De novo desmoplastic neurotropic melanoma of the lower lip: a neoplasm with ominous behavior.

Desmoplastic neurotropic melanoma represents a rare histologic variant of malignant melanoma that is characterized by a proliferation of spindle cells in a densely collagenous stroma with pronounced neurotropism. A 60-year-old man appeared for evaluation of a mass in the lower lip. The labial mucosa was intact, and the lesion had been present for 2 months. The tumor was surgically removed, and after immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis it was diagnosed as desmoplastic neurotropic melanoma. The tumor recurred 6 months later, with involvement of the inferior alveolar nerve.

Malignant salivary gland neoplasms of the lip.

The charts of fourteen patients with malignant salivary gland tumors of the lip were reviewed. These patients represented 1 per cent of all patients seen during this same period of time with malignant salivary gland tumors. No specific etiologic factors were implicated except that the tumors occurred predominantly in white males. The overall results of treatment were poor, perhaps secondary to delay in diagnosis, very biologically aggressive tumors, or inadequate or improper treatment. Hopefully, the 20 per cent survival can be improved with planned combined sequential surgery and radiation in those selected high risk patients.

[Reconstructive plastic repair in cancer of the lips].

Lips neoplasm represent 20% from all maxillo-facial cancers, more than 90% being localized on the inferior lip. This paper present the results of the reconstructive surgery on 208 patients treated over 10 years (1984-1993) at the Bucco-Maxillo-Facial Surgery Clinic from Iaşi. The procedures were different according with the dimensions of the tumor and several other factors regarding there histopathological type, moment of the diagnostic, age etc.
