The principle of the latex agglutination technique was applied on the serodiagnosis of Chagas' disease. The latex particles coated with antigen from Trypanosoma cruzi are agglutinated by antibodies against T. cruzi in the serum of patients suffering thereof. In 11600 comparative determinations worked out mainly in a number of South American laboratories, the sensitivity of this test was compared with xenodiagnosis, CF, IFT and IHA. The latex Chagas test shows a mean coincidence of 90% with xenodiagnosis, 88% with CF, 75% with IFT, and 83% with IHA. The results indicate that the test is a useful new tool for the serodiagnosis of Chagas' disease. Also the data from CF, IFT and IHA were compared with each other. The latex Chagas test is sensitive even in the early stage of the disease. Also the specificity of the test was evaluated in other parasitic, bacterial and general diseases.

Immunoabsorption profiles were determined for Rickettsia rickettsii antigens used in four confirmatory tests for detection of antibodies to Rocky Mountain spotted fever. A human serum reactive in the four tests was absorbed with each test antigen and then reexamined by all four tests. The results indicated that the whole organism and complement-fixation antigen absorbed the whole array of antibodies to R. rickettsii, whereas erythrocyte-sensitizing substance coated on latex or erythrocytes did not. With erythrocyte-sensitizing substance coated on latex there was a decrease in titer when tested by the latex, indirect hemagglutination, and complement fixation tests but none when tested by the microimmunofluorescence test. With erythrocyte-sensitizing substance coated on sheep erythrocytes there was a decrease in titer when tested by indirect hemagglutination or complement fixation but none when tested by latex or microimmunofluorescence. These findings confirm that erythrocyte-sensitizing substance contains more than a single antigenic substance and plays a major role in the complement fixation test and a minor role in the microimmunofluorescence test.

Radioimmunoassay (RIA), immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) and latex agglutination (L-HHA) were compared in the detection of hepatitis B antigen in sera from 494 mental patients. Positivity was observed in 39 subjects (7.9%) with RIA, 14 (2.8%) with IEP, and 8 (1.6%) with L-HHA. The dilution titres noted with RIA were many times and significantly higher than those obtained with the other two methods. Antigen was again detected in over 50% of those subjects on whom it was possible to repeat the tests one year later. The advantages of RIA are stressed.
