The VEPSY UPDATED project: technical and clinical rationale.

The emergence of new shared media, such as the Internet and virtual reality are changing the ways in which people relate, communicate, and live. Health care, and in particular clinical psychology, is one of the areas that could be most dramatically reshaped by these new technologies. To exploit and understand this potential is the overall goal of the "Telemedicine and Portable Virtual Environment in Clinical Psychology"--VEPSY UPDATED--an European Community funded research project (IST-2000-25323, http://www.vepsy.com) whose specific goal is the development of different PC based virtual reality modules to be used in clinical assessment and treatment. In particular the developed modules have been using to address the following pathologies: anxiety disorders; male impotence and premature ejaculation; obesity, bulimia and binge-eating disorders. The chapter details the general technical and clinical characteristics of the developed modules.

[The elderly and their existence model. A study with projective technics].

Elderly subjects free from psychiatric diseases and hospitalised at centres run in accordance with different models have been examined. The T.A.T. was carried out. Certain common elements emerge that would appear to be related to the senile age. Others appear to be psychological superstructures related to the different conditions of existence.

[Personality of the dyslexic child. Clinical data and contribution of projective technics].

The present paper focuses its attention on the personality disorders among relatively old dyslexic children whose symptom persists beyong logopedic reeducations of a long duration. The degree of disorientation of our subjects runs parallel to the degree of fragmentation of personality. In the Rorschach and TAT tests, the image of the Self is ill-differenciated from a poorly structured maternal image and pleads for a primary defect of the mother-child relation at a preobjectal level. The paternal function is obvious but ill-invested, therefore the relationship between severe and persisting dyslexia on the one hand, and psychosis on the other.

MDTV Telemedicine Project: technical considerations in videoconferencing for medical applications.

In spite of the many advances in technology, complex problems must be addressed in establishing and maintaining a telemedicine system. Although most such systems are built around interactive videoconferencing (IAVC) equipment, clinical requirements dictate that these systems offer more than traditional IAVC systems. Input from system users should be obtained early in the design process to ensure the functionality necessary to achieve maximum utilization. Surprisingly, audio, rather than video, signals may present the greatest challenge to achieving consistent, high-quality videoconferencing encounters. Audio technical problems can be frustrating for patients and providers alike and can undermine user confidence in IAVC as a vehicle for healthcare delivery. A capability for remote access and control of components at distant sites seems essential to providing cost-effective and technically reliable service.

[Technical project for the management and functioning of an Internal Medicine care unit].

The Internal Medicine Services have a central role in the medical care in our hospital system both as to the volume of patients attended and their variety, reflecting of the preparation and multi-tasking ability of their professionals. The current norms for coverage of heads-of-service demands the presentation of a management project that must test our knowledge, skills and aptitudes for the clinical and medical management and in order to reflect them in a document of commitment with the management and with our fellows who are a part of the care unit. The person in charge of the service, as boss, agent or leader, is the one who must mark the strategic lines, to indicate the aims, to define the projects, to coordinate the tasks and to evaluate the results with other offers to obtain agreed-upon aims controlling the different points of view. Our professional and social commitment is: sharing clinical management with ethics, quality and welfare safety, to offer our patients (consumer or users) the best results (effectiveness), with useful measurements (efficacy) and with the minors drawbacks and costs (efficiency). The aim of this work is to offer the elements that are necessary for the accomplishment and introduction of a project of clinical management in a service of internal medicine, highlighting its methodology and the most important problems than can arise as well as the possible care alternatives.

[Personality structure and mental anorexia. A study using projective technics].

A sample of 73 females suffering from mental anorexia is examined. All were subjected to the Rorschach test. It emerges that the anorexic patients in the sample are basically characterised by hysterical or obsessive type personality structures. They have no structural traits definable as paradigmatic of the syndrome. The only feature connotating all subjects of the group consists of conflictual situations with regard to the maternal figure.
