Unusual three-dimensional bite mark evidence in a homicide case.

A comparison has been made between bite marks observed on the nose of a female homicide victim and the configuration of the dental structures of a male suspect. The victim's bite marks showed a number of demonstrable characteristics which could be reproduced by models of the dentition of the suspect. Special peculiarities within and between individual teeth, together with the upper and lower jaw relationship, were demonstrably consistent with the bite mark patterns on the victim's nose. Detailed examination of the scientific evidence led the dental investigators to the conclusion that there was a positive match between the suspect's dentition and the bite mark on the decedent's nose. The dental investigation and subsequent dental testimony were prime factors leading to the defendant's conviction of manslaughter in the first case in California involving the major use of bite mark evidence.

Bites and Stings

Handguns and homicide. A public health problem.

Homicide by handgun is a public health problem. No public health-oriented attempts at prevention have been made. A poll of physicians showed strong opinion (1) favoring more stringent controls on the availability of handguns and (2) supporting direct expression of opinion on this issue by physicians within the framework of organized medicine. Physicians can fulfill an obligation to their patients by formulating policy within organized medicine on the handgun issue.

Attitude of Health Personnel

The use of drawings for psychiatric evaluation of a defendant in a case of homicide.

From an initial spontaneous drawing on the back of a cigarette carton and through a series of subsequent drawings, a defendant, who shot and killed his victim before five witnesses, was granted a complete psychiatric examination on the findings of the drawing analysis. He was evaluated as a paranoid schizophrenic and eventually was acquitted but found insane and committed to a state hospital for treatment. His drawings indicated his threatened sexual identity through a disturbed body image while his movement from reality to disintegration and back is evidenced in corresponding crystalline and fragmentary form productions. The case points out the significance of drawings for psychiatric examination and evidence where they are available. An outline and discussion is appended of the history of the determination of criminal responsibility.
