Submandibular sialolithiasis: a case report.

Sialolithiasis, salivary gland calculus, is a relatively uncommon condition, which may present as a painful, recurrent swelling of the affected salivary gland or duct. It can also be associated with a bacterial infection, as a result of the physical obstruction of salivary flow. This report describes the treatment of a patient with an unusually large sialolith in the submandibular duct. The patient presented with an apparent dento-alveolar abscess.

[The effect of weather on odontogenic abscesses (author's transl)].

596 acute odontogenic abscesses treated from 1974 to 1978 in the Freiburg Dental Clinic have been evaluated from the medical meteorological aspect (decimal classification). Retrospective study of coincidence led to the result that significantly more abscesses occurred on transition from anticyclonic weather conditions to cyclonic conditions with intensified advection of warm air, whereas in weather conditions with cold air advection the incidence of abscesses was distinctly reduced.

Extractions in the presence of acute infections.

Of 1,376 extractions performed in the presence of acute infection, 327 were performed in the presence of a coexisting fascial space abscess. No serious complications were observed. It seems that the relation of dental operations to the intracranial infections has been overestimated. The extraction of teeth in cases of acute suppurative infection treats the primary dentoalveolar infection and prevents the development of fascial space abscesses.
