New reciprocal translocation t(5;10)(q33;q22) associated with atypical chronic myeloid leukemia.

We report a new chromosomal reciprocal translocation t(5;10)(q33;q22) in a 49-year-old man with atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (a-CML) and history of occupational exposure to petroleum products including benzene and other hydrocarbons. The t(5;10) (q33;q22) was found in 94% and 84% of metaphases in peripheral blood and bone marrow cells, respectively. Cytogenetic analysis of single colonies derived from granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM), and erythroid (BFU-E) hematopoietic progenitors showed that 88% and 40% of CFU-GM and BFU-E, respectively, had the t(5;10)(q33;q22). In contrast, peripheral blood T-lymphocytes, and cutaneous fibroblasts had normal 46,XY karyotype. Molecular analysis of the t(5;10)(q33;q22) translocation breakpoint is currently underway in order to identify genes located in this region which might provide insights into the pathogenesis of atypical myeloproliferative disorders.

[Health-related absenteeism among workers employed in various work environments].

The state of health in working people is determined by a number of factors among which working conditions and the kind of job performed play undoubtedly a crucial role. The observation and analysis of trends in sick absenteeism may provide indirect information on health problems of the occupationally active population. The aim of the analysis presented was to define the magnitude and the causes of temporary work disability among workers employed in individual branches of the national economy, and finally to identify high risk groups of workers because of their employment in specific working conditions. The statistical material used as the basis for the calculation of absenteeism indicators embraced the data on the number of work disability days, derived from a 15 representative sample of punched cards, concerning certificates of temporary work disability. In order to accomplish the objectives of the analysis, the trends in sick absenteeism observed before 1989, the period preceding the structural changes and the transformation of Polish economy were taken into consideration. The analysis indicates that the level of sick absenteeism in the branches of the national economy (forestry, building construction, transport, industry) and the proportion of chronic diseases in its structure prove the effect of working conditions on the workers' health. Considering individual branches of industry, the highest levels of sick absenteeism are observed in the following branches: mining for men (5.61), non-ferrous metals for women (10.04) and men (4.95), ferrous metallurgy for women (9.99) and men (4.93), and petroleum products for women (11.76). The analysis of sick absenteeism in the branches selected in view of hazardous working conditions shows that: (1) in many branches chemical hazards in the work environment are responsible for an increased sick absenteeism due to diseases of the circulatory system, particularly among men, mental disorders and neoplasms, both among men and women, and complications of pregnancy among women; (2) physical work overload increases sick absenteeism mainly due to diseases of the musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous systems, as well as due to cardiac disease and arterial hypertension; and (3) hot microclimate contributes to sick absenteeism because of diseases of the circulatory system, including cardiac disease and arterial hypertension, particularly among men, as well as acute and chronic respiratory diseases.

[Rapid assay for the assessment of a potential of chemical biocides to microbial destructors of industrial materials].

A colorimetric rapid assay for estimating the biocide potential of various chemicals towards metal biocorrosive and petroleum product degrading microbes was developed based on the reducing potential of live microbial cell. A water-soluble organic redox indicator, blue in the oxidized form and pink in the reduced form, was used as an indicator of the reducing potential of microbial cells. Once added to a suspension of vital microbial cells, it was reduced and changed in color. A good correlation between the results of this assay and viability control was obtained by employing surfactants and heavy metal ions.

Compositional analysis for identification of arson accelerants by electron ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Elemental compositions of each of 100 to 500 different constituents (i.e., every peak in a mass-to-charge ratio range, 50 < m/z < 300) of lighter fluid, kerosene, turpatine, gasoline, diesel fuel, and two brands of mineral spirits (and their weathered analogs) make possible direct identification of each accelerant in a experimental fire, based on electron ionization 6.0 Tesla Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (EI FT-ICR) ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry. Septum injection of as little as 500 nL of accelerant into an all-glass heated inlet system yields definitive elemental compositions (molecular formulas) based on accurate (< +/-1 ppm average error) mass measurement alone. Extraction and EI FT-ICR mass analysis of fire debris from a controlled burn of a couch with simple (lighter fluid) and complex (turpatine) ignitable liquid yielded dozens of elemental compositions serving as a unique "fingerprint" for each petroleum product, despite the presence of up to 249 additional extracted matrix and pyrolysis components. Forty-five of 56 lighter fluid constituents and 126 of 133 turpatine constituents (not counting 13C-containing species) were identified in the debris from a fire staged for each respective accelerant.

Humic acids enhanced removal of aromatic hydrocarbons from contaminated aquifers: developing a sustainable technology.

Contamination by gasoline and diesel fuels is a threat to groundwater resources. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which can represent up to 60% of volume in diesel fuels are of particular concern because many of them are carcinogenic and they are persistent, especially in oxygen-limited environment. Despite the development of alternative approaches, pump and treat continues to be the leading technology for the remediation of groundwater contaminated by gasoline and diesel fuels. The efficiency of this technology is however limited by the low solubility of the aromatic hydrocarbons. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of humic acids on the removal of aromatic hydrocarbons from petroleum products in groundwater aquifers and to evaluate the potential use of humic acids, as a cost effective additive, in groundwater and soil remediation. In order to prove the feasibility of using humic acid in the field, a pilot scale experiment was conducted in a model aquifer with a very dense monitoring network, providing controlled conditions only possible in a semi-artificial system. In addition, different sources of humic acids were compared with surfactants for their ability to bind PAHs.

Mechanism of radiation purification of polluted water and wastewater.

The paper summarizes the results of the studies on radiation purification of polluted water and wastewater conducted in the author's laboratory in cooperation with other institutions. The removal of heavy metals (cadmium, lead, chromium and mercury) from water and wastewater, the purification of wastewater from surfactant and petroleum products, molasses distillery slops, municipal wastewater in the aerosol flow, river water from colored natural organic pollutants, wastewater of dyeing complex and paper mill, the decomposition of some dyes, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine-containing organic compounds, formic acid, etc. were investigated in detail. As a rule, electron-beam treatment in combination with ordinary methods (biological, coagulation, adsorption, flotation, etc.) was used. The main attention is paid to the mechanism of purification of the studied systems. The role of redox reactions of primary products of water radiolysis and secondary short-lived species formed from pollutants, formation of precipitates capturing the pollutants etc. is discussed.

[The "dental amalgam syndrome" - an environmental somatization Syndrome? A comparison between chronic carbon monoxide intoxication and illness related to dental amalgam].

In 1940, during World War II, restrictions in import of petroleum products to Sweden necessitated the use of producer gas in motor traffic. In the following years, the incidence of acute carbon monoxide intoxications raised steeply. However, many patients with minor but longstanding exposition to producer gas exhibited a neurastenic syndrome (fatigue, headaches and vertigo) thought to be specific. In Stockholm, an epidemic of this syndrome can afterwards be traced to the personal conviction of an internist who also had an important influence on various authorities, leading to a forceful campaign to the public about the dangers of using producer gas. After some years, the frequency and even the existence of a chronic carbon monoxide intoxication was called in question and at the end of the war that diagnosis lost its actuality. In Sweden, oral galvanism attributed to dental amalgam was discussed in mass media in the 1970s, not least by evidence given by some well-known personalities. In the 1980s, the frequency of illness attributed to dental amalgam increased to an important epidemic. The question of the dangers of mercury released from amalgam fillings is still an important issue of debate among dentists and physicians, although the majority remains sceptical. Also medical authorities have found little evidence of the importance of dental amalgam toxicity. A patients organisation, Tandvårdsskadeförbundet, seems to have played a significant part in the acceptance of the syndrome among laymen. Thus, various psychosocial factors seem to have played a role in both syndromes which could thus be conceived as environmental somatization syndromes.

Water monitoring system for oil contamination using polymer-coated quartz crystal microbalance chemical sensor.

A water monitoring system with a new chemical sensor for oil contamination was developed. The sensor had an organic polymer film on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The organic film was a hydrocarbon polymer and had high affinities for the organic compounds of petroleum products such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil and fuel oil. The monitoring system as composed of a sampling part, a purging part, a humidity control part and a sensor part. The oil in contaminated river water could be detected whose threshold odour number (TON) was less than three. The detecting time was less than 5 min depending on the oil kindness. This system was tested using artificially contaminated river water with the oils, to be found that the sensitivity was kept steady for longer than 6 months with 400 detections of diesel oil and heavy oil. Moreover, the oil kind could be discriminated with only one sensor device by analyzing the desorption response curves obtained by flowing a clean air on the sensor instead of the purging air.

Oiling the friction: environmental conflict management in the Niger Delta, Nigeria.

The Niger Delta, a sensitive ecosystem rich in biodiversity, has witnessed considerable violence as a result of the tense relationship among oil companies, the Nigerian state, and oil-bearing communities. Environmental damage from the extraction and movement of fossil fuels is a central point of dispute among the parties while the precise extent of ecological damage remains unknown. Drawing on numerous interviews while living and working in the Niger Delta, Doctor Okechukwu Ibeanu analyzes the management of conflicts surrounding petroleum production in the region, including the role of state violence and contradictory perceptions of security held by Delta communities and the oil companies and their partners in the Nigerian federal government.

Characterization and aging study of currency ink and currency canine training aids using headspace SPME/GC-MS.

Solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS) was used to characterize the volatile components associated with U.S. currency, U.S. currency inks, and Canadian currency. Compounds that can be attributed to the ink-curing process include series of straight-chain aldehydes, alkenals, acids, alcohols, and ketones and a series of lactones and 2-alkyl furans. Solvent compounds include naphthenic and paraffinic hydrocarbons with a profile typical of petroleum products, alkyl cyclohexanes, various ethylene glycol alkyl ethers, and traces of chlorinated solvents. Trace levels of 2-phenoxyethanol, a solvent often used in ink formulations, were also detected. Environmental contaminants, those compounds found in circulating currency but not in currency ink, include 2,2'-diethyl-1,1'-biphenyl, methyl benzoate and salicylate, menthol, limonene, dimethyl and diethyl phthalate, and ionol. Not including simple hydrocarbons, over 100 compounds were identified in the headspace of currency-related samples.

Aplastic anaemia: a review of cases at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria.

Thirty male and 27 female patients were treated at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, over a 20 year period (January, 1971 to December, 1990) for aplastic anaemia. Age range was three months to 52 years with a median of 19 years. In 26 patients the aplasia could not be linked with a particular cause. Most patients in this category were students in secondary and tertiary institutions, office workers and casual labourers. Nineteen patients were automobile and factory workers who are exposed to lead while two were dealers in petroleum products. In two patients aplasia was linked to chloramphenicol ingestion while in three, the aplasia linked to the use of hair dye. Another three linked the aplasia to a past history of viral hepatitis. One patient had congenital aplasia of the marrow and one was a radiographer. Treatment included oxymethalone 100 mg given three times daily (tds) or intramuscular (i.m.) Durabolin 500 mg weekly. When these drugs were unavailable prednisolone 60 mg daily was administered. No patient had the benefit of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) or the superior drugs, e.g. anti-thymocyte globulin and cyclosporin A. This might have contributed to the poor prognosis as revealed by the survival pattern in which 24 patients died within six months of diagnosis while 19 survived 12 months. Seven patients died within 18 months and four others died within three years. Three patients were alive five years after presentation. Death generally resulted from complications of the aplastic anaemia with gastro-intestinal bleeding, cerebro-vascular accidents and overwhelming infections.

Risk factors for oral and pharyngeal cancer in Shanghai, with emphasis on diet.

A population-based case-control study of oral and pharyngeal cancer was conducted in Shanghai, China, from 1988 to 1990, in which 204 (115 male, 89 female) incident cases and 414 (269 male, 145 female) controls were interviewed. Cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as occupational exposures to asbestos and to petroleum products and the use of kerosene stoves in cooking, were associated with increased risk of oral and pharyngeal cancer. In addition, more cases than controls reported having chronic oral diseases and false teeth. Dietary intakes of 42 major foods and selected salt-preserved or deep-fried foods during the past 10 years, ignoring any recent changes, were measured by a structured quantitative food questionnaire. After adjusting for known etiological factors, risks decreased with increasing intake of fruits, particularly oranges and tangerines, and some vegetables, including dark yellow vegetables and Chinese white radish. Men in the highest tertile of intake of these fruits and vegetables had about 30-50% the risk of those in the lowest tertile, with a less pronounced effect among women. A new finding was an excess risk associated with high consumption of salt-preserved meat and fish. The findings from this study provide further evidence that dietary factors play an important role in the development of oral and pharyngeal cancer.

[Identification of the key genes of naphthalene catabolism in soil DNA].

The key genes nahAc and xylE of the naphthalene catabolism of fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. in the total soil DNA samples were detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The collection of fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. was screened for the occurrence of these genes. The results obtained show the possibility of using this approach in the goal-directed search for plasmid-containing naphthalene-degrading fluorescent pseudomonads in soil. The distribution of the naphthalene catabolism genes in soils contaminated with creosote and petroleum products was also studied.

Causal models of leukaemia and lymphoma.

In this chapter, we apply the molecular epidemiological paradigm of biomarkers of exposure, early effect and susceptibility to causal models of leukaemia and lymphoma. The aim is to enhance the development of biomarkers for use in studying the causes of these haematopoeitic cancers in the general population. Two causal models of acute myeloid leukaemia are discussed in detail: chemotherapy-induced and benzene-induced acute myeloid leukaemia. Specific chromosomal changes found in acute myeloid leukaemia may serve as useful biomarkers of early effect in these models, and genetic variants in glutathione S-transferases, NQO1 and DNA-repair enzymes may serve as useful biomarkers of susceptibility. Several causal models of lymphoma exist in which biomarkers could be developed and validated. These include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) immunosuppression, families with inherited disorders and workers exposed to petroleum products, pesticides or organochlorines. Biomarkers of early effect could include markers of DNA double-strand breaks and aberrant V(D)J recombination, and susceptibility may be related to polymorphisms in genes controlling DNA repair and immunological status. We predict that biomarkers of susceptibility will continue to be studied in the case-control format, perhaps in large pooled studies, but that for biomarkers of early effect, there will be a move away from the study of diseased populations to the study of individuals 'at risk' in the causal models described above.

The role of microorganisms in dispersion of thallium compounds in the environment.

Thallium is a highly toxic element and very rarely studied in the context of environmental hazards connected with zinc and non-ferrous metal industry. Microorganisms naturally existing in post-flotation and smelt wastes can participate in thallium release from waste deposits and can contribute to its dispersion in the environment. Twenty-one isolates were obtained from wastes of a non-ferrous smelter in Southern Poland characterised by high heavy metal contamination. Ten isolates showed high activity in thallium leaching from wastes (post-flotation and smelt wastes) as well as from pure thallous sulphide. Additionally, cadmium and lead were bioleached from wastes. The isolated bacteria indicated thallium resistance at a concentration up to 100 mg/l and some of them were able to survive in good condition at a concentration of up to 4 g/l. The same bacteria were isolated from rivers and wastewater in this region. A preliminary characterisation of isolates was performed. It was shown that some petroleum products i.e. asphalt-base crude occasionally used for waste immobilisation at the edge of pond or flotation surfactants partially stopped the activity of sulphide oxidising bacteria.

[Microbiological degradation of benz(a)pyrene in soil].

Several microbial clones that could grow on the benz(a)pyrene medium were identified from the soils contaminated with petroleum products. It was shown that benz(a)pyrene could be degraded by the obtained cultures that selectively utilized the carcinogenic molecules of benz(a)pyrene in the presence of other sources of carbohydrate. The authors give recommendations on the biodestruction of benz(a)pyrene and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under natural conditions in order to improve the oncoecological situation.
