The Perinatal Continuing Education Program (PCEP) was conducted throughout South Carolina. The program was well received and greatly valued; however, participants requested more information covering obstetrics. To meet this need, we developed the Perinatal Education Program for Community Hospitals (PEPCH), patterned after and similar to PCEP, and tested it in South Carolina and southern California. In the South Carolina trial, the posttest was found reliable (Kuder-Richardson index = .77). In the California trial, the pretest/posttest reliability was confirmed. Learning for nurses was documented (pretest = 30.8 +/- 5.3, posttest = 36.8 +/- 5.5, P less than .001). Completion rate for this voluntary program was 84%. We conclude that a self-study program based in the community hospital can improve knowledge of perinatal professionals.

The effect of adenoidectomy (controls) on habitual open mouth posture was compared with adenoidectomy in combination with a logopedic instruction program (cases). One hundred and fifty-nine children were included (aged 2-10 years, mean age 4.6 years). The instruction program consisted of three individual logopedic sessions at 1 week, 2 weeks and 4 weeks postoperatively. One week preoperatively, 2 months and 1 year postoperatively an estimation of open mouth posture was carried out. Two months postoperatively there was a significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.001), but 1 year postoperatively this difference had disappeared (p = 0.526). The logopedic instruction program was not effective for the youngest age-group (<3.6 years).

This report presents a description of the principles of programmed instruction and an explanation of all major components of a program. No attempt is made to review or critique all available speech and language programs, but certain programs are discussed in some detail in order to illustrate adequate application of programming principles.
An interactive multimedia computer-assisted instruction on congenital heart disease was developed to increase nursing students' understanding of congenital heart disease. Computer-assisted instruction, with its ability to incorporate sound, visuals, and interactivity, provides a multimedia and interactive learning environment that enhances the teaching and learning process. Computer-assisted instruction is a cost- and time-effective teaching and learning strategy that can be tailored to the subject and student population. This article presents information regarding the process of developing an interactive multimedia computer-assisted instruction program on congenital heart disease.
