A clinical trial on yu cong tang in treatment of senile dementia.

Yu Cong Tang ([symbol: see text]), a TCM decoction, was used to treat senile dementia. It has the action of invigorating the spleen, reinforcing the kidney, nourishing yin, strengthening yang, improving blood circulation, dredging the channels, removing phlegm and restoring consciousness. CT, EEG, REG, Hb, PaO2, Tch, TG and 17-OHCS were tested, showing significant differences (P < 0.05 or < 0.01) before and after the treatment. Remarkable improvement was found in clinical symptoms, and the effective rate was 94.1%. Significant differences were found between the TCM and western medicine (WM) groups in symptom improvement (P < 0.05-0.01) and therapeutic results (P < 0.001).

[Diuretic effect of liniaoling(KLP)].

Experimental results have shown that KLP taken orally helps promote the diuretic action of normal Wistar rats, decrease the urine volume of debilitated rats and increase the urine volume of BPH rats. It has also been shown that KLP(i.v.) can increase the urine volume of anesthetic rats and reduce the remnant urine. In addition, KLP can contract the smooth muscle of rats and rabbits.

[Clinical study of physiological age in accordance with the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine].

OBJECTIVE: TCM and western geriatric medical principles were used to study the assessment of aging in mankind. METHODS: The authors studied and examined 387 healthy subjects ranging from 45 to 69 years of age. Its indices included 24 TCM senility syndromes, 5 western medical neurophysiological indices. Thereafter, regression analysis was used to deduce a TCM-WM aging formula. RESULTS: Data from all clinical subjects were processed using integrated TCM-WM, physiological age formula to determine the physiological ages (Y) and their corresponding calendar ages (y). The mean values of the age differential of zero, and a standard deviation of 2.29 years were calculated. From statistical view point, a 95 percentage is an acceptable normal value range. Also, as the objective of the aging assessment only used the higher end of the range. I.E., it is considered there is excessive aging when physiological age is higher than calendar age by 3.37 years. In the process of conducting regression analysis, the authors also discovered that LPO can increase TCM senility syndrome score, whereas CuZnSOD decrease it. CONCLUSIONS: The above clinical study showed that the regression analysis and age-related TCM indices can comprehensively reflect the natural process of aging in mankind. It also demonstrated the highly predictive nature of TCM senility syndrome score.

[Effect of reinforcing qi and moistening intestine oral liquid on anorectal manometry of asthenia type constipation patients].

OBJECTIVE: To study the change of anorectal manometry in asthenia type constipation patients and effect of reinforcing Qi and moistening intestine oral liquid (RQMI) on it. METHODS: The fotal of 135 cases were divided into healthy group, RQMI treated group, Maren pill (MRP) treated group and prepulside (PPS) treated group, their anal maximal voluntary squeeze pressure, rectoanal contraction reflex, rectoanal inhibitory reflex, defecation reflex, rectal volume sensory threshold and rectal maximal tolerable volume were observed. RESULTS: The rectal sensory function of patients weakened obviously and anal sphincter reactivity reduced as compared with those of healthy person (P < 0.01), and both were improved by RQMI treatment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: RQMI is superior to MRP and prepulside in improving anorectal dynamic abnormality in constipation patient of asthenia type.

[Comparative study of modulating effect of kidney tonifying recipe and spleen invigorating recipe on T-lymphocyte apoptosis in corticosterone treated rats].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the modulating effect of Kidney tonifying recipe (KTR) and Spleen invigorating recipe (SIR) on T-lymphocyte apoptosis (TLA) in corticosterone treated rats (CTR). METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative analysis on activation-induced TLA was conducted by transmission electron microscope and TUNEL labelled flow cytometry detection. RESULTS: TLA percentage of CTR was 45.87 +/- 7.22%, while that of normal control rats was 34.25 +/- 6.47%, the difference between them was significant (P < 0.01). TLA percentage of Youguiyin treated rats was 35.90 +/- 7.39%, and that of Bushen Yishou capsule treated rats was 36.20 +/- 9.14%, compared with that of CTR, P < 0.01 and P < 0.05 respectively. TLA percentage of the SIR treated group was 36.92 +/- 11.82%, which was different insignificantly as compared with that of CTR. CONCLUSION: TLA susceptibility was significantly enhanced in CTR. Both KTRs (Youguiyin and Bushen Yishou capsule) had down-regulating effect on TLA, while the effect of SIR was insignificant, suggesting that down-regulating activation-induced TLA may be one of the important mechanisms of KTR in improving T-lymphocyte function in CTR.

[Effect of baoyuantang on erythroid progenitor and clinical observation in chronic renal failure patients].

The erythroid colony formating ability and the therapeutic efficacy were investigated in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) before and after treatment with baoyuantang. The results showed that the number of CFU-E, BFU-E of bone marrow was found lower in CRF patients than that in normal controls, and there was inhibitory action in the CRF serum on the number of CFU-E, BFU-E of normal human bone marrow. After treatment with baoyuantang, the amount of Hb was increased and creatinine decreased in CRF patients, and its effective rate reached 83.3%. The above-mentioned inhibitory action in CRF serum was also reduced post-treatment. The results indicated that baoyuantang could increase the ability for proliferation and differentiation of erythroid progenitor and adjust anemia in CRF patient.

[Effect of aging on the syndrome of essential debility and evil reality--an exploration on mechanism of senility by traditional Chinese medicine].

Effect of aging on essential debility and evil reality was explored by an epidemiological investigation of clinical syndrome with TCM in 878 cases of middle and old-aged patients, inquiring into their relation of senility with visceral weakness and stagnation of Qi, blood stasis, and phlegm turbid. The results indicated that (1) several viscera, feeble and damaged, were the basis of senility, and the feeble kidney was the stress; (2) the syndrome of stagnation of Qi, blood stasis and phlegm turbid speeded up process of senility. The mechanism of feeble phenomena appeared in the middle-old aged patients is that with the rise of age in the patients observed there was interaction between the feeble visceral function and the syndrome of stagnation of Qi, blood stasis and phlegm turbid, that is, there was interaction between essential debility and evil reality. Essential debility may lead to evil reality and the latter will worsen essential debility. Thus, on repeating themselves in alternate cycles, a systemic hypofunction will be formed up to exhaustion. Therefore, "to nourish essential debility first and to purge evil reality second" should be considered as an essential direction of preparing anti-aging drugs in TCM.

Effects of Chinese herbal medicine on bone structure and function.

This study examined the effects of four-months of treatment using Chinese herbal Shu Di Shan Zha Formula on bone health. Fourteen Australian menopausal women participated in this paired study and completed all the tests at the commencement, 4th month (when the treatment group and control group cross over) and the 8th month (end) of the study. Data from bone structure and function tests (broadband ultrasonic attenuation--BUA and velocity of sound--VOS), biomarkers of bone turnover (osteocalcin--OSTN and urinary pyridum crosslinks--PYR and D-PYR) were collected from each subject. Results showed that Shu Di Shan Zha Formula was able to affect the level of BUA, and reduce the level of D-PYR in menopausal women.
