A histological survey was conducted on 604 pairs of adrenal glands from yellow (Papio cynocephalus) and olive (Papio anubis) baboons used in drug safety evaluation studies. Spontaneous lesions were found in 372 glands--34 of which had more than one change. Cortical lesions consisted of accessory nodules (190), nodular hyperplasia (7), hepatoadrenal adhesion (18) and partial fusion (1), focal mineralization (20), ectopic bone marrow (6), and focal fatty change (60). Medullary lesions were confined to focal lymphocytic (66) and plasma cell (1) infiltrates.

Detailed discussion of diseases of the adrenals in children where surgery may be indicated, seen from the paediatric point of view. Following differentiation between adrenal insufficiency and adrenal hyperfunction, as well as adrenal haemorrhage--where differential diagnosis is often rather difficult--the tumours of the zona glomerulosa, fasciculata and reticularis as well as of the adrenal medulla are presented and their signs and symptoms, their clinical hormonal diagnosis, localisation diagnosis and therapy are described.
CT examinations of 6 years served as basis for the incidence of hormonally inactive space-occupying masses at the adrenal. Of a total of 25,000 patients, 313 (1.3%) suffered from disease of the adrenals, and of these 261 patients had a hormonally inactive adrenal tumour. Adenomas were the most frequent space-occupying growths (101 patients), followed by metastases of the adrenals (77 patients), whereas adrenal carcinomas (4 patients), myelolipomas (3 patients), ganglioneuromas (3 patients) adrenal cysts (3 patients) and adrenal haemorrhages (2 patients) were rare findings.
A survey of computed tomographic (CT) findings in adrenal pathology is given based on a series of 50 patients examined over a period of 18 months. CT is an accurate non-invasive method of adrenal imaging and is the method of choice as primary radiological investigation in patients suspected of having adrenal disease or recurrent adrenal tumor.
