[Congenital hepatoblastoma with a rhabdomyoblastic component].

An observation of congenital hepatoblastoma of a mixed type in a baby dying on the 50th day of life is described. The boy was born with a metastasis of the tumour into the left superciliary area. The process of hepatoblastoma metastasising had begun in the intrauterine period. The main and metastatic nodes of the tumour consisted of epithelial and mesenchymal components. The multicomponent structure of the tumour attests to its origin from a pluripotent blastoma like Wilms tumour. In addition to the hepatoblastoma with disseminated metastases the boy had malformations in the liver and kidneys. The combination of hepatoblastoma with congenital malformations appears to be due to the effect on the fetus of some harmful factors in the first trimester of pregnancy (toxicosis, influenza).

[Adaptation of newborn infants with very low birth weight].

The clinical and metabolic adaptation to extrauterine life in preterm was comprehensively evaluated in newborns with 28-34 weeks of gestation. A high incidence of aggravating factors that underlie the development of chronic fetal hypoxia has been revealed. The early neonatal events comprised impairment of cerebral flow, jaundice, oedema, respiratory disorders, infectious toxicosis, the manifestation rate being inversely proportional to the gestational age. A significant immunological impairment was noted along with the serum electrolyte imbalance and changes in bilirubin metabolism. Development and introduction of highly information assessment methods for intrauterine fetal development into practice is essential for the management of very low-birthweight infants. Dynamic follow-up of women at risk of unfavourable pregnancy outcome together with monitoring of the intrauterine fetal development, neonatal adaptation to the extrauterine life, and infants' further development would raise significantly the efficacy of the medical care of mothers and their preterm babies.

[The functional status of the thyroid gland and adrenal cortex in newborn babies and infants with acute ethmoiditis].

Using the RIA method, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyroxine (T3), and cortisol (C) were measured in 10 patients with acute ethmoiditis, aged from 13 days to 6 months. At the peak of the disease, i. e. when infection toxicosis was very manifest, T3 was significantly lower and T4 tended to decrease. During the convalescence period T3 increased distinctly and T4 continued to decline. It can be concluded that the thyroid function was inhibited during the toxic period; however, this inhibition was transient and required no intervention. Nevertheless, in the case of complications, especially sepsis, transient hypothyrosis may develop which requires substitution therapy. Variations in cortisol serum concentrations were insignificant.

[The role of Chlamydia infection in the development of infectious inflammatory diseases in premature newborn infants].

It is highly probable that neonates may be infected with chlamydiae provided their mothers are chlamydia carriers, especially in disease exacerbation before delivery. Parallelism was noted between the intensity of antigen demonstration in the mother and the child. Infection with chlamydiae potentiates secondary infectious inflammatory diseases in premature neonates. However, diseases of chlamydia etiology developed only in 20.5% of children of all the infected and manifested themselves by pneumonias or total toxicosis without any localized focus of infection.

[Status of reproductive function and the development and health of children of female workers in the synthetic leather industry].

The study was undertaken to analyze the course of pregnancy and childbirth along with the state of the lactation function in 48 female workers occupationally exposed to dimethylformamide (DMFA) during 1-5 years of service. Physical development and health status of 48 children born to DMFA-exposed mothers were examined. It was demonstrated that DMFA had adverse effect on pregnancy and childbirth, characterized by a reliable increase of toxicosis rates, birth complications, manual elimination of afterbirth. DMFA-exposed females experienced weakening of the lactation function and some deviations in the development and health status of infants.
