The main purpose of lining cavities before insertion of composite resin restorations is to prevent bacterial contamination at the cavity walls. A thin film of polystyrene liner dissolved in ethyl acetate applied to all surfaces by compressed air provided good protection against bacteria on cavity walls under composite resin restorations. An antibacterial primer in an alcohol solution applied prior to the liner may improve this protection. This procedure had no detectable injurious effect on the pulp.

AIM: To examine pH changes in the cervical external root surface, when calcium hydroxide was used as a supplementary barrier to the protective base material during intracoronal bleaching. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-eight single-rooted human premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons were instrumented with K-Flex files, obturated with gutta-percha and subjected to thermocatalytic bleaching. The teeth were divided into four groups. In group A, a glass-ionomer cement barrier was placed at the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) level and in group C, the barrier was placed 1 mm apical to the CEJ. In groups B and D, Ca(OH)2 was placed in contact and apical to the glass-ionomer cement at the CEJ and 1 mm apical to the CEJ, respectively. The teeth were placed in vials containing distilled water and the pH values of the medium surrounding the teeth were recorded after 1, 2, 4, 10 and 15 days, following renewal of the medium. RESULTS: The pH in the medium became acidic in all groups. No statistically significant differences existed between groups for all the experimental days (P = 0.790). CONCLUSION: The placement of Ca(OH)2 as a supplementary barrier during intracoronal bleaching did not have a significant effect in reversing the acidic pH created at the external root surface in vitro. Its potential effect during these procedures in vivo needs to be further investigated.

Pulpal response to composite resin restorations placed in experimentally prepared cavities treated with various cavity cleansing and etching agents were studied in monkey teeth. The use of etching agents and cleansers with a demineralizing potential enhanced the pulpal response to composite resin restorations. Bacterial proliferation on the cavity walls around the composite restorations may be one of several factors causing the harmful pulpal responses found. The protective effect of a calcium hydroxide-containing cavity lining material was confirmed.
The combination of various possibilities for sample preparation and investigation--the tinting penetration method, the ion beam slope cutting, the light and scanning electron microscopy--allow statements at the grind after different drying of the preparation mainly to the bond but also surface and filler shape of glass-ionomer cements. The dentine in the area of enamel-dentine-junction and of superficial root area is effectively closed by Ketac-Bond. Likewise, the bond with cover filling (Visio-Molar) can be considered without gaps except a single case. Crack propagations from the cement surface seem to related to pores and occur independently of type of drying especially in case of mechanical after treatment of already hardened cavity lining [correction of underfilling] material.

The pulpal response to a new adhesive restorative resin was histopathologically investigated using dogs, and was compared with a representative conventional resin. When filled without etching and cavity wall lining, bacterial penetration and pulpal response were less with the new resin. Lining of dentin walls and total etching of cavity walls, including dentin, caused less pulpal response under the new resin. Cavities which were totally etched and filled with the new resin showed only a slight pulpal response and no bacterial penetration.
