Adolescent girls in distress: a high-risk intersection.

Adolescent girls in distress are at high risk due to their location at the intersection of three populations at risk: adolescents, females, and those in social distress. The first part of this article specifies the parameters of the population in terms of behavioral and personality features, based on empirical research in Israel as well as the United States. The second part discusses the main characteristics of each of the three populations, with special emphasis on the components of transition in each. The third part develops an integrative theoretical model that illustrates the uniqueness of this group and its problems, and that may serve as a basis for the development of diagnostic and treatment tools for helping these girls. In this model, the profiles of adolescents in general, adolescent boys, adolescent girls, and adolescent girls in distress are compared. The comparison is made in terms of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development, interpersonal relationships, and status in the family. Comparison of the profiles reveals that adolescent girls in distress are located at the extreme end of the spectrum of the six developmental areas. Implications of the findings are discussed in terms of the inconsistency between messages on various levels: explicit versus implicit; intrafamilial versus social; and expectation versus opportunity. It is concluded that the specific needs of this group require the establishment of an appropriate policy as well as a variety of strategies, including nonconventional techniques, for creating a multidimensional intervention program.

The high mannose oligosaccharides of Dictyostelium discoideum glycoproteins contain a novel intersecting N-acetylglucosamine residue.

Previous studies have shown that the majority of the asparagine-linked high mannose oligosaccharide units present on the lysosomal enzymes of the slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum contain mannose 6-sulfate and mannose 6-phosphate residues, the latter being diesterified to methyl groups. Using a variety of techniques, including NMR spectroscopy and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, we have found that many of these oligosaccharides also contain an N-acetylglucosamine residue linked beta 1-4 to the mannose residue linked alpha 1-6 to the beta-linked core mannose. (Formula: see text) As far as we are aware, this is the first description of an intersecting N-acetylglucosamine residue in this position on a high mannose oligosaccharide.

Pattern of intersecting fractures and direction of fire.

In gunshot wounds of the skull, the pattern of intersecting fractures may be used to verify the direction of fire. It may be the only indicator of direction, if overlying skin is destroyed or inconclusive and if bevelling is absent in gunshot defects of thin temporal bone.

[Techniques for determining position from more than two radiographs intersecting at arbitrary angles in brachytherapy].

The least squares method and geometrical solution for calculating position were used in the two-projection method. Five coordinate systems were defined as a normal system, image system on film intersecting the beam central axes at an arbitrary angle and the projection, virtual coordinate and virtual image coordinate systems with beam central axis as one of the three coordinate axes to determine the geometrical relationship between a point and image on the film. Normal coordinates of the point were calculated by six geometrical solution sets and two forms of the least squares method using the rotation matrixes of the coordinate systems. One least squares method solves simultaneous nonlinear equations, and the other derives a strict solution from simultaneous linear equations. The latter least squares method has little physical meaning and is not as useful as the former. Although the former has physical meaning, the iterative approximation method should be used to determine position since a strict solution cannot be obtained directly. By these least squares methods, position is determined with less error using the projections at more than two focal spots.

RNA pseudoknot modeling using intersections of stochastic context free grammars with applications to database search.

A model based on intersections of stochastic context free grammars is presented to allow for the modeling of RNA pseudoknot structures. The model runs relatively fast, having the same order running time as stochastic context free grammar parsers. The model is shown to be able to perform database searches and find RNA sequences which resemble RNA pseudoknots which bind biotin. The problem domain of RNA biotin binders has significance in the support of the RNA world model of early life on earth.

Rheumatoid arthritis in the Pima Indians: the intersection of epidemiologic, demographic, and genealogic data.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features and familial distribution of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the Pima Indians. METHODS: From 1965 through 1990, all cases of RA as defined by the American College of Rheumatology (formerly, the American Rheumatism Association) 1987 criteria or all cases of seropositive, erosive disease as defined by the Rome criteria were identified in individuals who were age 20 years and older and were of 50% or more Pima/Tohono-O'odham heritage. Radiographs were reviewed by 2 musculoskeletal radiologists who were blinded to case status. Kinship coefficients were used to evaluate familial aggregation. RESULTS: Eighty-eight RA cases were identified from this population-based sample. Over 66% of the cases had seropositive disease, over 60% had erosive disease, and over 40% had subcutaneous nodules. Of the 88 RA cases, 40 were members of families with more than 1 RA case. The remainder were simplex cases. CONCLUSION: In this population, clinical markers of severe RA were present in a majority of cases. The presence of familial aggregation for RA in the Pima Indians suggests underlying genetic factors in disease pathogenesis.
