About 21-year hale cyclic signature in agriculture complement those in biomedicine.

Data on total cultivated area and total production of wheat and rye, barley and two-row barley, corn, soya and sunflower in Romania (1968-2000) are re-analyzed from the viewpoint of chronomics. An about 10.7-year component is detected with borderline statistical significance. A 3-component model consisting of cosine curves, with periods of 3.62, 2.48 and 2.15 years, accounts for 27% of the overall variability. Transdisciplinary chronomics is advocated to systematically map predictable dynamics in agriculture such as Hale-like cycles in corn and soja and their interactions with chronomes of external environmental factors.

View of life sciences in the 21st century.

As we contemplate the nature of life sciences in the 21st century, we should briefly consider the changes that have occurred in the past century. Surely, the sources of progress of this science in the next century are the advances emerging now. Furthermore, the likely pace of discovery and change in life sciences in the next century can best be estimated by a reflection on its history.

Singapore focuses its life science strategy on humans.

The tiny island has invested heavily in life sciences as a linchpin of its future economy. But initial enthusiasm for a broad-based approach has switched to a focus on human healthcare, reports Kenneth Lee.

Search for an optimum approach to the evaluation of data of varying consistency: half-live evaluations for 3H, 35S, 55Fe, 99Mo and 111In.

A common procedure is proposed for the evaluation of both consistent and discrepant data in which adjustments are made to the uncertainties in the measured data that are dependent on the chi2 values of the data set. A computer program EVINEW has been developed and applied to the evaluation of 3H, 3S, 55Fe, 99Mo and 111In half-lives to give the following values: 12.32(2) yr, 87.32(16) d, 2.732(14) yr, 2.7480(9) d and 2.8047(4) d, respectively.

Application of alpha/beta discrimination in liquid scintillation counting for the purity control of 99mTc medical solutions.

99mTc is a widely used nuclide in nuclear medicine for diagnosis. 99mTc solutions are eluted from 99Mo/99mTc generators as sodium chloride solutions. As the 99Mo source is a fission product extracted from the reprocessing of nuclear fuel, one might expect the presence of radioactive impurities. One point of special concern described in the 1997 European Pharmacopoeia (1996) is the possible contamination in alpha-impurities (U, Pu, Am, Cm, ...) which must be very low. In order to check this impurity concentration, we used liquid scintillation counting (LSC) with alpha/beta discrimination and a commercial extractive scintillator, Alphaex. We first made measurements using synthetic mixtures of alpha and beta-emitters and then using the real effluent. This paper describes the measurement procedure used with the optimum chemical conditions for a correct extraction of the alpha-emitting nuclides. The sensitivity of the method is also described from the measurements made using the real effluent with an addition of a quantitative amount of alpha particle contamination.

Future of plant science in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe's agricultural biotechnology research capacity is located at universities, government research institutions and parastatal (state funded) organizations. Projects range from those using traditional biotechnology to a few that are experimenting with genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Multiphoton microscopy in biological research.

From its conception a decade ago, multiphoton microscopy has evolved from a photonic novelty to an indispensable tool for gleaning information from subcellular events within organized tissue environments. Its relatively deep optical penetration has recently been exploited for subcellularly resolved investigations of disease models in living transgenic mice. Its enhanced spectral accessibility enables aberration-free imaging of fluorescent molecules absorbing in deep-UV energy regimes with simultaneous imaging of species having extremely diverse emission spectra. Although excited fluorescence is the primary signal for multiphoton microscopy, harmonic generation by multiphoton scattering processes are also valuable for imaging species with large anharmonic modes, such as collagen structures and membrane potential sensing dyes.

Available pathways database (APD): an essential resource for combinatorial biology.

A relational database, the Available Pathways Database (APD), has been constructed of microbial natural products, their producing strains, and their biosynthetic pathways. The database allows the ready selection of donor strains for combinatorial biology experiments. It provides the same type of resource for combinatorial biology as the Available Chemicals Directory (ACD) does for combinatorial chemical library generation. Its cataloging ability can also provide insight into novel aspects of biosynthetic routes. In particular, no 10-unit Type I polyketides were found in the compilation of this edition of the APD (Version I).

Facile cleavage of triethylsilyl (TES) ethers using o-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) without affecting tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBS) ethers.

[reaction: see text] In DMSO cleavage of triethylsilyl (TES) ethers by o-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) was significantly faster than cleavage of tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBS) ethers or further oxidation into carbonyl compounds. In most cases, TES protecting groups could be removed in good to excellent yields within 1 h, whereas similar TBS protecting groups remained intact under the same conditions. The procedure also could be adapted for direct one-pot conversion of TES ethers into carbonyl compounds.
