Nonreciprocal chromosome translocation t(5;14) in cancers of the kidney: adenocarcinoma of the renal parenchyma and transitional cell carcinoma of the kidney pelvis.

Chromosome studies were done on an adenocarcinoma of the kidney and a transitional cell carcinoma of the kidney. The adenocarcinoma was in the renal parenchyma, whereas the transitional cell carcinoma was in the kidney pelvis. The adenocarcinoma was moderately well differentiated, and the transitional cell tumor was poorly differentiated. The adenocarcinoma was hypotetraploid, with 69-75 chromosomes per cell, and the transitional cell carcinoma was pseudodiploid, with 46 chromosomes. Both tumors showed a nonreciprocal t(5;14) translocation that resulted in a 5q- and a 14q+ chromosome with loss of 14q material. The breakpoints were in bands 5q13 and 14q22. Both tumors also contained an extra 5q- chromosome. The oncogene c-fms is normally situated in band 5q34 and so may have been translocated onto 14q, although whether it has been activated is conjectural. The t(5;14) translocation may be another tissue-specific cancer chromosome change.

[Correlation between human kidney shape and kidney pelvis type].

On the basis of a sample consisting of 200 cadavers of both sexes in the age group from 0 to 65 years, a study was performed concerning kidney shape, type of kidney pelvis as well as attempts to correlate the relationship between the 2 kidney traits. In the first phase of analysis of experimental data, attention was paid to the appearance of sex-linked differences, as well as changes arising from the age, seen in the afore mentioned traits. In the second phase, exact statistical analysis was performed to show the relationship of kidney shape with renal pelvis type. The performed analyses indicates that the connection between kidney measurements and renal pelvis type is weak and statistically insignificant.

[Diagnosis of a non-functioning kidney pelvis in adults: a report on 12 cases (author's transl)].

Two types of non-functioning supernumerary kidney pelvis are defined by analyzing 12 cases discovered in adult life. Those of congenital origin from glomerular aplasia, sometimes associated with a ureterocele or an ectopic anastomosis, and those due to an acquired lesion such as lithiasis, vesico-ureteral reflux, or secondary infection of a pocket of fluid. Radiological diagnosis is made by IVU with descending cystography and films taken during micturition. Cystoscopy and possibly retrograde ureteropyelography are essential in order to confirm the diagnosis.
