Relationship of energy metabolism detected by 31P-MRS in the human brain with mental fatigue.

To search for a possible relationship between brain energy metabolism and mental fatiguability, 10 normal volunteers were examined by 31P-MRS (phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy) in the occipital cortex during photic stimulation (PS), and Uchida-Kraepelin test (UKT), a standardized serial calculation task, was used for measurement of intraindividual characteristics of mental fatigue in these subjects. More decrease of phosphocreatine measured by 31P-MRS during the PS was significantly associated with more effects of rest assessed by UKT (r = -0.86, p <0.005). More decrease in pH after PS was associated with steeper decline of performance (r = 0.78, p <0.01). These findings suggest that characteristics of brain energy metabolism in an individual may relate to intrinsic patterns of mental fatigability.

A very low level of magnetic field exposure does not affect a participant's mental fatigue and stress as much as VDT work.

Exposure to Magnetic Fields (MF) may affect the health of workers in an occupational environment. However, there is no clear evidence that the emission of MF from the visual display terminals (VDT) affects workers'mental status or induces stress in office environments. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether exposure to the MF during VDT work affects mental fatigue or induces stress related to psycho-physiological changes in workers. Thirty-seven students were voluntarily recruited to participate in this study. We created experimental conditions that a pair of the liquid crystal display (LCD) terminals separated by screens was closely placed in front of the visual suface of the cathode ray tube (CRT) units. All participants were not able to recognize whether the power of the CRT Units was ON or OFF while they worked with the LCD terminals. When the CRT unit was ON, participants who worked with the LCD terminal were called CRT-ON group. On the other hand, when the CRT unit was OFF, participants who worked with the CLD terminal were called CRT-OFF group. Incredibly short profiles of mood states (ISP)and subjective symptom questionnaires were used as indices of the mental fatigue as well as psychological stress before and after VDT work. Furthermore, salivary chromogranin A and urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) were collected to measure physiological changes before and after VDT work. The results of the questionnaires and salivary and urinary stress markers showed that the exposure to the MF during VDT work did not significantly induce mental fatigue or psychological stress in comparison with the CRT-OFF group. Contrary to the results from the exposure, mood states of vigor decreased greatly (P < 0.05) whereas the states of fatigue and confusion increased significantly (P < 0.001) after VDT work. In the questionnaires for subjective symptoms, participants complained remarkably regarding 14 out of 25 conditions after VDT work. Moreover, urinary 8-OH-dG excretion increased significantly after VDT work. Taken together, the results of this study did not detect any bad health effects of MF exposure on the VDT participants but suggested that VDT work itself affects their mental fatigue and psycho-physiological status.

The impact of mental fatigue on exploration in a complex computer task: rigidity and loss of systematic strategies.

We investigated the impact of mental fatigue on exploration in a complex computer task. The exploration behavior of participants who underwent a fatigue manipulation (N = 36) was compared with that of a control (nonfatigued) group (N = 32). A distinction was also made between participants with high or low levels of general computer experience. Results showed that fatigued participants used significantly less systematic exploration and made more errors than did nonfatigued participants. Fatigued participants with low computer experience also showed significantly more rigid behavior than did the other participants. No differences were found on the number of subtasks solved. Compared with low-experience participants, highly experienced participants showed significantly more systematic exploration, less unsystematic trial and error, solved more subtasks, and made fewer errors (marginally significant p = .056). Findings were interpreted as the result of reduced task engagement under fatigue and reduced involvement of executive control on behavior. Actual or potential applications of this research include guidelines to prevent detrimental effects of mental fatigue on exploration behavior.

The plasma level of some amino acids and physical and mental fatigue.

Tryptophan is converted to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the brain and evidence is presented that an increase in the concentration of 5-HT can result in physical and mental fatigue during prolonged exercise. The entry of tryptophan in the brain is influenced by the plasma level of free tryptophan (that not bound to albumin) and, from competition for entry into brain, by the plasma level of branched chain amino acids. Hence, oral administration of branched chain amino acids could, theoretically, prevent the increase in 5-HT level during exercise and therefore delay physical and mental fatigue. Evidence in support of this hypothesis is presented.

[Correlation of mental fatigue due to work load and professional qualifications of physicians].

The results presented in the paper refer to the relationship between physicians' professional qualifications and mental fatigue. It was that professional qualifications determining man's capabilities affect the level and structure of mental fatigue caused by work. Furthermore, it was assumed that this workload is multidimensional, and so its following five dimensions were singled out: mental difficulties, monotony, risk and responsibility, moral conflicts and dilemmas. The level of qualifications was measured by the length of employment and specialization and scientific degrees. The studies involved 10% of randomly selected physicians from all over Poland. The obtained results indicate that with increasing length of employment the workload due to moral dilemmas, risk and responsibility and mental difficulties, gets reduced; on the other hand, the load resulting from work monotony is increased. Also the specialization degree affects the workload caused by the risk, responsibility and moral dilemmas. Noticeable here is the trend towards a reduction in the workload with increasing specialization degrees. Instead, the higher the scientific degree the higher the sense of load due to risk and responsibility with simultaneous decrease in the load due to work monotony.

Altered neuronal-glial signaling in glutamatergic transmission as a unifying mechanism in chronic pain and mental fatigue.

Recent experimental results have demonstrated a glial activation during long-term pain that produces and releases cytokines, free oxygen radicals, nitric oxide, and other neuroactive substances in the spinal cord dorsal horns. Such activation might generate a vicious circle by increasing the neuronal excitability level due to a decreased astroglial glutamate uptake and thereby reinforce pain signals that travel up to the thalamus and further up into the parietal cortex for identification and interpretation. In this paper, we adapt new knowledge on neuronal-glial signaling in the CNS to develop tentative explanations at the cellular level for the maintenance of pain signals in the brain, for formation of "pain memory," and even for the increased pain sensitivity that persons with chronic pain often experience in body regions other than those originally affected. We also suggest a hypothetical mechanism at the cellular level underlying the mental fatigue from which persons with chronic pain may suffer. This hypothesis relies on the impaired astroglial glutamate uptake capacity due to the production of neuroactive substances, altered conditions in the chronic pain state, and the anxiety and stress reactions that may occur secondary to the pain. Neuronal activity over time in the dysfunctional state of the astroglial network leads to an increase in extracellular glutamate levels in the vicinity of glutamate synapses. In turn, this increase leads over time to less precision in glutamate transmission. The increased extracellular glutamate levels lead to increased excitability and increased energy requirements. When cellular energy decreases the glutamate transmission decreases, and according to our hypothesis, this is one cause of mental fatigue. New strategies for treatment of chronic pain and the associated mental fatigue are formulated and should be explored.

Mental fatigue disturbs local processing more than global processing.

Focusing of attention is influenced by external features such as the presence of global or local target stimuli, but also by motivation and mood states. In the current study, we examined whether working on cognitively demanding tasks for 2 h, which induces mental fatigue, subsequently had a differential effect on global and local processing. The results showed that, compared to non-fatigued participants, fatigued participants particularly displayed compromised local processing. This indicates that mental fatigue may also manifest itself as effects on attentional focusing. The findings of this study are in line with recent ideas about the nature of fatigue-related cognitive deficits, implying disturbances in the control over attention and behaviour.

Control over the scheduling of simulated office work reduces the impact of workload on mental fatigue and task performance.

Two experiments tested the hypothesis that task-induced mental fatigue is moderated by control over work scheduling. Participants worked for 2 hr on simulated office work, with control manipulated by a yoking procedure. Matched participants were assigned to conditions of either high control (HC) or low control (LC). HC participants decided their own task scheduling, whereas LC participants had to follow these fixed schedules. For Experiment 1, fatigue was higher in LC participants who worked harder, so Experiment 2 compared control effects in high- and low-workload groups. As predicted, the impact of workload was reduced under HC conditions, for subjective fatigue, and most secondary tasks and aftereffects. The findings are interpreted within the framework of compensatory control theory.

Mental fatigue, motivation and action monitoring.

In this study we examined whether the effects of mental fatigue on behaviour are due to reduced action monitoring as indexed by the error related negativity (Ne/ERN), N2 and contingent negative variation (CNV) event-related potential (ERP) components. Therefore, we had subjects perform a task, which required a high degree of action monitoring, continuously for 2h. In addition we tried to relate the observed behavioural and electrophysiological changes to motivational processes and individual differences. Changes in task performance due to fatigue were accompanied by a decrease in Ne/ERN and N2 amplitude, reflecting impaired action monitoring, as well as a decrease in CNV amplitude which reflects reduced response preparation with increasing fatigue. Increasing the motivational level of our subjects resulted in changes in behaviour and brain activity that were different for individual subjects. Subjects that increased their performance accuracy displayed an increase in Ne/ERN amplitude, while subjects that increased their response speed displayed an increase in CNV amplitude. We will discuss the effects prolonged task performance on the behavioural and physiological indices of action monitoring, as well as the relationship between fatigue, motivation and individual differences.

Gender of demented patients and specific family relationship of caregiver to patients influence mental fatigue and burdens on relatives as caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: To survey the burden and psychological problems of family caregivers of demented people. DESIGN: All scores were compared according to gender of the demented patients and which family members were the caregivers. SETTING: Outpatients clinic at the university hospital and the day service system for the elderly. PATIENTS: Sixty-two demented patients living at home and family members acting as caregivers. MEASURES: Cognitive function, activities of daily living (ADL) and behaviour of demented patients were rated using the Hasegawa scale, the ADL scale and the dementia behaviour disturbance (DBD) scale. Caregiver's burden and mental fatigue were rated using a burden scale and a general health questionnaire (GHQ). RESULTS: Caregiver burden correlated negatively with the Hasegawa score and positively with the GHQ and DBD scores. Caregiver burden, GHQ and DBD for male patients were significantly higher than for females. Little difference was evident for caregiver burden scale or patient DBD between spouses and offspring as caregiver, but the GHQ score for spouses was significantly worse than that for offspring. CONCLUSIONS: The difficulty of caregivers in supporting the daily life of demented family members correlated with patients' cognitive impairment, abnormal behaviour and ADL status, and caregivers' difficulty resulted in mental fatigue. Caregivers' relative isolation from friends, attributable to their caregiving responsibility, did not correlate with the demented person's cognitive impairment or ADL status.

Mental fatigue and the control of cognitive processes: effects on perseveration and planning.

We tested whether behavioural manifestations of mental fatigue may be linked to compromised executive control, which refers to the ability to regulate perceptual and motor processes for goal-directed behaviour. In complex tasks, compromised executive control may become manifest as decreased flexibility and sub-optimal planning. In the study we use the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and the Tower of London (TOL), which respectively measure flexibility (e.g., perseverative errors) and planning. A simple memory task was used as a control measure. Fatigue was induced through working for 2 h on cognitively demanding tasks. The results showed that compared to a non-fatigued group, fatigued participants displayed more perseveration on the WCST and showed prolonged planning time on the TOL. Fatigue did not affect performance on the simple memory task. These findings indicate compromised executive control under fatigue, which may explain the typical errors and sub-optimal performance that are often found in fatigued people.

[The systems approach in assessing the efficacy of the pharmacological correction of a state of long-term mental fatigue in military operators].

An intense five-month radiotelegraph training was chosen as a model of prolonged mental fatigue. The state correction was carried out by a fortnight administration of placebo and nootropic piracetam (daily dosage 1.2 g). The efficiency of pharmacological correction was estimated with the help of experimental psychological and psychophysiological methodics. The data processing was made by means of multivariate correlative analysis with automatic selection of essential signs and factor analysis. The data obtained during this study contributed for a more precise formulation of a notion "health status", which must include sociopsychological, intellectual physiological components, as well as self-consciousness.
