The interrelationship of the time courses of soreness and oedema, and of force and phosphorus metabolites after eccentric exercise was studied. Eight male subjects performed 120 maximal eccentric contractions with their left forearm flexors. Soreness, maximal force, flexion and extension elbow angle, and creatine kinase and myoglobin efflux were followed for 96 h after exercise. For equal periods T1 and T2 relaxation times and muscle cross-sectional area were calculated from magnetic resonance images as indications of oedema, and inorganic phosphate (P(i)) and phosphocreatine (PCr) were measured with magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Soreness on extension increased at 1 h (P = 0.043), T1 and T2 (both P = 0.01) and soreness when the arm was pressed (P = 0.028) at 24 h, and muscle cross-sectional area increased at 48 h (P = 0.01) after exercise. Soreness on extension reached a maximum at 48 h, the other four parameters at 72 h. All parameters related to oedema, and soreness, showed an increasing pattern for the period after exercise as a whole, but the largest increase between two points of measurement occurred earlier for soreness than for oedema. Creatine kinase increased significantly from baseline from 24 h onwards (P = 0.017) and myoglobin from 1 h onwards (P = 0.012). The P(i):PCr ratio differed from baseline for the first time 24 h after exercise (P = 0.018), increased to 225%, and then remained on a plateau until 72 h. Maximal isotonic force decreased to 53% at 1 h (P = 0.012).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The ability of the 90 degrees-t1-180 degrees pulse sequence to produce accurate dipole-dipole coupling information in solids is investigated. To this end, the experimental 31P spin echo decays are measured for eighteen crystalline phosphides and phosphorus chalcogenides and compared with simulations, based on the known internuclear distances in these compounds. The experimental results are generally found accurate in compounds where the dominant contribution to the dipole-dipole coupling arises from nuclei in structurally inequivalent sites with large chemical shift anisotropies. For this situation, the quantum mechanical "flip-flop" term in the dipolar Hamiltonian is suppressed and the dipole-dipole coupling is entirely heteronuclear in character. All of those compounds that do not obey this condition show accelerated spin echo decays due to a fractional contribution of the flip-flop term and possibly incomplete refocusing of chemical shift terms on the time scale of the experiment. The results confirm on an empirical basis that the spin echo NMR technique can provide accurate dipole-dipole coupling information (and thus distance distributions) in disordered solids and glasses.

In the present work a Fenton's treatment for the oxidation of a phosphorous compounds mixture, simulating a match manufacturing industry wastewater, were studied. Experimental tests were performed on three sample solutions at a phosphorus concentration of 250, 500 and 750 mg/l. In each solution an equal amount of sodium phosphite and sodium hypophosphite was dissolved. The investigation of pH, temperature and reagents ratio on the oxidation rate led to the individuation of the optimal process operating conditions. The results show that Fenton's reagent provides a powerful conversion to phosphate of the phosphorous solution. In particular at pH=3.5 and 20 degrees C a residual concentration of non oxidized phosphorus in compliance with the Italian regulation limits for industrial wastewater disposal. Tests performed on sample solution of 500 mg/l P and 750 mg/l P by adding hydrogen peroxide and bivalent iron in three sequential steps led to similar reaction efficiencies to tests carried out adding both Fenton's reagents in one step, but with a remarkably lower reagents consumption.

[reaction: see text] Reductive cleavage of the carbon-sulfur bond present in S-alkyl-thionocarbonates (xanthates) was achieved by high-yielding, tin-free radical reactions based on phosphorus reagents. The combination hypophosphorous acid/triethylamine/AIBN led to fast, efficient, and smooth formation of the alkane. Reduction with diethyl phosphite was sufficiently slow to permit sequential intermolecular addition of a 2-oxoalkyl xanthate onto an olefin followed by cleavage of the newly formed carbon-sulfur bond.
