Fungal infections of the skin in children.

Fungal infections of the skin in children are common and may mimic many other dermatoses. Diagnostic techniques are simple and inexpensive; Wood's light examination, KOH wet mounts, and preferably fungal culture should be performed on all suspected lesions.

Acetates

[Dermatophytoses which may be easily misinterpreted].

Almost absent inflammtory reaction or unusually deep inflammation can lead to atypical varieties of dermatophytoses. Some of the more common varieties of this kind are briefly portrayed. The importance of mycological examination, both microscopic and cultural, is pointed out.

Culture Media

[Clotrimazol therapy of skin mycoses].

Clinical evaluation of a 1% clotrimazole cream and solution on 236 in and out patients with different clinical manifestations of mycotic infections was done. Clotrimazole, both cream and solution, is an effective and well tolerated agent in the treatment of infections due to dermatophytes and yeasts. Best results were recorded with patients suffering from pityriasis versicolor and erythrasma, and interdigital erosion.

Administration, Topical

Comparison of in vitro activity of undecylenic acid and tolnaftate against athlete's foot fungi.

Undecylenic acid and tolnaftate were tested in an in vitro test system to evaluate their relative "killing time" efficacy against Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, and Epidermophyton floccosum. Commercial products containing these active agents were tested similarly. The pure active agents were equivalent in activity. The commercial product containing undecylenic acid appeared to be more effective against the test organisms than did the product containing tolnaftate.

Epidermophyton

[Recent findings in dermatophytic skin diseases (author's transl)].

The most important current research centers on immunobiological questions. It is suggested that the delayed Trichophyton reaction is the immune mechanism which protects patients after a primary dermatophyte infection. Griseofulvin is the treatment of choice today. The questionnaire sent to all practising dermatologists in Germany investigated the frequency of certain possible serious side effects. The new once daily 500 mg griseofulvin tablet will have to be in clinical use for some time yet before its efficacy can be assessed.

Dermatomycoses

[Localization of solitary dermatophytic lesions in man].

The occurrence of three causative organisms of the so called intertriginous dermatophytoses--Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale and T. rubrum--was compared according to the localization of the lesions. The differentiation of invasion into solitary and combined sites showed a prevalence of E. floccosum in solitary lesions and T. rubrum in combined lesions. In T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale, the frequency of occurrence of both types of the lesions was approximately the same. The differences found suggest various adaptation-ability of dermatophytes to different parts of the body. The study of localization of solitary lesions is important from the epidemiological point of view because it assists in revealing the sources of dermatophytic infection and the ways of transmission.

Arm

[Onychomyosis caused by Trichopyton soudanense. 1st isolation in Venezuela].

Trichophyton soudanense is a dermatophyte wich is of highest incidence in Africa. Cases of tinea produced by this fungus have been described in England, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, the United States and Brazil. This investigation reports the first isolation of this fungus in Venezuela, from a lesion of the nail in a female patient who has always resided in Venezuela. The identification of this fungus was based on macroscopic and microscopic morphological characteristics; biological properties, scare or no growth when the only nitrogen source in the culture medium is provided by potassium or ammonium nitrate, and the production of dark pigment when inoculated in Lowenstein-Jensen medium. Experimental innoculation in animals produced an endothrix parasitism of the hair. Reference is made ot the incidence of the most frequently occuring dermatophytes in Venezuela.
