Margarine and butter consumption, eczema and allergic sensitization in children. The LISA birth cohort study.

It has been hypothesized that margarine intake is associated with allergic diseases. However, the epidemiological evidence in children is limited. The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between dietary intake of margarine and butter with eczema and allergic sensitization in 2-yr-old children. Data of 2582 children at the age of 2 yr with complete information on exposure to diet and allergic outcome were analyzed in a German prospective birth cohort study (LISA). Margarine and butter intake were estimated from a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire about general fat use at home combined with questions on the child's spread intake. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied comparing predominant margarine and predominant butter intake with consumption of both butter and margarine. Predominant margarine intake was positively associated with lifetime prevalence of symptomatic eczema (aOR: 1.71; 95% CI: 1.12-2.61) and doctor-diagnosed eczema (aOR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.36-3.25) and allergic sensitization against inhalant allergens (aOR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.01-4.41) at the age of 2 yr. No statistically significant associations were found for butter intake. Stratification for parental history of atopic diseases indicated that children at high risk of atopic diseases have higher effect estimates for margarine intake compared to children without parental history of atopic diseases. Stratification for sex also showed higher effect estimates in boys. Children with predominant margarine consumption had an increased risk for eczema and allergic sensitization, while butter intake was no predictor for allergic diseases. However, we could not determine whether margarine is a causal risk factor or whether other lifestyle factors have influenced this association.

Kinetic properties of pyruvate kinase from the epaxial muscle of the marine fishes Mugil lisa and Chaetoditerus faber.

Kinetic studies were carried out on the reaction catalyzed by pyruvate kinase (ATP:pyruvate phosphotransferase, E.C. 2.7.1.40) purified from white striated (epaxial) muscle of two marine fish Mugil lisa (Brazilian mullet) and Chaetoditerus faber (harvest fish). This included the establishment of kinetic parameters. Attention was given to the effect of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (Fru-P2) on PK activity. Effects of ATP, alanine and the divalent ions, Mg2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, Be2+ and Co2+, on the fish muscle enzyme were also studied.

What makes Mona Lisa smile?

To study the ability of humans to read subtle changes in facial expression, we applied reverse correlation technique to reveal visual features that mediate understanding of emotion expressed by the face. Surprising findings were that (1) the noise added to a test face image had profound effect on the facial expression and (2) in almost every instance the new expression was meaningful. To quantify the effect, we asked naïve observers to rank the face of Mona Lisa superimposed with noise, based on their perception of her emotional state along the sad/happy dimension. Typically, a hundred trials (with 10 or more samples for each rank category) were sufficient to reveal areas altering the facial expression, which is about two orders of magnitude less than in the other reverse correlation studies. Moreover, the perception of smiling in the eyes was solely attributable to a configurational effect projecting from the mouth region.

Mutagencity and antimutagencity studies of lipidic extracts from yellowtail fish (Seriola lalandi), lisa fish (Mugil cephalus) and cazón fish (Mustelus lunulatus).

Organic extracts from fresh and smoked yellowtail fish (Seriola lalandi), lisa fish (Mugil cephalus) and cazon fish (Mustelus lunulatus) were tested for mutagenicity using Ames Salmonella tester strains TA98 and TA100 with metabolic activation (S9). Also, the antimutagenicity of the organic extract from yellowtail fish was tested against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Yellowtail fish extract was sequentially fractionated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and each fraction was also tested for antimutagenicity. None of the fresh species showed mutagenicity. Extract from smoked yellowtail showed the highest mutagenic potential among the smoked species tested. Organic extract from fresh yellowtail reduced the number of revertants caused by AFB1 showing a dose response type of relationship. Sequential TLC fractionation of the antimutagenic extract produced four antimutagenic fractions from fresh yellowtail fish. These results that the lipidic fraction of the species tested contains at least four compounds with chemoprotective properties that reduce the mutagenicity of AFB1.

The Mona Lisa of modern science.

No molecule in the history of science has reached the iconic status of the double helix of DNA. Its image has been imprinted on all aspects of society, from science, art, music, cinema, architecture and advertising. This review of the Mona Lisa of science examines the evolution of its form at the hands of both science and art.

Obesity, a disorder of nutrient partitioning: the MONA LISA hypothesis.

The mechanisms underlying different types of obesity have been gradually clarified. Animal models with hypothalamic, genetic or dietary obesity have been examined with a feedback model. Four common final pathways are involved in this model. One of these final common pathways is the sympathetic nervous system. Most Obesities kNown Are Low In Sympathetic Activity states the MONA LISA Hypothesis. A second common pathway is the endocrine system involving adrenal glucocorticosteroids. The third common pathway is hyperphagia. Although not essential for most obesities, hyperphagia may be essential in animals with injury to the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus. The final pathway is reduced physical activity. The tonic activity of these systems and their response to changes in the diet affect nutrient partitioning between fat and protein. This framework has been used to review genetic obesity, hypothalamic obesity and dietary obesity.

LISA: an intranet-based flexible database for protein crystallography project management.

The increase in the number of projects carried out in protein crystallography laboratories has emphasized the need for effective management of project information and data. To meet this need, a flexible web-accessible database for protein crystallography project management (LISA) has been developed using the open-source software MySQL and PHP4. The database contains information about all aspects of structure-determination projects, including primer and plasmid sequences, protein expression, purification and crystallization results, structure coordinate files and resultant publications. The database web pages include links to relevant servers and contain, in addition, tools for processing stored information. The software package is freely available.

Mona Lisa syndrome: solving the enigma of the Gioconda smile.

The Mona Lisa smile is presented as a possible example of facial muscle contracture that develops after Bell's palsy when the facial nerve has undergone partial wallerian degeneration and has regenerated. The accompanying synkinesis would explain many of the known facts surrounding the painting and is a classic example of Leonardo da Vinci as the compulsive anatomist who combined art and science.

The case of Lisa H. The role of mental health professionals where the social contract is violated.

This case concerns a young woman accused by the State of California of Welfare of fraud. She was sent by the court to the writer for evaluation of her competence to make mature judgments and, later, she was asked by the Welfare Department to be counselled by the writer, a request she actively resisted. A case like this raises a major issue which has implications for our ideas about responsibility of the State to its members, for the role of mental health professionals in society, and for the lives of individuals who may, for whatever reason, violate what most of us understand to be the "social contract" we share. The issue is a familiar one, but is important nevertheless and highlighted in a new way by the issues in the case of Lisa. The issue is this: When is it proper for a mental health professional to be allowed to intervene in the relationship and transactions that may be occurring between the state and individuals? This issue is recurrent and there are surely some well established instances where it is appropriate. Consider a case in which such intervention was requested by the court (and the Welfare Department) in a city wherein such intervention seems to be clearly inappropriate and possibly harmful both to citizens in general, professionals in the fields of welfare, and the individual.

Entry age into day care and later development of allergic disorders--results from the city of Leipzig cohort of the LISA study.

The situation in early childhood is supposed to be a risk factor for later development of allergic diseases. The birth cohort from the LISA (Lifestyle-Immune System-Allergy) study gave us the opportunity to investigate the relationship between early childhood situation and the development of allergic diseases. This paper describes our findings regarding to the relationship between entry age into day care and obstructive bronchitis as well as allergic rhinitis and atopic eczema. Study was designed as a longitudinal birth cohort study. Children were examined by a physician at birth, 1/2 year, 1 year, 1 1/2 year, 2 years, 3 years and 4 years. Further information was collected using a structured questionnaire which was answered by the parents. Outcomes under investigation were atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis, wheezing (with and without cold), obstructive bronchitis and asthma (after 2nd year of life). Logistic regression analysis adjusted for infectious diseases of the mother during pregnancy, vaccination of the mother during pregnancy, antibiotics, prenatal smoking of the mother or other persons in the apartment and vaccination state showed an significant promoting effect of entry age into day care against obstructive bronchitis over the first three years of life (OR 1/2 year: 8.55; 95%CI: 2.93...24.97; OR 1st year: 4.96; 95% CI: 1.73...14.24; OR 2nd year: 3.06 95% CI: 1...9.37). A further significant effect was found for crowding against asthma in the fourth year of life (OR 25.7; 95%CI: 1.65...400.17). No significant effects were found between the other periods under investigation (1st year until 4th year of life). On the base of our findings we recommend an entry age into day care of more than six months to prevent effects shown.

[The Mona Lisa: a compendium of Internal Medicine].

Through the history of art many artists in their works have portrayed different signs of pathologies. In some cases, the illnesses are easily recognised, although in others a well trained specialist is necessary to reach the diagnosis. Within the numerous works of art that have attracted medical interest, there is none comparable to the most famous and enigmatic portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci, the Mona Lisa.
