[Iodine metabolism in uranium poisoning according to whole-body radiometry and activation analysis].

Experiments on rats showed that in chronic uranium poisoning the value of the intrathyroid iodine pool changed and time-dependent radioiodine recirculation relationship between the thyroid and the organism was upset. The process of the thyroid adaptation is a complex one, viz. the hormonal capacity of the organism being kept up through an increase in the mass of the thyroid as well as by a higher rate of iodine exchange.

Scintigraphic and radiocirculographic studies on the effect of As2 on cat cerebral circulation.

Various well-known agents with a favourable influence on cerebral circulation were used as a basis for creating new methods to asses the effects on this vascular region in experimental animals. A technique was worked out for radiocirculography and simultaneous radiometry, as well as for scanning and simultaneous radiometry of cat brain. Radiocirculography, followed by scintigraphy, proved to be among the best methods used for assessment of the effect of As2 on cerebral circulation. Simultaneous radiometry with the methods mentioned above had only orientational value. Radiocirculographic and scanning data after application of As2 in a dose of 10 mg/kg are close to those for nicotinic acid in a dose of 1 mg/kg. Similar to the data of the isotopic methods after application of As2 in a dose of 5 mg/kg are the results obtained with 5 mg/kg cinnarizin, which suggests a similar machanism of action.

[Comparative evaluation of modern intraoperative diagnostic methods in malignant gliomas of the brain].

The following methods were employed: Intravital staining with bromphenol blue (70 patients), radiometry with P 32 (127 patients), echo encephalography (12 patients,) puncture biopsy (18 patients), rheometry (96 patients). Bromphenol blue is injected into the a. cerebri media or the supraclinoidal a. carotis interna and stains the periphery of malignant tumours and the entire tissue of benign tumours. Radiometry also serves for the intraoperative finding of tumour remainders which must be located at least 20 to 22 mm below the cortex of the brain. Tumour biopsy was carried out with a sharp cannula to avoid deformation of the tissue cylinder. Rheometry proved to be very useful when avoiding the mixing with blood, liquor, and cyst fluid at the measuring tip.

Monitoring of experimental arthritis in rabbits.

The effect of ambient temperature and air flow on the radiometric measurement of experimental arthritis in rabbit knee joints has been studied. Temperature changes due to inflammation in such joints could be detected up to 70 days after induction of the arthritis by the use of radiometry. The method has been used to quantitate the anti-inflammatory activity of intra-articularly injected cortisol acetate and orally administered aspirin. It is suggested that this method of noninvasive monitoring has a number of advantages over other procedures.

Thermography and rheumatic diseases.

The common factor in most of the rheumatic diseases is an arthritis. Radiometry and thermography have been shown to indicate and measure heat resulting from localised inflammation. In rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis, osteoarthrosis, gout and ankylosing spondylitis abnormal heat distribution has been recorded over affected joints. Experimental evidence has shown that temperature change reflects the inflammatory state of the joint, and that this may be used to measure the effect of therapy by oral, systemic and local drug therapy, and also surgery, i.e. synovectomy.
