[Electronic data processing in public health offices in Schleswig-Holstein--current status and future developments].

There are several fields of activities in Public Health administration that can be rationalised or managed by electronic data processing. This includes typical data bases of Public Health services, text processing, communication, information base searches, statistical and epidemiological evaluations. In some administrations of Slesvig-Holstein, personal computers have been successfully installed for a limited range of functions. The possibility of linking up personal computers in local area networks or multiuser systems is discussed.

[Studies for a mathematical model of the proliferation kinetics of mammary carcinomas by means of electronic data processing (author's transl)].

Continuing an earlier publication in which the growth of spontaneous mammary carcinomas in female mice of a C3H inbred strain was described, in the present paper the growth rate is expressed by a mathematical function, and is adapted by electronic data processing to the experimental values of 60 tumors classified into seven "growth types". For mathematical description the tumors were conveniently assumed to have a spherical shape, and the main reason for the reduction in volume increase with increasing tumor size was thought to be insufficient supply with oxygen and the essential nutrients S. Including the experimental data of all carcinomas investigated, the minimum concentration of S necessary for mitotic activity of the tumor cells was calculated to be 65% of the normal level. As the average for all the tumors investigated, a time of at least 33 hrs is required for the tumor volume to double.

[Electronic data processing at the clinic].

Since 1 October 1986, all cataract, keratoplasty and glaucoma operations have been evaluated prospectively in the Department of Ophthalmology and Eye Hospital at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. The medical history data and preoperative status, intraoperative details and the postoperative course are standardized and stored. For each eye, the diagnosis is made according to the system called the "Erlanger Schlüssel." The present status of the Erlanger Ophthalmological Documentation System for Cataract, Keratoplasty and Glaucoma surgery is outlined. The difficulties encountered when the project was started are pointed out. The importance of electronic data processing in research, teaching and patient care is discussed.
