Cirrhosis mortality and per capita consumption of distilled spirits, United States, 1949-1994: trend analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To describe, evaluate, and suggest interpretations for an observed aggregate-level relation between trends in mortality from cirrhosis and per capita consumption of distilled spirits in the United States. DESIGN: Trend analysis using data on US cirrhosis mortality and per capita alcohol consumption. RESULTS: There is a consistent long-term trend relation between mortality from cirrhosis and per capita consumption of distilled spirits in the United States from 1949 to 1994. Two instances of comparatively sharp drops in the consumption of spirits in the 1940s generated mixed results in predicting changes in cirrhosis mortality. CONCLUSIONS: An aggregate-level relation between trends in long-term cirrhosis mortality and the consumption of spirits falls considerably short of establishing a direct causal link between the two for individuals. Moreover, two sharp drops in the consumption of spirits generated only mixed results with respect to the short-term trend in cirrhosis. Nevertheless, the observed relation between the consumption of spirits and cirrhosis mortality merits further investigation.

Membrane distillation of human plasma ultrafiltrate and its theoretical applications to haemodialysis techniques.

Membrane Distillation (MD) is a technique that allows the extraction of water from aqueous solutions. The basic principle is that vapour, but not liquid water, can pass through hydrophobic micro-porous membranes, along a temperature gradient, with consequent separation of water from solutes. In this study we evaluated the possibility to utilise MD to extract water from Plasma Ultrafiltrate (PU) of patients with Chronic Renal Failure (CRF). The experiments were carried out in vitro by a hydro-phobic polypropylene hollow-fibre distillation module; PU was obtained by a CRF patient utilising a high permeability polisulphone membrane. The results show that water can be extracted by MD from PU of CRF subjects at a constant rate and that none of the substances analysed in PU was able to pass through the polypropilene membrane. In the future MD could integrate extra-corporeal blood purification techniques allowing the re-utilisation of plasmatic water thus ameliorating the treatment of uraemia.

Life testing of the vapor compression distillation urine processor assembly (VCD/UPA) at the Marshall Space Flight Center.

Wastewater and urine generated on the International Space Station (ISS) will be processed to recover pure water using vapor compression distillation (VCD). To verify the long-term reliability and performance of the VCD Urine Processor Assembly (UPA), life testing was performed at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) from January 1993 to April 1996. Two UPAs, the VCD-5 and VCD-5A, were tested for 204 days and 665 days, respectively. The compressor gears and the distillation centrifuge drive belt were found to have operating lives of approximately 4800 h, equivalent to 3.9 years of operation on ISS for a crew of three at an average processing rate of 1.76 kg/h (3.87 lb/h). Precise alignment of the flex-splines of the fluids and purge pump motor drives is essential to avoid premature failure after about 400 h of operation. Results indicate that, with some design and procedural modifications and suitable quality control, the required performance and operational life can be met with the VCD/UPA.

Preparation of samples for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis of phthalate and adipate esters in plasma and beverages by steam distillation and extraction.

Phthalate and adipate esters are present in relatively large amounts in the environment, resulting in their large blank values at analysis and making precise analysis difficult. We developed a highly sensitive analytical method for phthalate and adipate esters in plasma and beverages by lowering the blank values that interfere with analysis. The method uses a closed distillation cleanup system in which steam distillation and extraction are performed simultaneously. The recoveries from beverages and plasma were both satisfactory, ranging from 90.2 to 118.3%, relative standard deviation (RSD) = 2.8-5.3%, and 96.2-134.4%, RSD = 2.2-6.5%, respectively. The detection limits of dibutyl phthalate and di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate were 5 ng/mL, and those of diethyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate, and di-2-ethyl hexyl adipate were 10 ng/mL in rabbit plasma and beverages.

Influence of osmotic distillation on membrane absorption for the treatment of high strength ammonia wastewater.

Osmotic distillation (OD) was found to be a coupled process in membrane absorption (MA) for the treatment of high strength ammonia wastewater. As a result, ammonia could not be concentrated in absorption solution(AS) as expected. The inhibition of the coupled OD in MA process was investigated as well as various factors affecting the inhibition. The results indicated that the coupled OD can be effectively inhibited by heating concentrated solution and cooling dilute solution. It was also found that experimental minimum inhibition temperature difference(MITD) between concentrated and dilute solutions was different when using polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) and polypropylene(PP) membranes respectively, which could be ascribed to material properties, such as OD and membrane distillation (MD) coefficients of the membranes. Experimental MITDs were found to be higher than theoretical MITDs which were calculated using a simplified method.

Protective effect of distillate and redistillate of cow's urine in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes challenged with established genotoxic chemicals.

OBJECTIVE: From the ancient period cow's urine has been used as a medicine. In Veda, cow's urine was compared to the nectar. In Susrut, several medicinal properties of cow's urine have been mentioned and are known to cause weight loss, reversal of certain cardiac and kidney problems, indigestion, stomach ache, edema, etc. However, the literature and scripture did not mention the antigenotoxic properties of cow's urine. METHODS: In the present investigation, the antigenotoxic/antioxidant properties of cow's urine distillate and redistillate were studied in vitro. The antioxidant status and volatile fatty acid levels were determined. Actinomycin-D (0.1 micromol/L) and hydrogen peroxide (150 micromol/L) were used for inducing DNA strand break with 0.1% DMSO as negative control. Dose for the antigenotoxic effect of cow's urine was chosen from the dose response study carried out earlier. RESULTS: Both actinomycin-D and H202 caused statistically significant DNA unwinding of 80% & 75% respectively (P < 0.001) as revealed by fluorimetric analysis of DNA unwinding (FADU), and the damage could be protected with the redistilled cow's urine distillate (1, 50 & 100 microL) in simultaneous treatment with genotoxic chemicals. CONCLUSION: The redistillate of cow's urine was found to possess total antioxidant status of around 2.6 mmol, contributed mainly by volatile fatty acids (1500 mg/L) as revealed by the GC-MS studies. These fatty acids and other antioxidants might cause the observed protective effects.

[Determination of naphthenic acids in distillates of crude oil by gas chromatography/chemical ionization-mass spectrometry].

The petroleum carboxylic acids in 200-420 degrees C distillate of crude oil were separated by the extraction with column chromatography on an anion exchange resin. The effect of the composition and structure of naphthenic acids on separation were studied by the infra-red (IR) spectroscopic techniques. Naphthenic acids and iso-butane reagent gas were introduced into the ion source for chemical ionization, in which the ions represented by [M + C4H9]+ were used to calculate the relative molecular mass for each acid. Based on the mass spectra of pure fatty and naphthenic acids, in combination with the z-series formula CnH(2n + z)O2, the naphthenic acids can be classified into fatty, mono-, bi- ... hexa-cyclic types. The results indicated that the relative molecular mass range of naphthenic acids in this distillates was 170-510, and the carbon number range was C10-C35. The contents of bi-cyclic and tri-cyclic naphthenic acids were higher than others.

[Estimation of fatigue parameter and life-time prediction using SPT diagram for hydroxyapatite coating layer in 37 degrees C distilled water].

Lifetime and survival probability of brittle materials under given conditions of stress distribution, environment and component size can be predicted using an SPT (Strenght-Probability-Time) diagram. The SPT diagram for sintered hydroxyapatite (HAP) coated on the metal substrate via the fused glass was drawn and the safe working stress in 37 degrees C distilled water was estimated. The dynamic fatigue test carried out in 37 degrees C distilled water gave the fatigue parameter n = 19 for sintered HAP. This parameter is constant except that it depends on material and environment, and the greater the value of n, the greater the resistance to fatigue failure. For sintered HAP, therefore, the resistance to fatigue failure under this wet condition is low. To draw the SPT diagram, anchor points were taken from the fracture stress and time-to-failure data measured at 1 mm/min. The SPT diagram obtained suggested that a lifetime of 20 years with survival probability of 99.9% required the safe working stress of less than 3.2 MPa. The effects of accuracy of fatigue parameter on the uncertainty in SPT diagram were estimated.

Determination of ellagitannins in extracts of oak wood and in distilled beverages matured in oak barrels.

A method is described for determination of ellagitannins in ethanol-water extracts of oak wood and in distilled alcoholic beverages matured in oak barrels. It is based on the combined ellagic acid content according to ellagitannin structure. Hydrolysis was carried out in the presence of hydrochloric acid under reflux in a 100 degrees C oil bath for 3 h. Total ellagic acid was thus determined by liquid chromatography (LC), and the free ellagic acid content present in the ethanol-water media was subtracted, the difference being the combined ellagic acid content corresponding to ellagitannins. A 5 micron C18 column was used with detection at 254 nm. The method is specific for ellagitannins, which is an advantage over other analytical techniques for overall evaluation of these substances extracted from wood. Results for spirits distilled from wine, grain, and sugarcane were highly variable.

The lymphocytic basophilia after incubation of blood smears in distilled water.

The incubation of peripheral blood smears in distilled water frequently used for the control of the digestion with ribonuclease produced distinct changes of basophilic ribonucleic acid containing structures in peripheral lymphocytes. The alteration of these structures was apparently produced by the activity of the endogenous ribonuclease since it was reduced or prevented by the lowering of the temperature or addition of the ribonuclease inhibitor. In addition, marked differences were found between peripheral blood lymphocytes of healthy persons and patients suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia with respect to the sensitivity of lymphocytic basophilia to the incubation in distilled water.

Experimental studies on the persistence in distilled water of certain conditional pathogenic fungi.

The authors followed up the behaviour in distilled water of 8 fungus strains belonging to four species (Candida albicans, C. krusei, Geotrichum candidum and Rhodotorula) kept at various temperatures (i.e. +4 degrees, +18 degrees and 25 degrees C). The average and the maximum survival periods were found to be as follows: C. albicans--476/1138 days, C. krusei--411/1138 days, G. candidum--127/219 days, and R. rubra--139/226 days. All strains revealed periodically multiplication bursts of variable intensity depending on the kind of species and the temperature at which the cultures were maintained. These findings plead for the existence of cryptic periods of growth in fungi, too. Although, during the experiments, the variants occurred as concerns the morphological and cultural characteristics, sugar fermentation, sugar and nitrate assimilation, germ tube formation did not undergo any modifications. The pathogenic characteristics of C. albicans strains for rabbit were retained even after 1096 days maintenance in distilled water at 18 degrees C.

Incorporation and analysis of ultrasonically nebulized distilled water challenges in an epidemiologic study of asthma and bronchial reactivity.

The usefulness of an ultrasonically nebulized distilled water (UNDW) challenge as a screening procedure was tested in an on-going epidemiologic study of asthma and bronchial reactivity. Sixty-six individuals underwent a methacholine challenge, an UNDW challenge, and were administered a standardized respiratory disease questionnaire. To perform the UNDW challenge, subjects inhaled increasing volumes of nebulized distilled water while breathing tidally. Thirty-eight asthmatics, two former asthmatics, 14 normal, and 12 allergic subjects, were included. Sixty-six percent of the asthmatics dropped 20% from their baseline FEV1 during the UNDW challenge. Only one allergic or normal subject had a similar drop. The Pearson's correlation coefficient between methacholine and UNDW challenges was 0.60. If positive, an UNDW seems to be highly specific in supporting a diagnosis of asthma, while methacholine challenges are more useful in verifying the presence of non-specific bronchial reactivity.

Liquid chromatographic determination of scopoletin in hydroalcoholic extract of oak wood and in matured distilled alcoholic beverages.

A liquid chromatographic (LC) method is described for determination of the coumarins esculin, umbelliferone, scopoletin, and 4-methyl umbelliferone in hydroalcoholic extracts of oak wood and in matured distilled alcoholic beverages. Samples were injected directly into the LC column (30 cm, 5 micron C18) and detected by fluorescence detector. Under these experimental conditions, only scopoletin (detection limit, 200 pg) was found in hydroalcoholic oak wood extracts and in spirits matured in oak wood. Applications of this method to spirits distilled from wine, grain, and sugar cane aged in oak barrels showed that amounts varied from 0.026 to 1.57 ppm.

The use of methacholine inhalation, methacholine skin testing, distilled water inhalation challenge and eosinophil counts in the evaluation of patients presenting with cough and/or nonwheezing dyspnea.

Twenty-four patients presenting with cough and/or nonwheezing dyspnea were evaluated with methacholine inhalation challenge (MC), distilled water inhalation challenge (DC), intracutaneous tests to varying concentrations of methacholine, total eosinophil counts (TEC), sinus and chest x-rays. We found a statistically significant difference (P less than .005) in the mean TEC in those patients with a positive MC test and those with a negative test. Hyperreactivity of the airways to methacholine in asthmatics is not found in the skin. Distilled water inhalation did not serve to substitute for MC as a test of hyperreactive airways. The TEC is an excellent screening test as a predictor of patients with cough or dyspnea who have hyperreactive airways.

Determination of crude protein in animal feeds, using block digestion followed by steam distillation: collaborative study.

A method consisting of digesting animal feeds in a block digestor and determining ammonia by steam distillation followed by titration has been evaluated and compared with the official final action Kjeldahl method, 7.016. Fifteen laboratories analyzed 5 feed samples and lysine monohydrochloride. Statistical analysis showed that results from the 2 methods were comparable. The distillation technique has been adopted as official first action as an alternative technique for ammonia determination from the digest of the official final action block digestor method, 7.B11.

Steam distillation and gas-liquid chromatographic determination of triallate and diallate in milk and plant tissue.

A procedure based on steam distillation is described for the determination of residues of the thiocarbamate herbicides diallate and triallate. The herbicides are steam-distilled directly from aqueous suspensions of milk and plant samples and trapped in hexane. After column cleanup on either activated Florisil or silica cartridges, samples are quantitated by gas-liquid chromatography. Recoveries of diallate and triallate from milk, lettuce, peas, corn, canarygrass seed and straw, and flax straw ranged from 77 to 96%.

Improved Storherr tube for assisted and sweep co-distillation cleanup of pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and pentachlorophenol from animal fats.

A procedure is presented for the simultaneous extraction from animal fat and quantitation of 15 pesticide residues, 4 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) formulations, and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Silanization of the Storherr tube packing reduces thermal decomposition and allows for residue recoveries in excess of 88% from pork, beef, chicken, sheep, and rabbit fat. This Storherr tube performs well in either the assisted distillation or sweep co-distillation mode of operation. Detection limits of 2-5 ppb for the pesticides and 10 ppb for the PCBs are readily attained.

A specifically induced bronchoconstriction by distilled water in children and adults.

Respiratory function (FVC, FEV1, FMF and FEF200-1200) was measured before and after nebulized distilled water in 68 subjects divided in the five following groups: a) 21 healthy children (age range 7 to 15 years); b) 10 children with asthma (age range 6 to 11 years); c) 10 children with cystic fibrosis (age from 5 to 15 years); d) 7 children with different diseases of the respiratory system (age range from 6 to 11 years); e) 20 healthy adults (aged from 18 to 33 years). The only statistically significant changes were noted in the asthmatic children group. We conclude that a specifically induced bronchoconstriction by nebulized distilled water is a good mean of assessing bronchial lability.
