As required by law, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is hereby giving notice of cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) in certain benefit rates and income limitations. These COLAs affect the pension, parents' dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC), and spina bifida programs. These adjustments are based on the rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) during the one year period ending September 30, 1998. VA is also giving notice of the maximum amount of reimbursement that may be paid for headstones or markers purchased in lieu of Government-furnished headstone or markers in Fiscal Year 1999, which began on October 1, 1998.

An individual may present with a multitude of symptoms following an acute loss. Helping the patient go through the essential "grief work" may prevent prolonged and serious alterations in social adjustment as well as potential medical disease.
The authors studied the dental calculus of 20 mummies with ligth microscopy, polarized ligth microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Gram positive bacteria could be detected in all preparates, while Gram negative bacteria in 12 and fungi only in 3 dental calculus was visible. Animal food remains within five, and plant remains in all dental calculus were identified. Anorgic element and cell debris were seen in all preparates.
The "Spanish Flu" killed over 40 million people worldwide in 1918. Archival records helped us identify seven men who died of influenza in 1918 and were interred in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway, 1,300 km from the North Pole. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was used successfully, in a high-resolution field survey mode, to locate a large excavation with seven coffins, near the existing seven grave markers. The GPR indicated that the ground was disturbed to 2 m depth and was frozen below 1 m. Subsequent excavation showed that: a) the GPR located the position of the graves accurately, b) the coffins were buried less than 1 m deep, and c) that the frozen ground was 1.2 m deep where the coffins were located. The GPR assisted in planning the exhumation, safely and economically, under the high degree of containment required. Virologic and bacteriologic investigations on recovered tissues may give us an opportunity to isolate and identify the micro-organisms involved in the 1918 influenza and expand our knowledge on the pathogenesis of influenza.
The Royal British Legion organizes pilgrimages to nearly all parts of the world where British servicemen and service-women and their allies fought and died. The Pilgrimage Department has taken thousands of widows, other relatives, veterans and friends to visit the grave of a loved one or comrade buried overseas. The parties of pilgrims are escorted by Service medical officers and nurses of the Regular and Reserve Armed Forces. The role of the medical escort is described.
Several DNA-typing approaches are applied for identification and kinship analysis. Autosomal Short Tandem Repeat (STR) typing produces the genetic fingerprint that is unique to an individual. Y-chromosomal STR typing identifies individuals of the same paternal lineage, and sequence analysis of the hypervariable region of the mitochondrion can identify maternally related individuals. The combined approach of these DNA-typing methods allows the determination of kinship even in complex collective burial situations. In a bronze age collective site, the typing methods were tested for applicability to ancient DNA. For each approach, results were obtained, leading to the conclusion that the determination of kinship is achievable.

2016 coroner's crematorial inquests of the Bonn Institute of Legal Medicine over a 3 years' period were evaluated and the statements in the death certificates were compared to those ones of the Statistical Country Office of Northrhine-Westphalia. No significant differences were found with respect to age, gender and reason of death. However, the number of insufficiently classified deaths with respect to the reason of death were overrepresented especially in cases of older women, while the number of unnatural deaths was generally underrepresented. According to legal medical criteria 2 1/4 per cent of the deaths were falsely classified as natural. Only in 2 cases an autopsy was accomplished. Other author's statements on the validity of death certificates were confirmed.
