Prospects for social workers in health planning.

The nature and extent of social worker's involvement in regional health planning agencies was the subject of the nationwide study reproted here. Social work proved to be more heavily represented on the professional staffs of these agencies than any other discipline. This was just one of the findings that can help shape the profession's response to the possibilities this new field represents.

The impact of the Health Professions Educational Assistance Act on state mental health systems.

One effect of the Health Professions Educational Assistance Act of 1976 is to severely limit the number of foreign medical graduates entering the United States. To examine the impact of the law in Michigan, the authors gathered data on the number of psychiatrists practicing in the state and projected future manpower needs. They conclude that it is unlikely that, given other provisions in the law, American medical graduates can numerically replace foreign medical graduates, and that alternative manpower resources will have to be developed. State mental health systems must form new relationships with universities and the private psychiatric sector, and new methods of training personnel and sharing resources must be developed. The authors emphasize the importance of giving state mental health systems sufficient time and resources to develop effective manpower plans.

Health organization in developing countries: innovations in the Peoples Republic of China.

The medical care delivery systems of most low-income countries are largely patterned on those of industrialized societies and are ill suited to the needs of developing countries. The present alternative model of health care in China has evolved after prolonged and often bitter debate extending over twenty years. The system that has been developed is one that appears uniquely suited to the needs of a large rural developing country; but it has been achieved in large part not through the medical profession but by evolving a system based upon participation by the people themselves and the development of new health-worker roles.
