Removal of intracellular waste products by hemofiltration.

Because the total amount of waste products removed by hemofiltration can be measured exactly, it was divided into two components, that removed from the extracellular compartment and that removed from the intracellular compartment, using inulin as a marker for extracellular fluid in five uremic patients treated with hemofiltration in the postdilution mode. The amount removed from the extracellular compartment as a proportion to the total amount removed from the whole body by hemofiltration was 86.5% +/- 10.6% for guanidinosuccinic acid, 69.1% +/- 15.6% for sodium, 59.4% +/- 3.3% for uric acid, 56.4% +/- 2.1% for inorganic phosphate, 45.6% +/- 5.3% for creatinine, 43.1% +/- 7.2% for potassium, 42.9% +/- 3.1% for guanidinoacetic acid, 42.5% +/- 7.5% for methylguanidine, 37.2% +/- 8.4% for chloride, 36.3% +/- 2.8% for urea, and 6.9% +/- 2.9% for glucose. These results show that extracellular substances such as sodium and guanidinosuccinic acid were removed mainly from the extracellular compartment. On the other hand, glucose was removed only from the intracellular compartment, since blood glucose level is regulated. Although uric acid, inorganic phosphate, creatinine, potassium, guanidinoacetic acid, and methylguanidine are intracellular substances, they accumulated also in the extracellular fluid in renal failure, and were removed from both compartments, intracellular as well as extracellular, by hemofiltration.

Evaluation of dehydrated restaurant food waste products as feedstuffs for finishing pigs.

Two dehydrated restaurant food waste (DFW) products were evaluated as potential feedstuffs for finishing pigs. For each product, fresh food wastes were obtained from food service operations at a resort complex in central Florida. The wastes were mostly leftover food and plate scrapings. The wastes were minced, blended with a feed stock (soy hulls and wheat flour [DFW1] or soy hulls and ground corn [DFW2]), pelleted, and dried. The dried product was then blended with additional minced fresh food wastes and dried; this process was then repeated. The final DFW products contained approximately 60% dried food wastes. The DFW1 and DFW2 products contained 11.4 and 8.4% moisture, 15.0 and 14.4% CP, 13.8 and 16.0% crude fat, 10.4 and 14.5% crude fiber, 5.8 and 4.7% ash, .63 and .64% lysine, .54 and .63% Ca, .34 and .38% P, .69 and .86% Cl, and .35 and .47% Na, respectively. Two feeding trials with 48 and 72 finishing pigs (56 to 112 kg), respectively, were conducted comparing diets without (control) or with the DFW product included at 40% of the diet (DFW1) for Trial 1 and 40 or 80% of the diet (DFW2) for Trial 2. Pigs fed the DFW diets in both trials had ADG that were similar (P > . 10) to and average gain:feed ratios that were superior (P = .06, Trial 1; P < .01; linear, Trial 2) to those for control pigs. Carcass lean content and lean quality scores were not reduced (P > . 10) by feeding pigs the DFW diets in either trial. Carcass fat became softer (P < .01; linear) with increasing amount of DFW2 in the diet in Trial 2. Thus, dehydrated restaurant food wastes have the potential to produce a nutritious feedstuff for pigs while offering a viable solid waste disposal option.

[Sanitary-hygienic regulations of the utilization of asbestos production waste in railway facilities].

The hazards of utilizing the asbestos production wastes in railway construction are analyzed. An increased risk of cancer development was observed only in groups exposed to asbestos in concentrations surpassing the maximal permissible level, as shown by mortality records. The authors come to a conclusion that the use of asbestos waste is permissible only on condition of strict adherence to sanitary regulations.

Pollution balance: a new methodology for minimizing waste production in manufacturing processes.

A new methodolgy based on a generic pollution balance equation, has been developed for minimizing waste production in manufacturing processes. A "pollution index," defined as the mass of waste produced per unit mass of a product, has been introduced to provide a quantitative measure of waste generation in a process. A waste reduction algorithm also has been developed from the pollution balance equation. This paper explains this methodology and demonstrates the applicability of the method by a case study.

[Working conditions and health-related measures in the processing of waste products of phosphorus-containing mineral fertilizers].

In the processing of the waste products of phosphorus containing fertilizer production, several major health-related factors were identified depending on the industrial site's peculiarities: unfavourable microclimate conditions (both cold and heat), relative temperature differences, noise and vibration caused by the equipment, semi-product's, additives' and finished product's dusts, fluorine- and phosphorus-containing substances' affects and poor illumination. The proposed data were used for health-related improvements in the occupational conditions.

Glucoamylase production by solid-state fermentation using rice flake manufacturing waste products as substrate.

Glucoamylase production has been investigated by solid-state fermentation of agro-industrial wastes generated during the processing of paddy to rice flakes (categorized as coarse, medium and fine waste), along with wheat bran and rice powder by a local soil isolate Aspergillus sp. HA-2. Highest enzyme production was obtained with wheat bran (264 +/- 0.64 U/gds) followed by coarse waste (211.5 +/- 1.44 U/gds) and medium waste (192.1 +/- 1.15 U/gds) using 10(6) spores/ml as inoculum at 28 +/- 2 degrees C, pH 5. A combination of wheat bran and coarse waste (1:1) gave enzyme yield as compared to wheat bran alone. Media supplementation with carbon source (0.04 g/gds) as sucrose in wheat bran and glucose in coarse and medium waste increased enzyme production to 271.2 +/- 0.92, 220.2 +/- 0.75 and 208.2 +/- 1.99 U/gds respectively. Organic nitrogen supplementation (yeast extract and peptone, 0.02 g/gds) showed a higher enzyme production compared to inorganic source. Optimum enzyme activity was observed at 55 degrees C, pH 5. Enzyme activity was enhanced in the presence of calcium whereas presence of EDTA gave reverse effect.

Toxicological investigations in the semiconductor industry: III: Studies on prenatal toxicity caused by waste products from aluminum plasma etching processes.

The prenatal toxic effects of contaminated vacuum pump oil (Sample A) and solid waste products (Samples B and C) originating from aluminum plasma etching processes in semiconductor manufacturing were investigated. Three strains of pregnant mice with different degrees of sensitivity during organogenesis (days 6-15 of gestation) were treated daily with 1000 mglkg b.w. (Sample A), 500 or 750 mg/kg b.w. (Sample B), and 250, 500, or 750 mg/kg b.w. (Sample C). On day 18 of pregnancy, the animals were killed and examined for gross changes, number and weight of live fetuses, as well as the number of postimplantation losses and malformations. Analytical data showed that the investigated wastes contained various halogenated hydrocarbons and inorganic compounds. Sample A revealed no signs of prenatal toxic action. In contrast, administration of Samples B and C caused strong prenatal toxic effects. The number of live fetuses declined in a dose--related manner, and evidence of intrauterine growth retardation was noted in fetuses that survived to day 18. The number of fetuses with malformations (only cleft palates) rose significantly in accordance with the doses and sensitivity of the strains (> 95 % of the fetuses of the most sensitive strain after 750 mg/kg; 85% after 500 mg/kg).

Fractional factorial study of hybridoma behavior. 2. Kinetics of nutrient uptake and waste production.

A fractional factorial experimental method was used to identify important variables and variable interactions which affect nutrient uptake and waste production. The variables studied include glucose, glutamine, base medium, lactate, and ammonium. Cellular glucose uptake was stimulated by glucose and glutamine and inhibited by lactate. Glucose, base medium, and glutamine all had large stimulative effects on lactate production. Glucose uptake and lactate production both exhibited Monod-type dependencies on the glucose concentration. Ammonium production was sensitive to the glucose and lactate concentrations at levels below about 8 and 20 mM, respectively. Mathematical descriptions of glucose uptake and of lactate and ammonium production were developed. These experimental results have significant implications for the optimization of hybridoma growth in bioreactors.

[Substantiation of maximum permissible concentration of nutrient yeasts obtained during utilization of waste products in cellulose-paper industry].

The contributors used the sensibilization threshold to establish MACs for the dust of the fodder yeast produced as a result of pulp and paper waste products' recycling. The product belongs to the group of substances with low toxicity. It does not produce local irritation and exhibits sensibilization properties in case of both epi- and intracutaneous introduction. The sensibilization threshold in repeated introductions of protein-containing dusts was registered at 4.1 mg/m3. In industrial conditions, the fodder yeast concentrations at the level of about 4 mg/m3 caused increased morbidity with temporary disability.

[Possibilities of using nitrogen-containing waste products for cultivation of Candida utilis. I. Communication: the use of piacryl-waste sulphuric acid].

Piacryl-waste sulphuric acid and ammonia-urea wastewaters, nitrogen-containing products of chemical industry, have been used for cultivation of Candida utilis. In our investigations, piacryl-waste sulphuric acid proved to be of special interest. The possibilities of using waste sulphuric acid during the cultivation of fodder yeast as well as in clarified and unclarified sugar beet molasses are discussed regarding the cell yields and the crude- and true protein content at various dilution rates in chemostat culture.

Degradation of nonylphenol in spiked soils and in soils treated with organic waste products.

Widespread application of sewage sludge to agricultural soils in Denmark has led to concern about the accumulation and effects of nonylphenol (NP) in the soil ecosystem. We have thus studied the degradation of NP and possible uptake in agricultural plants in greenhouse pot experiments. Different waste products including anaerobic and aerobic sludge, compost, and pig manure were incorporated into a sandy soil. In addition, NP was used to spike soil to known concentrations. Rape (Brassica napus L. cv Hyola 401) was sown in the pots and harvested after 30 d. In order to investigate the influence of plant growth on the degradation, plant-free pots were established. The concentrations in the soil were between 13 and 534 ppb dry weight. No plant uptake was observed above the detection limit at 100 ppb dry weight. When NP was added as waste to the soil, plant growth significantly stimulated the degradation. In experiments with anaerobic and aerobic sludge, respectively, 13 and 8.3% of NP remained in the soil from pots planted with rape compared with 26 and 18% in soil without plant growth. When NP was added as a spike to soil, the degradation was more complete and plant growth did not influence the degradation. Percentages of 2.2 and 1.8 were still in the soil at harvest for planted and plant-free pots, respectively. The degradation of NP was more extensive in sludge-amended soil compared with compost.

Role of metabolic waste products in the control of cell proliferation and antibody production by mouse hybridoma cells.

In order to determine the factors limiting the proliferation and productivity of mouse hybridoma cells in batch/fed-batch cultures, we tested the influence of various environmental parameters on the growth of a model cell line VO 208. We observed that, among the major metabolic waste products, ammonium ions at concentrations superior to that present in the medium at the end of a batch culture do not exert a significant toxic effect on cell growth, whereas in contrast, lactic acid is cytotoxic at concentrations reached in cultures. Feeding of fructose instead of glucose during the stationary phase of the culture markedly prolongs the life span of the culture and enhances the antibody secretion accordingly. However, we failed to observe a satisfactory proliferation pattern in cultures grown in a glucose-free fructose-supplemented medium. We also noted that vitamin supply may be limiting in fed-batch cultures. It thus appears that thorough examination of the cell metabolic needs allows the designing of a culture regimen which significantly improves cell growth and secretion.

'Stop pub': can banning of junk mail reduce waste production?

According to the new regulations on junk mail management to be adopted in France, both producers and distributors must participate in the recycling process. This case study was carried out in 2000 in four sectors in the Departement of Charente in the south west of France. This report presents the quantities of junk mail in residual waste and in separate collections. The conclusion is that the new regulations may reduce overall domestic waste production by 2-4%, with the impact on separately collected paper being some 20%.

Nutrient and waste product concentration differences in upper and lower body arteries of fetal sheep.

Well oxygenated blood returning from the placenta is preferentially shunted into the left side of the fetal heart and the ascending aorta. This results in higher oxygen saturation in arterial blood supplying the fetal upper body than in blood supplying the lower body. Since the placenta is also the site of nutrient and waste exchange, we evaluated differences in arterial concentrations of nutrients and waste products in fetal upper and lower body. Studies were carried out on ten, chronically catheterized, third trimester, fetal sheep. Blood samples, drawn simultaneously from the carotid and femoral arteries, were analyzed for glucose, oxygen saturation, oxygen content, total amino acids, lactate, urea nitrogen, and hydrogen ion concentration. Carotid arterial blood had higher levels of glucose (1.4 +/- 0.1 mg/dl (SEM); P less than 0.001), of alpha-amino nitrogen (0.4 +/- 0.1 mg/dl, equivalent to amino acid concentration difference of 2.5 mg/dl, P less than 0.025), of oxygen saturation (9.9 +/- 0.5%, P less than 0.001), and of oxygen content (1.0 +/- 0.1 ml/dl; P less than 0.001). Carotid values exceeded femoral by an average of 10% for glucose, 4% for amino nitrogen, 29% for oxygen saturation and 23% for oxygen content. Carotid arterial blood had lower urea nitrogen, (-0.5 +/- 0.2 mg/dl; P less than 0.05) and hydrogen ion (-1.1 +/- 0.1 nM/L; P less than 0.001) concentrations, but these differences averaged only 2% between vessels. Lactate concentration in the carotid and femoral arteries was the same. Fetal glucose and oxygen levels were closely related.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
