The effect of location of muscle spindle on the predicted reflex control of muscle length.

The location of muscle spindles is such that the length transduced by their end-organs may not represent the total 'origin-to-insertion' length of the muscle. The tendons at least lie in series with the spindles. Using a muscle model based on biceps brachii in man, a length-control senrosystem utilizing feedback either from the total muscle length, or from the 'internal length' of the contractile central region, is modelled on the analog computer. The difference in the nature of the closed-loop regulatory system thus achieved is demonstrated. Anomalous behavior is seen, in that as the length feedback becomes effective the total system response approaches that of a simple mass/spring system in one instance.

A model for local accumulation of bone imaging radiopharmaceuticals.

A simple models, having phenomenological parameters as variables, is developed for predicting local radioactive tracer accumulation in bone. Blood delivering tracer to one gram of bone is treated as a compartment separate from the remainder of the circulation in order to observe the effects produced by variations in both bone flow and barrier permeability. Kinetic curves derived by analog computer were obtained for normal and perturbed values of the parameters for F-18 and Ca-47 in a segment of rabbit bone. Apparent confirmation of the predicted influence of decreased blood flow on F-18 deposition was obtained by measuring bone uptake following constriction of the right femoral artery in five rabbits. Such models may prove useful in explaining variations in uptake for different agents, in selecting imaging times, and in correlating uptake patterns with disease.

An intrathoracic solenoid drive system for chronic left ventricular bypass.

The performance of an implantable Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS), utilizing an advanced solenoid energy converter, has been extensively studied in vivo. For optimum system efficiency, reliability and responsiveness, the energy converter and blood pump are integrated into a single compact unit, which is implanted intrathoracically in an 80 Kg calf. The MK19 LVAS is battery operated and controlled by a miniature analog computer and is completely self-regulating. The maximum hemodynamic power provided by this circulatory assist system is 4 watts with cardiac outputs up to 10 L/min and a total system efficiency of 30%. LVAS function has been studied in a series of 19 calf experiments progressing through acute, model and chronic evaluations. Development of the implantation protocols and hemodynamic characterization were achieved in a series of 8 acute experiments. Long-term studies were conducted for periods up to 43 days in a series, including 2 control experiments using non-functional models and 9 functional LVAS chronic experiments. Aortic, left ventricular and left atrial pressures, pulmonary artery flow and pump outflow were monitored with chronically implanted transducers. A dedicated minicomputer provided real-time hemodynamic analysis and continuous surveillance of physiologic and LVAS parameters. In acute studies and in the immediate post-operative period of chronic experiments, synchronous LVAS operation reduced peak LV pressures to 30 mm Hg with cardiac outputs of 5 to 7 L/min. In chronic studies, with recovery of normal LV function, long-term synchronous operation was maintained, without capture of the total cardiac output and with significantly reduced ventricular unloading.

An interface between several cameras and two computers, using differential analog transmission.

A system has been built to allow up to four scintillation cameras to be connected in parallel with two computers, yet provide for selection of individual pairs of camera/computer combinations with the exclusion of unwanted connections. Since the distances involved were relatively long, signal drivers were used to transmit the analog signals in a differential mode over multiple twin-paired lines rather than coaxial cable. By transmitting the signals differentially, any noise induced on the signal was subtracted at the receiver. The principal features of this system, which has been installed in two institutions, are described. A problem that occurred in connection with one camera is presented (also its solution), with a suggestion concerning parameters to be assessed at the time of system acceptance.

Analog-digital molecular cell computer.

The living cell is controlled by a molecular stochastic computer of parallel-successive action. MCC may be equivalent to the universal computer. MCC operates with molecule-words (DNA, RNA, proteins) according to the programme recorded in DNA and RNA. Operations are produced by molecular devices (RNA- and DNA-polymerases, ligases, proteinases and so on). Molecular devices operating with molecule-words are recorded on molecules themselves, and they are read off by ribosomes. Therefore the programme of the reorganization of the programme itself may be recorded on the molecule-words. MCC operates with molecular words having definite addresses. The words and the operators collide by Brownian movement and combine if the molecular surface of address segment is complementary and properly oriented. It is possible to reproduce not only the programmes but also the operators of MCC. The molecular computer operates with word-molecules according to the programme, recorded in DNA, with the aim of predicting an outer situation in the next time-moment and selecting of a correct answer by synthesis of suitable proteins and other substances and also by macroscopic motion. Each step of directed calculation is needed of the consumption of minimally necessary portion of free energy and search is due to the Brownian movement without free energy loss. Cyclic nucleotides are intraneuron membrane potential controlling systems which can be described as molecular diffusional analog computers, well fitted to solve mathematical physics equations if there are high frequency generators and regulators of cyclic nucleotides sources and sinks. It is suggested that molecular proton channels in an electric field are such generators of 10(11)-10(12) Hz. Biophysics cannot use the ordinary laws of physics and must take into account the influence on the phenomena to be studied, not only of a measurement but also of a calculation process in the real device predicting the future.

Fourier analysis of effects of varying pressure waveforms in electrical lung analogs.

Six voltage waveforms were devised to simulate pressure curves of varying configuration for use in artificial ventilation. These waveforms were subjected to Fourier analysis and terms of the resulting series applied to a simple two-branch resistive-capacitive circuit intended to represent a lung analog using computer simulation. Current (analogous to flow) and charge (analogous to volume) in each branch could be graphically displayed. Differences among the waveforms in such attributes as efficiency, inspiratory work, volume introduced per unit of mean pressure applied, and relative volume distribution between the two branches could be demonstrated. All waveforms were capable of delivering a predetermined volume to the circuit with adjustment of their peak pressure (voltage). It was not possible to designate any of the waveforms as "superior" since advantage in one attribute, such as efficiency, was accompanied by deficiencies in other characteristics such as uneven volume distribution. Despite obvious severe limitations on physiological interpretations of such data, Fourier analysis of respiratory waveforms appears to be a useful teaching, illustrative, and exploratory method.

Design and implementation of multipattern generators in analog VLSI.

In recent years, computational biologists have shown through simulation that small neural networks with fixed connectivity are capable of producing multiple output rhythms in response to transient inputs. It is believed that such networks may play a key role in certain biological behaviors such as dynamic gait control. In this paper, we present a novel method for designing continuous-time recurrent neural networks (CTRNNs) that contain multiple embedded limit cycles, and we show that it is possible to switch the networks between these embedded limit cycles with simple transient inputs. We also describe the design and testing of a fully integrated four-neuron CTRNN chip that is used to implement the neural network pattern generators. We provide two example multipattern generators and show that the measured waveforms from the chip agree well with numerical simulations.
