Archaeological evidence for dental innovation: an eighteenth century porcelain dental prosthesis belonging to Archbishop Arthur Richard Dillon.

During archaeological investigation by Gifford of St Pancras Old Church burial ground, on the eastern edge of Somers Town, London, in advance of construction of the new London terminus for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, a full porcelain denture was discovered. The high quality porcelain dentures, manufactured in the late eighteenth century French style, may have been brought with their owner, Archbishop Arthur Richard Dillon, on his journey into exile. There is evidence of prolonged use, not only for cosmetic or vocal functions but also in mastication. The dentures are unique archaeological artefacts and represent a pivotal time in dental history, with the adoption of new materials and methods of manufacture. They reflect a period of significant social and economic change for the upper echelons of French society. This paper outlines the development of porcelain dentures, discusses the prosthesis, their owner, and a possible provenance.

[Dental prosthesis using immediate implants].

The authors emphasize the role of implantation in recovery of the maxillodental morphology and function and in the prevention of denture involvement in cases with removal of a tooth. Specific features of prostheses after direct implantation (implantation into removed tooth or root well) are described. Advantages of immediate implantation over delayed are enumerated.

[Alternative simplifying method for construction of dental prosthesis directly from bite].

Fifty years ago, dentists had always used modelling compound to take functional bite pattern as a method for making the occlusal surface of a crown in order to simplify the final occlusal adjustment. Therefore, the writer adopted the same method to fabricate crown bridge with inlay wax and to construct denture with paraffin wax. The results achieved the same simplification during occlusal adjustment procedure.

[Modern principles of incorporation of total dental prosthesis (author's transl)].

A promising therapy with total prostheses is only possible if it is possible to incorporate the prostheses into the functional processes of the oral cavity without disturbance and to coordinate it with the functions of the mandibular joint and the musculature. Overemphasis of a measure does not ensure success, only the cooperation of physical biomechanical, functional and psychic factors.

[Dental prosthesis using implants made of corundum ceramics].

A complex of implanted dentures was manufactured with a corundum ceramic compound "Kador" made in the USSR. The technique of implantation is described. The authors used a double-staged technique of implantation immediately after the frontal teeth loss or in the late periods in unilateral or bilateral unrestricted end defects of dentition. Within the 1.5-year follow-up 35 of the 36 implants were functionally reliable.

[Changes in the local immunity indices of the oral cavity in periodontitis patients in relation to the type of metal alloys used for fixed dental prosthesis].

The effects of various metal alloys on the oral fluid levels of IgA, serum IgA and IgG, and IgE of 115 subjects aged 20 to 60 were under study. Mixed salivary IgG levels were measured before and in various periods after fixation of dentures made of different alloys. IgA levels failed to normalize even in a year after fixation of dentures made of steel and titanium nitrite-coated steel, though IgG levels were unchanged in the same patients.
