[Semeiotics of abdominal tuberculosis].

Examination of 119 patients with abdominal tuberculosis permitted the description of the characteristic semiotics of the illness. Today the patients with abdominal tuberculosis are mainly women of child-bearing age with a long-term tuberculosis catamnesis and intoxication, with a history of tuberculosis of different sites, those suffering from tuberculosis or its sequels at present (64%), those with pains (94%), discomfort or swelling of the abdomen (79%), malfunction of the gastrointestinal tract (65%), weight loss (86%), malnutrition (72%), anemia (63%), not infrequently with inflammatory induration (43%) or ascites in the abdominal cavity (39%). In addition to this characteristic semiotics, the patients with abdominal tuberculosis may demonstrate the most different and unexpected symptoms up to acute abdomen (23%). To make differential diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis, one has often to resort to diagnostic laparotomy, laparoscopy, Koch's test and to trial therapy.

Apparent resurgence of tuberculosis in urban children.

An apparent increase in incidence of pulmonary and extrapulmonary forms of tuberculosis was observed in children in an inner-city community in New York City. This occurred during years in which the case rates of tuberculosis declined in the city and the nation. Two unusual presentations of childhood tuberculosis are described. This experience suggests that physicians should be more aware of the diagnosis of tuberculosis in children and that routine tuberculin skin testing with 5 TU of purified protein derivative (PPD) should be continued, with emphasis on testing in high-risk areas. Adequate funding of detection and treatment programs may prevent reemergence of this disease.

[The tubercular process and antitubercular immunity in mice of different ages].

Experiments on "young" and "old" mice (aged, respectively, 2-4 and 22-24 months) infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, strain Bovinus-8, have revealed that in old mice the tuberculous process progresses at a faster rate than in "young" mice, which is manifested in "old" mice by their earlier death, more pronounced lesion of their internal organs and by a greater number of Mycobacterium colonies harvested after the inoculation of samples taken from their organs (after equal periods of incubation). In the process of the development of tuberculosis most immunity parameters are progressively suppressed, this suppression being more pronounced in the old animals and leading to a decrease in antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity, the number of natural killer cells, the reaction of lymphocyte blast-transformation on PPD, cytotoxic effect on PPD-coated red blood cells, the synthesis of interleukin-1 and interleukin-2 after incubation with PPD, the titer of antituberculosis antibodies.

[Bone marrow's histopathology in tuberculosis of the hematopoietic organs (author's transl)].

Through the reports of the literature, the histopathologic lesions of the bone marrow in tuberculosis of the hematopoietic organs are analysed. Whether the lesions are typical or not, it is necessary to have a bacteriologic proof of tuberculosis. Near these lesions, bone marrow's cellularity is often greater or lower, reticular fibers are often increased and sometimes reticulin fibrosis is marked. Other necrosis and granulomatous inflammation are discussed. Contribution of macrophage is described. The relationships between tuberculosis and hematologic diseases are reported.

[Two cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis causing differential diagnostic problems].

The decrease of tuberculotic diseases was continuous in the past years. This statement relates to pulmonalis as well as to extrapulmonalis tbc. The authors want to call attention to the possibility of the varied and more rarely appearing extrapulmonalis manifestation. In the first of their cases the burst of spondylitis tbc, and in the other one the very rare spleen tbc--which was made probably clinicum and later by the US abdomen examination--caused differential diagnostic problem.
