Effects of pentachlorophenol on the development of estuarine communities.

Pentachlorophenol affected the composition of communities of estuarine organisms developed in sand from planktonic larvae in estuarine water that flowed through ten control aquaria and ten aquaria per exposure concentration averaging 7, 76, or 622 microgram/liter. Annelids, arthropods, and mollusks were the numerically dominant phyla when animals were collected in a 1-mm-mesh sieve after 9 wk of exposure. Mollusks were markedly fewer at 7 microgram/liter; annelids and arthropods at 76 microgram/liter. Almost no animals occurred at 622 microgram/liter. The total numbers of individuals and species were significantly less (alpha=0.01) in aquaria exposed to 76 microgram/liter than in those unexposed or exposed to 7 microgram/liter.

Snail control in urban sites in Brazil with slow-release hexabutyldistannoxane and pentachlorophenol.

Slow release formulations of hexabutyldistannoxane (TBTO) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) were tested for the control of Biomphalaria tenagophila in 52 urban sites in Rio de Janeiro. TBTO acted faster and lasted longer than PCP and at 15 g/m(2) it eliminated snails from 76% of the treated sites for 1 year. Water pollution and rate of flow had no significant influence on the molluscicidal properties of either compound, but alkalinity lowered the activity of TBTO. Failure to control snail populations was due mainly to human interference and to the non-treatment of adjacent breeding sites that were temporarily dry and therefore overlooked.

Hazardous substances. Determination of pentachlorophenol in toy paints.

A simple procedure is described for the routine determination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in various types of toy paints. PCP can be determined in water colors, body colors, showcard paints, gouache paints, and colored inks. PCP is extracted from the sample with acetone, followed by quantitative gas chromatographic analysis of the concentrated acetone extract on stainless steel columns containing 15% Carbo-wax 20M on 60-80 mesh Chromosorb P (AW). As little as 1 ppm PCP can be determined with recoveries ranging from 50 to 100%, depending on the type of paint. The presence of PCP in samples is confirmed by thin layer chromatography, using dansyl chloride as a fluorescent labeling compound. By this method as little as 4 ppm can be determined. The results of PCP determinations in 65 commerical samples are presented.

Absorption

[Pentachlorophenol poisoning in nestlings of canaries (Serinus canarius) (author's transl)].

Using binder twine of bales of straw as nesting material for canaries apparently resulted in a reduction of hatchability. However, the outstanding feature was the high mortality rate during the first week after hatching, with a peak on the fourth day and nestlings never growing any older than three months. Other symptoms consisted in marked retardation of growth and poor growth of feathers. The adult birds presented a normal appearance. The most likely cause was the presence of pentachlorophenol (PCP) averaging 285 ppm).

Gas-liquid chromatographic determination of pentachlorophenol in milk.

A gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) method developed by other workers for determining pentachlorophenol (PCP) in water has been adapted for determining PCP in raw and homogenized milk. PCP is extracted from milk with benzene and from the benzene into a potassium carbonate solution. Acetic anhydride is added to the aqueous solution to form PCP acetate, which is extracted into hexane and then determined by electron capture GLC. Duplicate determinations of PCP in milk fortified at levels of 0.02, 0.2, and 2.0 ppm gave respective average recoveries of 80.0, 87.2, and 85.0%. PCP levels as low as 0.005 ppm can be detected in 20 g milk.

Mass fragmentographic determination of pentachlorophenol in rainbow trout.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is extracted from selected tissues of rainbow trout and converted to pentachloroanisole (PCA) by means of alkylation in the presence of potassium carbonate as a condensing agent. Pentachlorophenetole (PPT) is used as an internal standard. The electron impact mass fragmentography is carried out by monitoring m/e 280 (PCA), 294 (PPT), and 237. A plot of peak height vs. concentration is linear from 0.03 to 4.0 ng. Accuracy and precision of the method is +/-2% (N - 36). The results are accurate enough to warrant the use of this method for determining PCP in fish, as well as for monitoring PCP from various environmental sources. In addition, this technique provides a simple and rapid method by which a mixture of PCA and PCP can be determined simultaneously.

Animals

Pentachlorophenol distribution in a fresh water ecosystem.

The results of this investigation have shown that PCP persisted in leaf litter and sediments for at least seventeen months following contamination. This persistence provides a potential for continuous contamination of the water column and biological magnification via detritus- and benthic-feeding organisms. An investigation of these factors is presently underway.
