Effects of laughing and weeping on mood and heart rate variability.

We investigated the effects of laughing and weeping induced by watching comedy and tragedy videos on mood and autonomic nervous function. Ten healthy female subjects volunteered for the experiment. Chest electrocardiogram and respiration curve were recorded before, after, and during watching a comedy or a tragedy video. We also asked them to fill out profiles of mood states (POMS) to evaluate their mood states while watching videos. Autonomic nervous function was estimated by spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). All subjects more or less laughed and wept while watching comedy and tragedy videos, respectively. Anger-hostility score of the POMS decreased and vigor score increased significantly after watching comedy videos, while depression-dejection score increased significantly after watching tragedy ones. Although both contents tended to increase a low to high frequency component ratio (LF/HF ratio) of HRV, the time course of responses was different. The LF/HF ratio which reflects cardiac sympathovagal balance increased immediately after they started watching comedy videos, and returned to the basal level right after they stopped watching, whereas the LF/HF ratio increased gradually to a lesser extent while watching tragedy videos. In contrast, the high-frequency component which reflects cardiac parasympathetic nerve activity gradually decreased while watching both videos but did not return to the basal level after watching tragedy ones. These results suggest that laughing has strong but transient effects on the autonomic nervous system, while weeping or feeling sad has moderate but sustained effects on it.

[Influence of different clipping intensity and R/FR ratio in light radiation on tillering of weeping lovegrass].

Pot experiment with weeping lovegrass was conducted laboratory in the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Texas Tech University in 1996. The plants grown in green house were used to study the effect of different clipping intensities on tillering, and those grown in laboratory were used to study the interaction between different R/FR(red/farred) ratio of the light reaching to the lower strata of the canopy and different clipping intensities on tillering. The results show that increasing clipping intensity decreased the net gain tillers, bt R/FR ratio had no significant effect on tillering, except no clipping treatment. The compensatory growth effect of tillering did not existed at all clipping intensities, but the elongation speed of young leaves quickened with clipping intensities. It is suggested that suitable utilization, intensified utilization and no utilization were all not beneficial to the growth and development of weeping lovegrass.

[Cytogenetic and anatomic features of the weeping birch in the 30-km zone surrounding the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant].

We studied the development of the vegetative and generative spheres in the weeping birch from the 30-km zone surrounding the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant. Being the most sensitive ontogenetic stages, the mitotic and meiotic processes are capable of responding to the effects of various factors, including unfavorable environmental factors. Studies were carried out from 1998 to 2000 in Novovoronezh under conditions of potential hazard for normal development (a possible joint effect of chronic ionizing irradiation at low doses from the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant and elevated concentrations of some chemical substances as side products of the plant activity) and in the ecologically pure territory of the Biological Station Venevitinovo of the Voronezh State University. Significant deviations from the normal course of mitotic and meiotic processes have been recorded in the experimental variant and specific types of disturbances have been described. A suggestion has been put forward concerning some mechanisms underlying the weeping birch adaptation to unfavorable environmental conditions. Specifically, it was shown that the trees studied were of a mixoploid nature. No such studies have ever been carried out in the region of this nuclear power plant, one of the oldest in Russia.

Expression of gibberellin biosynthetic gene in Japanese weeping cherry.

The expressions of gibberellin (GA) biosynthetic gene in both of the upright and the weeping types of Japanese flowering cherry (Prunus spachiana) were investigated. A part of the GA 3-beta hydroxylase gene of Prunus spachiana (Ps3bhx), which synthesizes active GAs, were amplified by real-time RT-PCR technique. The accumulation of Ps3bhx mRNA in the weeping type were much more than that in the upright type.

[The dissociated laughing and weeping in apoplectic insult (author's transl)].

A patient with the volitional type of facial palsy showed in the arteriography an obstruction of the middle cerebral artery without affecting the thalamostriatal arteries. As laughing and weeping are motivated in the cerebral trunc they must have been projected through the mesopallium (which includes the thalamus) to the facial nuclei. These two behaviour elements did not show any modification on the paretic side, indicating so, that they are phylogenetic old elements, normally modified by the volitional influence. The original weeping expresses an appeal to the companion, the original laughing the readiness of affilation.

15N estimates of dinitrogen fixation in alfalfa-weeping lovegrass swards under field conditions.

Information on the amount and proportion of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) N derived from symbiotic N2 fixation is required in order to exploit this source of N in alfalfa-weeping lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula Schrad Nees) pastures in semiarid Argentina. A field experiment was conducted to determine N2 fixation by a legume grown alone or in two different associations with weeping lovegrass, using pure or associated lovegrass as the reference crop. On average, alfalfa derived over 80% of its N from fixation during the seeding year, equivalent to about 140 kg N ha-1. Compared to N2 fixation in the pure alfalfa sward, the percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 in alfalfa increased significantly in the associated pastures and even more so by increasing the seeding ratio of both crops sown in the same row. The atom % 15N excess in associated grass was sometimes slightly lower than that in pure lovegrass, suggesting any possible release of N from alfalfa and subsequent uptake by grass to have been small. The highest proportion of grass N that could have derived from the legume was estimated to be 23% in the second harvest, equivalent to only 6 kg N ha-1. Differences in atom % 15N excess of pure and associated grass reference plants did not significantly affect the estimated percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 in alfalfa.

A new method for treating weeping canals: clinical and histopathologic study.

In this study the effect of Nd:YAG laser on the apical oozing of the weeping canals was evaluated both clinically and histopathologically. It was noticed that application of the laser beam at energy 15 pps/1.50 w for 2-2.5 minutes to the apical position of these canals resulted in complete dryness of the canals in 82-23% of the cases. On the other hand most of the lased teeth become relatively asymptomatic after laser application. Histopathologic examination of the periapical lesion related to weeping canals showed marked improvement in the inflammatory condition. Sixty percent of lased cases showed grade 1 inflammation where 70% cases showed grade 3 inflammation in unlased cases.

Response of weeping willows to linear alkylbenzene sulfonate.

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is the most commonly used anionic surfactant in laundry detergents and cleaning agents. LAS compounds are found in surface waters and soils. The short-term acute toxicity of LAS to weeping willows (Salix babylonica L.) was investigated. Willow cuttings were grown in hydroponic solution spiked with LAS at 24.0+/-1 degrees C for 192 h. The normalized relative transpiration of plants was used to determine toxicity. Severe reduction of the transpiration was only found for high doses of LAS (240 mgl(-1)). Chlorophyll contents in leaves of treated plants varied with the dose of LAS, but there was no significant linear correlation. The activities of the enzymes superoxide dismutases (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) were quantified at the end of experiments. At higher concentrations of LAS (240 mgl(-1)), the activities of SOD and CAT were decreased. The correlation between the dose of LAS and the POD activity in leaf cells was the highest of all enzyme assays (R(2)=0.5). EC(50) values for a 50% inhibition of the transpiration of the trees were estimated to 374 mgl(-1) (72 h) and 166 mgl(-1) (192 h). Results from this experiment indicated that phytotoxic effects of LAS on willow trees are not expected for normal environmental conditions.

Treatment of pathologic laughing and weeping with amitriptyline.

Patients with bilateral forebrain disease may commonly manifest the syndrome of pathologic laughing and weeping. We investigated the efficacy of low-dose amitriptyline in 12 patients in whom this syndrome was a consequence of multiple sclerosis. In a double-blind crossover study comparing amitriptyline with placebo, eight patients experienced dramatic and significant improvement with amitriptyline (P = 0.02). The mean dose of amitriptyline was 57.8 mg per day and did not exceed 75 mg per day in any patient. Concurrent measurements of depression showed no change during the study. We conclude that amitriptyline is effective in the treatment of this disturbance of affective expression, and that this effect is distinct from the antidepressant effect of the medication.

Occupational allergy to weeping fig in plant keepers.

Plant keepers take regular care of green plants in public buildings and offices. One of the most common green plants in Scandinavia is weeping fig (Ficus benjamina). We have previously reported on two plant keepers sensitized to this plant, one had asthma and the other allergic rhinitis. We now report a study of four plant-leasing firms employing 60 plant keepers and 24 less exposed. Positive RAST and skin tests in 16 of the plant keepers and two of the employees showed them to be sensitized. All sensitized subjects suffered from conjunctivitis and/or rhinitis and six had asthma. Handling of green plants is a new example of an occupation which may cause IgE-mediated allergy.

Serum reactivity to other indoor ficus plants in patients with allergy to weeping fig (Ficus benjamina).

Ornamental plants have long been used for indoor decoration. An example is the india rubber tree (Ficus elastica). With the increased popularity of green plants, both in private homes and public premises, small-leaf species, such as weeping fig or Ficus benjamina (Fb), have become widely used. Exposure to dust from Fb may cause sensitization and allergic airway symptoms, which among occupationally exposed plant keepers occur both in atopics and non-atopics. The serum reactivity to sap extracts from Fb and seven other indoor plants of the genus Ficus were investigated with RAST and a RAST inhibition technique, using sera from 12 atopic subjects and 12 plant keepers, sensitized to Fb. The allergenic similarity between the different extracts was found to be extensive. The specific IgE antibodies with the highest concentrations in serum were those against Fb and its variegate form, "star light", with decreasing values for the other species, especially those with larger leaves. The binding of IgE antibodies to the other Ficus RAST discs could be completely inhibited by extract of Fb. These reactions were probably due to cross-reactivity. Sensitization is believed to occur by inhalation of allergen-enriched dust, emanating from the leaves of the plants. The high allergenic potency of the species with many small leaves may be due to their large total leaf area.

Purification and some properties of a proteinase inhibitor (DE-1) from Peltophorum africanum (weeping wattle) seed.

A proteinase inhibitor (DE-1) from the seed of Peltophorum africanum (Weeping wattle) was purified by chromatographic procedures involving Sephadex G-50, DEAE-cellulose and DEAE-Sepharose. It comprises 162 amino acid residues (molecular mass 18 000 Da) including 4 half-cystine residues and resembles the Kunitz-type proteinase inhibitors. The N-terminal primary structure of DE-1 showed homology with Kunitz soybean trypsin inhibitor and also with the proteinase inhibitors from Albizzia julibrissin and Erythrina latissima seeds. The inhibitor stoichiometrically inhibited trypsin and also alpha-chymotrypsin in the molar ratio of 1:1 and represents, therefore, a Kunitz-type double-headed proteinase inhibitor.

[Anaphylactic reaction to Ficus benjamina (weeping fig)].

Ficus benjamina (weeping fig) is a widespread indoor ornamental plant. Allergens of Ficus benjamina are a well-known cause of IgE-mediated respiratory diseases. We treated a 32-year-old female who for 10 years had suffered from perennial rhinoconjunctivitis. When dusting her 2 meter high Ficus benjamina, she developed an anaphylactic reaction which resolved without sequelae. Skin prick testing revealed a strong immediate type reaction to a Ficus extract, the serum concentration of specific IgE-antibodies to Ficus was > 100 kU/I (CAP class 6). In view of these strong test reactions and the conclusive history, no challenge tests with Ficus allergens were performed. After removal of the Ficus plants which she had owned for 17 years and after thorough cleaning of her dwelling, the patient's symptoms of perennial rhinoconjunctivitis stopped. The patient also was sensitized to, but not allergic to natural rubber latex, which occurs frequently in Ficus allergy and probably is due to cross reactivity to allergens from both sources. As Ficus benjamina is an important source of indoor allergens, it should not be used in dwellings or work places.

The weeping patient.

Weeping patients engender feelings of inadequacy in themselves and in their doctors. The creation of a warm empathy by showing understanding and by giving support provides an atmosphere for open ventilation of feelings and, ultimately, enables the patient to relax.
