Overcoming barriers to patient safety.

Creating a culture of patient safety is a critical goal of all patient care unit staff. An analysis of the key barriers to patient safety on a typical inpatient unit in an acute care hospital (unclear unit values), the fear of punishment for errors, the lack of systematic analysis of mistakes, the complexity of the nurses' work, and inadequate teamwork are presented. Nine practices to overcome these barriers and achieve patient safety are discussed.

[Study of the factors of health promotion at an industrial plant].

Using special survey questionnaires industrial problems were identified which directly or indirectly determine healthy lifestyle of workers at the Leningrad spinning factory "Red Thread". Difficulties, efforts and potential opportunities to solve these problems were determined with the assistance of administration and public, and also the reasons for ++shrinking of different authorities from the solution of some problems. The apparent divergences in the assessment of problems by different authorities and the necessary attribution of responsibility for their solution require special instructions for the practice of healthy lifestyle formation.

[Ergonomic evaluation of working conditions and the possibilities of their optimal improvement in small slaughterhouses].

Assessment of working conditions in small slaughter-butcher workshops was based on the measurements of microclimate, illumination intensity, noise level, physical work, load, health risk factors and of other parameters which increased the work strenuousness. The analysis showed that the working conditions were harmful, mainly due to unfavourable microclimate, too poor illumination and the magnitude of physical load which reached mid-heavy and heavy levels. Based on performed analysis of occupational hazards a list of simple technical procedures which could improve working conditions was established by the authors.

[Work hygiene and physiology in highly mechanized faces of modern coal mines of the Karaganda region].

Coal miners' intensive labour with concomitant unfavourable working conditions have changed the occupational diseases' structure. Effective antidust measures were used which contributed to a lower dust-related morbidity, but the number of cases of locomotor system and vibration related diseases increased. In recent years, a tendency has become apparent towards a general decrease of occupational traumatism, particularly, accidents with severe and lethal traumatism.

[Present-day metal-cutting tools and working conditions].

Polyfunctional machine-tools of a processing centre type are characterized by a set of hygienic advantages as compared to universal machine-tools. But low degree of mechanization and automation of some auxiliary processes, and constructional defects which decrease the ergonomic characteristics of the tools, involve labour intensity in multi-machine processing. The article specifies techniques of allowable noise level assessment, and proposes hygienic recommendations, some of which have been introduced into practice.

[Physiologic and hygienic evaluation of the work of operators of mechanical milking].

Physiologic and hygienic observational data on working conditions of operators of mechanical milking at milking sites of modern milk complexes demonstrated the impact of physical load on workers' capacity for work and health status. Sanitation measures aimed at improvement of working conditions and disease prevention of operators of mechanical milking were developed.
