Diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginalis in male urethritis.

Trichomonas vaginalis was diagnosed in 42 (19%) of 227 adult males with urethral discharge. In 27 men (15%) T. vaginalis was isolated together with Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Non-gonococcal urethritis was diagnosed in 15 patients and T. vaginalis was isolated from 47% of such patients. Stained smear preparations, i.e. RapiDiff and acridine orange of modified Diamond's media, were superior to wet smear microscopy for the identification of T. vaginalis. RapiDiff stain was the most sensitive and identified 41 of 42 (98%) positive cultures. It is recommended that all turbid culture media should be stained for the optimal diagnosis of trichomoniasis.

Trichomonas vaginalis associated with nongonococcal urethritis and prostatitis.

Trichomonas vaginalis was recovered from three (1.7%) of 179 men with nongonococcal urethritis. Prostatitis was found in 11 (8%) of 138 of these men who had prostatic examinations; T. vaginalis was recovered from two of the 11. Serologic evidence (an indirect hemagglutination titer of greater than or equal to 1:80) was found in 20 (14%) of 146 men; four of the 20 had prostatitis and two of these had prostatitis associated with T. vaginalis. In a group of 26 men with urethritis and prostatitis associated with T. vaginalis, the typical clinical presentation was persistent urethritis and/or prostatitis due to an antibiotic-resistant agent.

Prevalence of HIV-related risk behaviors and STDs among incarcerated adolescents.

PURPOSE: To determine the HIV-related risk behaviors and STDs in a population of incarcerated adolescents in order to strategically target education and prevention efforts. METHODS: A single point-in-time prevalence study based on an analysis of intake medical records of 1,215 incarcerated youth were analyzed for HIV risk behaviors and STD history. RESULTS: Incarcerated adolescents report high rates of risk behaviors for HIV infection and STDs, with 75% reporting three or more sex partners, 25% never using condoms and 19% having a current diagnosis of at least one STD. Significantly more females than males reported a history of STDs and had higher rates of current diagnoses of chlamydia/non-gonococcal urethritis, trichomonas and gonorrhea. CONCLUSIONS: Ethnic/racial and gender differences were found in risk behaviors for STDs among a sample of incarcerated adolescents.

High rates of Trichomonas vaginalis among men attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic: implications for screening and urethritis management.

Trichomonas is a cause of nongonococcal urethritis (NGU); however, studies of its prevalence in men have been hampered by the lack of sensitive diagnostics. DNA amplification allows for reappraisal of the extent of infection in men. Men attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic were tested for trichomonas, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. The prevalence of these pathogens was 17%, 19.6%, and 17.7% respectively. In men with NGU, 19.9% were infected with trichomonas. These data have implications for treatment of NGU and control of trichomoniasis.

[Urethritis caused by Trichomonas vaginalis in men. Epidemiology].

The interviews of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) done in the Dispensario "Martínez Anido" of Madrid in the period understood between September of 1984 and September of 1985 are revised. Among all of the 1,370 surveys, the trichomonal urethritis in the male, represents 2.2% of all of the urethritis and 4.6% of the nongonococcal urethritis in the male. Mean age of patients was 35 years, the social-economic level was inferior than those which we observed in others STD, all of the cases were heterosexual and the source of contamination was in 100% a prostitute of a low level. The answer to the treatment with metronidazole of the only doses of 2 gr. was satisfactory in all cases.
