The developmental relationships between active cutaneous or local anaphylaxis, delayed hypersensitivity and worm expulsion were quantitatively examined in Trichinella-infected mice. The onset of both types of hypersensitivities and increase in sensitivity to antigen following an initial infection correlated with the onset and rate of elimination of adult worms. Mice passively sensitized with serum containing both IgG1 and IgE antibodies, but not IgG1 alone, expelled their worms at a faster rate in comparison to the controls. On the basis of these findings it is suggested that local allergic reactions mediated by anaphylactic antibodies are involved in the development of resistance to Trichinella infection.
Several factors, such as amount of allergen, vehicle, anatomic site, immunologic status and previous eczema, may influence delayed hypersensitivity reactions. In an extended model, we have studied the significance of previous allergic contact dermatitis for elicitation of delayed hypersensitivity to nickel in 25 nickel-allergic females. On 3 occasions, 8, 4 and 1 months before the final challenge patch testing, an experimental allergic contact dermatitis from nickel was induced on the lower back. At the challenge patch testing, 4 identical dilution series of nickel were tested on 4 areas on the lower back 3 with previous but healed dermatitis and 1 control area. The tests were read in a blind way. A significantly higher test reactivity was found at the areas with a previous allergic contact dermatitis, the shorter the time interval between the previous provocation and the challenge, the stronger the reaction. These results may be of importance for the understanding of factors contributing to chronicity of allergic contact dermatitis.
The ability of spleen T cells from mice inoculated with influenza virus to transfer delayed hypersensitivity increases after 5 days culture in the presence of TCGF and influenza virus or its hemagglutinin. Enriched T cells have also a greater ability to bind viral hemagglutinin than cells which were not cultured and restimulated with either antigen. The results suggest the selection in vitro of specific antigen-binding T cells, able to transfer delayed hypersensitivity.

Twenty-seven severely injured patients had antibody response to gram-negative organisms measured of whom 25 also had skin testing. Twenty-three patients (92%) were anergic at admission. Injury Severity Scores were greater in patients who remained anergic for three weeks compared with patients whose skin tests became positive. Patients with major infection had longer anergy duration than uninfected patients. Twenty-two (81%) of 27 anergic patients mounted antibody responses. Initial bacterial contamination determined the clinical outcome and antibody response. Six of eight patients with moderate contamination mounted IgM responses to all organisms and/or an IgG response to Escherichia coli, and they remained uninfected. Of the other two patients, one died, and the other developed chronic infection. Seven of eight patients with heavy contamination developed major sepsis despite mounting several antibody responses. Six patients without contamination mounted no antibody responses and remained uninfected.
