Preclinical detection in studies of the etiology, natural history, and treatment of Parkinson's disease.

The development of reliable preclinical detection procedures for idiopathic Parkinson's disease may be the fundamental advance required for the establishment of the cause, the natural history, and ultimately, the prevention of this neurodegenerative disorder. The usefulness of these preclinical markers in efforts to better understand the etiology and development of this disorder will relate to whether they are direct measures of dopamine production or indirect measures such as metabolic changes or comorbidity, whether they can be used in the first or later decades of life, whether they are invasive, and whether they are expensive and sophisticated or simple and cheap. An overview of the criteria for evaluation of the utility of specific markers, as well as an assessment of the importance of early markers in future research, is presented.

Dutasteride: a novel dual inhibitor of 5alpha-reductase for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Dutasteride is a new dual 5alpha-reductase inhibitor for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It differs from finasteride as it inhibits both isoenzymes of 5alpha-reductase and results in near-complete suppression of serum dihydro-testosterone. Similar to finasteride, it reduces serum prostatic specific antigen by approximately 50% at 6months and total prostate volume by 25% in 2years. Randomised, placebo-controlled trials conducted over 2years have shown the efficacy of dutasteride in symptomatic relief, improvements in quality of life and peak urinary flow rate, and reduction of acute urinary retention events and the need for surgery. The main side effects are erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, gynaecomastia and ejaculation disorders. However, long-term usage for > 4years did not reveal increased new onset of sexual side effects. In addition, the combination of dutasteride and tamsulosin is well-tolerated and has the added advantage of rapid symptomatic relief. Finally, dutasteride has been shown to possess tumour regression properties invitro and its role in chemoprevention of prostate cancer will be confirmed in the ongoing Reduction by Dutasteride of Prostate Cancer Events (REDUCE) trial.

Ethics in matter of edition.

In this review are presented the different aspects and problems to which the edition of a journal like "Cellular and Molecular Biology" is submitted as well as all the incidences happening in the organization and editorial matter. There are presented the most frequent dysfunctions hampering the editorial and organisatorial activities, striking frontally all Ethical Rules and some of them constituting true criminal mafia activities from the side as well of authors and scientists as of a rival publishing company like Elsevier and of well established scientific organizations, like the IFCB and the CSBMCB, demonstrating as so far how lobbies exert inadmissible dictatorial pressures on the activity as well of individuals as of a journal like CMB and on a congress organization like our group, the Founders of the World Congresses of Cellular and Molecular Biology. Many examples are mentioned, most of them without indication of names and places for evident Ethical reasons but other ones with full names and places, particularly to obtain their condemnation by the Justice of particular countries and essentially by the High Court of the Human Rights for having used and for continuing to use mafiosi methods.

Design and reporting modifications in industry-sponsored comparative psychopharmacology trials.

This review of recently published pharmaceutical industry-sponsored comparative psychotropic drug trials aims to classify apparent design and reporting modifications that favor the sponsor's product. The modifications have been grouped into 13 discrete categories, and representative examples of each are presented. Strong circumstantial evidence suggests that marketing goals led to these adjustments. The consequences of marketing influences on comparative psychopharmacology trials are discussed in terms of conflicts of interest, the integrity of the scientific literature, and costs to consumers, as well as their impact on physician practice.

[Publication ethics, national and international regulations].

The publication ethics cover all stages of the scientific manuscript processing. In this respect a couple of ethical assumptions must be taken into account: the research ethics (i.e. respect and safety for participating patients and healthy volunteers), and the researcher's ethics (i.e. the credibility of the researcher). International declarations, conventions, directives, and various national laws and rules regulate research ethics and researcher's ethics. These topics are to some extent included in the Vancouver regulations, which also include qualifications for fulfilling authorship.

Ethical issues faced by nursing editors.

This study reports on ethical issues faced by editors of nursing journals, a topic which has not appeared in the nursing literature. A survey of nursing editors (n = 88)was conducted via e-mail; this article is the content analysis of survey questions about ethics. Eight categories of ethical issues emerged: problems with society/association/publisher; decisions about inflammatory submissions; informed consent or IRB issues; conflicts of interest; advertising pressures; duplicate publications and/or plagiarism; difficult interactions with authors; and authorship. Some issues were similar to those published about medical editors; however, others were unique. This study can assist authors to better understand some of the ethical issues in publishing, can help editors to view their issues in the context of what others experience, and can assist societies and publishers to work toward avoiding these ethical issues in the future. Professional discussions about ethics in nursing publications should be the subject of ongoing research and scientific inquiry.
