unreliable methods. Their main reasons for seeking abortion were that their families were complete or that they wished to space births."

Induced abortion among the Pati Rabha women of Boko area, Kamrup district, Assam.

"Acceptance of induced abortion as a device of family planning among the Pati Rabha of Boko area [India] was studied. Out of 345 couples, practising various family planning devices, 86 (24.93%) accepted induced abortion. Of the total 629 conceptions of these 86 women, 137 (21.78%) conceptions were terminated by induced abortion.... The highest percentage (18.24%) of the induced abortion was done at the 6th order of pregnancy, 62.79% of the women accepted the induced abortion only once in their reproductive period. Most (91.86%) of the acceptors were illiterate and all of them were house wives." Consideration is given to the use of traditional methods of inducing abortions.

[Population development in the Czech Republic in 1993].

The "Czech Republic's demographic development in 1993 was characterized particularly by conspicuous abatement of nuptiality, continuance of natality decline, marked reduction of induced abortions...,continued decrease of infant and neonatal mortality rates and by considerable shrinkage of population increase due to migration. [A] steep fall of nuptiality became the most pronounced feature of population development in 1993.... The number of children born in 1993 in the Czech Republic was the [lowest] since 1918 and the crude birth rate...was the lowest...since 1785.... Marked diminution of abortions signifies another outstanding phenomenon of population development in the Czech Republic. There has [been a]...decline of deaths, [a] decrease of crude death rate and [a] medium life span extension." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND RUS)
