Biometry of primate lenses during immersion in preservation media.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the condition of human lenses (obtained from an eye bank) and of fresh monkey lenses, and to determine the effects of maintaining these lenses in various liquid preservation media. METHODS: Freshly excised human and monkey lenses were maintained for 5 h in one of four solutions (Balanced Saline Solution [BSS], Ringer's Solution, Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium with Ham's F-12 [DMEM/F-12/F-12], and Tissue Culture Medium 199 [TC-199]) using a custom-designed, temperature-regulated testing cell. A modified optical comparator and digital camera were used to photograph magnified lens profiles and measure lens diameter and thickness. Lens volume was then calculated assuming rotational symmetry about the optical axis. RESULTS: Seven of the 33 human lenses exhibited extensive swelling and separation of the capsule from the lens cell mass prior to the incubation. During incubation, for 12/22 of the remaining human and 27/27 of the monkey lenses, thickness increased by 1.0-1.8%, diameter decreased by 0.7-1.6% and the volume was essentially unchanged. Substantial swelling and capsular separation were observed in 10 of the 22 human lenses, 7/10 for those maintained in salt solutions, and 3/12 for those in tissue culture media. Lens volumes increased by an average of 6.8%, due to an 8.7% increase in the thickness, while the diameter decreased by 0.9%. These changes appeared to be independent of postmortem time and donor age. CONCLUSIONS: Culture media are more effective than simple salt solutions in maintaining lens physical integrity during short-term incubations. Substantial uptake of water, accompanied by separation of the capsule from the lens cell mass, occurs at various stages during storage and experimental manipulations in >60% of human lenses obtained from the eye bank. Data obtained with such lenses will not be representative of the true ex vivo state. It is recommended that lenses be assessed to determine if swelling has taken place before acceptance of data.

[Biometry of intraocular lenses using Pentacam Scheimpflug images].
PURPOSE: To compare differences in intraocular lens (IOL) decentration, tilt and anterior chamber depth (ACD) using Pentacam-Scheimpflug System images in eyes having phacoemulsification with implantation of 1 of 3 types of IOLs. METHODS: This study comprised 117 cataractous eyes of 109 patients having phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. The eyes were randomized into 3 groups based on IOL type. The degree of IOL decentration, tilt and ACD was measured using Oculus Pentacam System 1 day and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. RESULTS: There was no significant change during the 12 months follow-up period in decentration or tilt in each group (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference among the groups in IOL decentration or tilt at any time point (P > 0.05). The ACD did not change after surgery in the Acrysof SA60AT group (P > 0.05) but showed significant shallowing in the Tecnis Z9001 group and the Sensar AR40e group (P < 0.05). There was significant difference among the groups in ACD only at 1 day after surgery (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The IOL stability in eyes that received a 1-piece Acrysof SA60AT IOL with flexible haptics was better than the results with normal capsular bag IOL implantation and an intact continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis that received a 3-piece IOL with rigid haptics.
[Histochemistry, immunocytochemistry, and biometry of muscle fibers and their innervation of the peroneus longus muscle].
The morphology of the peroneus longus muscle of the Chinese quail was studied in relation to partial behavorial characteristics. On the basis of the actomyosin ATPase reaction after alkaline and acid preincubation, three fiber types are revealed. The indirect immunofluorescence, using specific antibodies against 'slow' myosin from the human vastus lateralis muscle, provokes a strong reaction on the small fiber type. The characteristics of the innervation revealed by the cholinesterase activity, concentrated in the synaptic gutters and the direct study of the nerve fibres, show focal, mono-axonal 'en plaques' endings, typical of the phasic motor system.
Use of biometry and keratometry for determining optimal power for intraocular lens implants in dogs.
Axial length and corneal curvature were determined by use of A-scan ultrasonography and keratometry on both eyes of dogs of various breeds, sizes, and ages. Mean axial length was 20.43 +/- 1.48 mm; axial length was not related to age or sex, but was significantly greater (P = 0.047) in dogs of larger breeds. Mean corneal curvature was 39.94 +/- 2.61 diopters. Dogs of large breeds had significantly (P less than 0.001) flatter corneas. Mild, roughly symmetric astigmatism was detected in a majority of dogs. Use of mean values in a theoretic artificial intraocular lens power equation suggests that aphakic dogs require an implant of approximately 40 diopters to achieve emmetropia.
[Suction cup ocular pressure versus Vörösmarthy oculopression. Biometry differences].
In a 20-min follow-up after oculopression, biometric measurements were taken before, immediately after, and 5, 10, 15 and 20 min after finishing oculopression. Thirty-two eyes were measured by ultrasound using the immersion technique with a 10 MHz A-scan probe. Sixteen cataract patients more than 50 years of age and 16 healthy young subjects up to 30 years of age took part in the study. Oculopression was performed either with a Honan Oculopressor or with a Mikuni and Yoneyama suction-cup oculodynamometer. The anterior chamber depth showed higher initial deepening following Honan oculopression, whereas the length of the vitreous was found to be shorter with the same method. Suction-cup oculopression revealed no distinct changes in these compartments. Nevertheless, 10 min after oculopression, there was no statistically significant difference between the two oculopression techniques. When comparing the age groups, the cataract patients showed more express change than the younger subjects.

[Changes in the biometry of the sex organs of sheep after estrus synchronization and superovulation in the breeding period].
In twenty ewes of the Slovak Merino breed coming from a demonstration farm at Zemplínska Teplica, to the age of two-three years biometrical variations of the sex organs and overall follicular response to PMSG and PGF2 alpha administration were investigated in the autumn period (October-November). In the ewes of all groups the heat was synchronized by i. m. administration of PGF2 alpha (Oestrophan Spofa) at a dose of 125 micrograms in the interval of 11 days. On the ninth day the ewes of the second and fourth group were given 1000 i. u. of PMSG (Antex Leo, Denmark), the ewes of the third group 750 i. u. of PMSG. The ewes of the third and fourth group were administered at the same time 50,000 i. u. vitamin A (Axerophtol Spofa) (each group). The weight and dimensions of the sex organs were investigated. The results demonstrate that the administration of PMSG in the mating period increases significantly the weight of oviducts and horns of uterus in the ewes while there are no variations of the weight of the other sex organs and of their length, or it is lower than in the ewes of the control group. The overall follicular response was not influenced by the higher weight of ovaries.

Axial length and the average ophthalmologist--is biometry worthwhile?
The refractive predictability of 477 lens implants with powers calculated using biometric data and lens power formulas was reviewed and compared with postoperative refractions that would have been expected had standard power lenses been implanted. Eighty-nine percent of the calculated lenses were within 1.25 diopters and 98% were within 2.00 D of the desired refractions. Fifty-two percent and 73% of the standard lenses would have yielded these respective degrees of accuracy. Eyes grouped according to preoperative refractive error and those for which emmetropia or ametropia was predicted were similarly compared with similar results for all groups. The calculated lenses consistently provided better postoperative refractive predictability than could have been achieved with standard lenses.
[Biometry of the tibia].
This study investigates the relations between 67 tibia parameters. For this investigation, 30 human tibia of unknown sex and age were examined from the bone collection of the Department of Anatomy of the University of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid). Many tibia parameter relationship were established, which were correlated through statistical analysis. 3 groups of parameters correlations were established: antero-posterior diameters of the diaphysis; perimeters of the diaphysis and width of the proximal extremity of the bone. The authors present the statistical values of all the measurements, which are of great anthropological interest.
[Predictive value of biometry in early pregnancy in comparison with birth weight].
The authors have compared the biometric measurement of the first trimester of gestation (CRL, gestation sac volume, GS vol./CRL ratio) with the respective weights at birth, in order to determine possible correlations. The result have showed no newborns SGA with biometric measurement greater than the 90 degrees percentile in the first trimester of pregnancy, and also no newborns LGA with biometric measurements smaller than the 10 degrees percentile. The authors nevertheless conclude for an insufficient prediction of the parameters considered, cause the high percentage of false positives and false negatives.
