Spray-fogging of hospital rooms with a quarternary ammonium disinfectant was found to be an effective means of reducing the number of detectable airborne and surface bacteria. The level of bacterial contamination in hospital rooms was determined before and after fogging by means of the gravitational fallout method, the petri dish swab technique, and volumetric air-sampling procedures. Rooms vacated by patients infected with staphylococci, streptococci, pseudomonads, and salmonellae were tested and found to be effectively decontaminated of most of the detectable organisms by the fogging procedure.
A method has been developed which allows simultaneous determination of three linear alkyl trimethylammonium salts. Dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride are widely used as main active ingredients of lysing reagents for blood cell analyzers which perform white blood cells differential determination into two or more sub-populations by impedance analysis. The ion-pair on styrene-divinyl benzene chromatographic phase looks like a suitable, reliable and long term stable tool for separation of such quaternary compounds. The detection based on suppressed conductivity was chosen because of the lack of significance chromophores. A micromembrane suppressor device compatible with high solvent concentration (up to 80%) was used in order to minimize the conductivity background before the detection. In the present work we show how the chemical post column derivatization makes the alkyl chain detectable also by UV direct detection at 210 nm.

Benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride, and chlorhexidine gluconate were assayed quantitatively by a direct spectrophotometric method with bromthymol blue buffered at pH 7.5. The method shows good results at concentrations of 0--300 microgram/ml and in the presence of epinephrine bitartrate, phenylephrine hydrochloride, pilocarpine hydrochloride, and polyvinyl alcohol.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of a topically applied emulsion of an analgesic ammonium solution for the temporary treatment of pain associated with arthritis, tendinitis and bursitis. DESIGN: 100 subjects in a single center, presenting with chronic pain associated with arthritis, tendinitis, or bursitis trialed against placebo in a double-blind cross-over protocol. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Measures of treatment success include reduction in pain, improvement in clinical and/or mechanical evaluations, and evaluation of local and systemic adverse effects. Analysis was conducted at two weeks, after one week's clearance, and again after two weeks. RESULTS: For chronic neuralgia associated with arthritis, tendinitis, and bursitis, the test material had a positive effect at temporary pain reduction. Several subjects also recorded improvements in mechanical evaluations from baseline. Withdrawals due to systemic or local adverse reactions were minimal. CONCLUSION: A topical emulsion of a strong ammonium solution utilizing quaternary ammonium, enhanced with certain penetration enhancers, is effective for temporary relief of pain associated with arthritis, tendinitis, and bursitis.
The influence of undecylenic acid on the fungistatic effect of phenoxyethyldimethyldodecylammonium bromide (Domiphen bromide) against Trichophyton mentagrophytes was investigated. The unsaturated fatty acid was found to enhance the fungistatic activity of Domiphen bromide against this organism. The ratio of concentrations of these agents has a marked influence on the results of in vitro tests for antifungal action resulting in a completely different effect than heretofore noted in combination experiments against bacteria. The enhancing phenomenon is not particular to T. mentagrophytes, it was observed also with Candida albicans.
