Parental factors associated with regular use of dental services by second-year secondary school students in Quebec.

The aim of this study was to identify the parental factors associated with regular use of dental services by second year secondary school students in Quebec. Data were collected in 1996-97, as part of a provincial survey on the dental health of Quebec students. A stratified probabilistic sample of 1,351 students, representative at the provincial level, was obtained. Data about frequency of use of dental services, parents' socio-economic characteristics, dental insurance (private and public) and parents' utilization of dental services were selected for this study. Half of the students used dental services regularly (i.e., once every 6 months). Multivariate analysis showed that the strongest parental factors associated with regular use were (in decreasing order of importance) the date of the mother's most recent dental visit, dental insurance, household income and the date of the father's most recent dental visit. After adjustment for the parents' socio-economic characteristics and the availability of dental insurance, students with one parent (particularly the mother) who had visited the dentist within the previous year had better odds of using dental services every 6 months, as recommended by professional standards.

[Status of dental preventive efforts in Switzerland].

Regarding schools, the first endeavours of preventive dentistry based on the results of modern scientific results were made in the early fifties in the Canton of St. Gall. Great efforts have been made since then and it is impossible to keep track of all activities. At the schools it is the teachers on one hand and specialized or lay auxiliary personnel on the other who organize and perform supervised toothbrushing exercises with fluorides. In Switzerland there are now some 30 full-time positions for auxiliaries charged with preventive measures at Kindergarten or school. An estimate of the population reached by the various methods of prevention is presented. The costs of prevention are but a small fraction of the cost of conservative treatment. In the majority of the private dental offices prevention is part of the activity, but with varying intensity. As to public clinics, the preventive programm run by the Volkszahnklinik Basel is most advanced. It is important that prevention is introduced in all regions of Switzerland and that it reaches the children of all ages. The future depends strongly on the availability of auxiliary personnel working at the schools and in the dental offices.

Student satisfaction with curriculum modifications in a French dental school.

Since 1994, important modifications have been implemented in the dental curriculum in France, and an additional year has been included in the dental curriculum. The 1st year has remained unchanged; it is common to both medical and dental schools and leads to a selection procedure of 1 in 10 dental students. In the new curriculum, the dental student is engaged in a 5-year programme in dental school (years 2 to 6), as opposed to 4 years in the former programme (years 2 to 5). Basically, this new curriculum emphasises research initiation, links with medical training and offers broader clinical experience. During the academic year 1998-1999, dental schools had 2 different types of students: the 4th year students belonging to the new programme along with the 5th year students in their final year of the old curriculum. Using a specially devised questionnaire, we investigated the students' perception of their respective training, their motivation and professional plans. At the Faculty of Odontology in Lyon, the new curriculum is perceived as an increased strain by the dental students.

Dental needs and costs for patients from three social agencies.

This study indicates that for these patients studied from Johnson County, Iowa, the County Home residents have more unmet basic dental needs than do patients from Goodwill Industries or Community Action programs. The mean cost of treating the dental needs of a County home resident was found to be approximately twice that of providing dental services to the other two social service agencies. This cost differential comes about as a result of two major factors: (1) the County Home residents seen have more unmet basic dental needs, and (2) they have proportionately more unmet dental needs in specialty areas that cost more per unit of treatment (i.e. periodontics, fixed prosthodontics, and removable prosthodontics). The mean treatment cost per patient seen from each of these agencies is $851.77 for County Home residents, $407.97 for Goodwill Industry clients, and $341.21 for Community Action clients. A follow-up of this study in regard to specific circumstances that contribute to the higher incidence of dental treatment needs of the Johnson County Home residents is recommended. Such additional information would be helpful to the effective design of dental health programs for implementation at the community level.

Survey of dental needs and estimated cost of dental care of a disadvantaged university population.

At the University of Connecticut, 115 disadvantaged students received dental examinations. There was a significant need for emergency dental care. The estimated cost of dental services for this group averaged $318.62 per student. The dental needs of disadvantaged and minority as well as all university students, should be addressed and services should be provided at least for needs of acute nature.
