Beacon Reconstruction Attack: Reconstruction of genomes in genomic data-sharing beacons using summary statistics.

MOTIVATION: Genomic data-sharing beacon protocol, developed by the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, offers a privacy-preserving mechanism for querying genomic datasets while restricting direct data access. Despite their design, beacons remain vulnerable to privacy attacks. This study introduces a novel privacy vulnerability of the protocol: one can reconstruct large portions of the genomes of all beacon participants by only using the summary statistics reported by the protocol. RESULTS: We introduce a novel optimization-based algorithm that leverages beacon responses and SNP correlations for reconstruction. By optimizing for the SNP correlations and allele frequencies, the proposed approach achieves genome reconstruction with a substantially higher F1-score (70%) compared to baseline methods (45%) on beacons generated using individuals from the HapMap and OpenSNP datasets. We show that reconstructed genomes can be used by downstream applications such as in membership inference attacks against other beacons. Our findings reveal that beacons releasing allele frequencies substantially increase the reconstruction risk, underscoring the need for enhanced privacy-preserving mechanisms to protect genomic data. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: Our implementation is available at https://github.com/ASAP-Bilkent/Beacon-Reconstruction-Attack.

The injury profile of a large telecommunication company: a statistical summary.

Overexertion injuries have been a major concern to occupational safety and health professionals for quite some time. Over the years, these injuries have continued to increase despite ergonomic interventions to control their frequency of occurrence. It has been speculated that this increase may be due primarily to enhanced awareness and better record-keeping. Many occupational safety and health professionals also presume that overexertion injuries and occupational illnesses are confined to heavy manufacturing industries. This paper reports occupational injury and illness data from a large telecommunication industry, collected over a 7-year period. Three observations were made from the statistical summary: (1) better record keeping may be a reason behind the reported increase in injuries; workday losses decline as a result of improved ergonomic and occupational health interventions; (2) serious injuries are not just limited to heavy manufacturing industries; and (3) reduction in workday losses may not translate in injury cost savings.

Summary statistics of neonatal intensive care unit network neurobehavioral scale scores from the maternal lifestyle study: a quasinormative sample.

Descriptive statistics for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Network Neurobehavioral Scale summary scores are provided based on data from 1388 1-month-old infants in the Maternal Lifestyle Study (MLS) of prenatal drug exposure and child outcome. The multisite MLS is described, followed by tables with descriptive statistics and percentile for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Network Neurobehavioral Scale summary scores. The tables include data for the entire MLS sample as well as tables by drug exposure status, gestational age, poverty status, sex, race and ethnicity, and MLS study site. These tables can be used as quasinorms for comparison with other infants of this age.

Extracting summary statistics to perform meta-analyses of the published literature for survival endpoints.

Meta-analyses aim to provide a full and comprehensive summary of related studies which have addressed a similar question. When the studies involve time to event (survival-type) data the most appropriate statistics to use are the log hazard ratio and its variance. However, these are not always explicitly presented for each study. In this paper a number of methods of extracting estimates of these statistics in a variety of situations are presented. Use of these methods should improve the efficiency and reliability of meta-analyses of the published literature with survival-type endpoints.

Environmental justice and statistical summaries of differences in exposure distributions.

Recent regulatory action requires the assessment of environmental justice (equitable protection from the burdens of environmental hazards across sociodemographic subpopulations) in the siting of hazardous waste sites, and prioritization of environmental remediation efforts. Assessments of environmental justice require linking exposure, demographic, and health data. The geographic nature of the data makes the use of geographic information systems attractive for environmental justice assessments. Typical geographic assessments compare the composition of 'exposed' populations, while typical statistical assessments focus on differences in health outcomes between population subgroups, possibly adjusted for exposure. We outline an alternate approach based on summarized differences between exposure distributions within each population subgroup. We illustrate how such summaries provide a tool for site evaluation (e.g., defining exposure inequities resulting from locating a new potential hazard at any of a number of possible sites). In addition, we describe summaries, based on dose-response relationships, to describe risk differences imposed by the observed exposure differences. Reported toxic emissions from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania illustrate the approach.

A multivariate statistical summary of synaptic plasticity measures in rats exposed to complex, social and individual environments.

Multivariate analysis of variance, canonical discriminant analysis, factor analysis, and stepwise multiple regression were applied to 36 variables representing measures of occipital cortical synaptic, cellular, and vascular morphology in rats reared in complex, social, and individual housing environments. The results indicate differential expression of coordinated vascular and cellular metabolic processes across the three environments.

Corrected group prognostic curves and summary statistics.

A method is presented for correcting distribution function estimators for distortions in the joint distribution of covariates in the subsamples receiving different treatments. This form of standardization is useful for depicting multivariate analyses and predicting population behavior. Furthermore, it also proves useful for comparing two trials which differ in patient mix and for adjusting estimates for know imbalances in patient characteristics. Standardization though important, is not often used in clinical trials because of the complexities introduced by multiple covariates. The proposed method overcomes these difficulties in a wide class of analyses.
