[Experimental validation of the use of an ultrasonic surgical instrument in neurophysiology].

The effect of ultrasonic and surgical instruments on nervous tissue in chronic experiments on the cats were investigated with electrophysiological and morphological methods. The authors compared the results of removal of the neocortex zones using ultrasonic and surgical instruments or routine methods. Electrophysiological and morphological studies have shown small injury effects made by ultrasonic and surgical instruments on the surrounding brain tissue.

[Experimental validation of a procedure for modulated perfusion of thiopental].

The pharmacokinetics of sodium thiopental was studied in 9 normal dogs of various ages by the usual bolus method. Data were fittable by a two compartment open model in 8, three compartments were needed in one. Constant-rate infusions, as used in cerebral resuscitation, were performed in 6 of them. As expected, constant blood levels could not be obtained during the distribution phase which lasted about 6 hours. From the individual pharmacokinetic constants, the time equation of infusion rate intended to exactly compensate for distribution was calculated. The resulting "modulated infusions" succeeded in reducing the blood level trough from 50% to 20%. After the end of infusions, the decrease of plasma levels exhibited a non linear pattern which had not been noticeable in the elimination phase after boluses. Such unknown non linearity may lead to systematic errors when calculating pharmacokinetic parameters: this could explain why a complete correction was not obtained with modulated infusions. A better parametrization method in the case of non-linear elimination is under study.

Experimental validation of self-instructional modules on the topic of donor phlebotomy.

This validation study investigated the effectiveness of an instructional unit on the topic of donor phlebotomy. The unit consisting of 3 modules based on a videotape and 3 booklets covered (1) donor selection, (2) donor arm preparation, (3) donor phlebotomy. A separate-sample pretest-post-test design was used. All 3 modules were found to be instructionally effective as measured by objective referenced tests. Student appraisal data also was collected for the purpose of revising and improving these materials.

[An experimental validation of hyaluronidase electrophoresis for the prevention of postoperative adhesions].

The experiments on 50 animals were made to evaluate efficacy of electrophoresis of hyaluronidase (from actinohyal solution) against adhesions. Model abdominal adhesions in rats were exposed to hyaluronidase coming from anode and cathode for 20 min. There were altogether 10 daily procedures. The control animals received the solvent from the same poles or were not exposed to electrophoresis. The results demonstrate that hyaluronidase introduction from anode and cathode significantly decreases the occurrence and density of postoperative adhesions compared to controls.

[An experimental validation of the clinical use of a nitroglycerin ointment of an original composition].

Application employment of the proposed nitroglycerin ointment, original in its composition, permits the attacks of angina pectoris to be controlled, their onset to be prevented and adverse events associated with the use of nitrates to be eliminated. Therapeutic benefit becomes clinically apparent with small doses of nitroglycerin, the ointment itself is good for repeated therapeutic and prophylactic application.

New heterocyclic derivatives of benzimidazole with germicidal activity--XI--Experimental validation of OSAR prediction on antibacterial and antimycotic activity of benzimidazole derivatives.

In continuation of previous studies, Authors describe the synthesis of three new derivatives of 2-(5'-nitro-2'-furyl) benzimidazole, having hydroxy, methoxy or amino group at position 5. The new compounds, synthesized as suggested by a previous chemometric study, were tested in vitro against 5 Gram + and 4 Gram- strains and the mycete C. albicans. Two derivatives (R = OH, NH2) showed a good degree of antibacterial activity, especially the 5-hydroxy derivative, but they were practically inactive against the mycete; these results are in agreement with the prediction of chemometric study.
