Localization of intravenously injected tumor cells in the rat mesentery after intraperitoneal administration of chemotactic stimuli.

The formation of metastases can be induced at sites injected with chemotactic factors in animals with circulating, chemotactically responsive tumor cells. This study was done to examine the possibilities that this phenomenon is due to enhanced tumor localization or stimulation of tumor growth. Walker carcinosarcoma cells labelled with 125I-iododeoxyuridine were injected into the tail veins of rats subsequently given intraperitoneal injections of chemotactic factor. 24 h later there was a 2.7- to 3.5-fold increase in the number of labelled cells in the mesenteries of animals given chemotactic factors compared to controls (p less than 0.001). The distribution of cells in other viscera was not affected by the injection. No effects were observed on the kinetics of tumor growth in vitro when cultures were supplemented with these chemotactic factors or with peritoneal lavage fluids from animals previously given intraperitoneal injections of chemotactic factor. Thus, in this model, the formation of metastases can be related to the arrest of circulating tumor cells in response to local chemotactic stimuli but the promotion of tumor growth has not been demonstrated.

[Primary leiomyosarcoma of the mesentery].

A case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the mesentery is described. Only seven other cases have been reported in the literature, which means that this was an accidental finding. The histological features of the case are illustrated. It is suggested that this tumour originates in the muscle cells of the mesenteric vessels. The view that surgical management is incapable of improving the fatal prognosis is expressed.

[Unusual cause of acute abdomen in childhood. Cystic fibrolymphangioma of the mesentery].

Cystic fibrolymphangioma of the mesentery as an unusual cause of acute abdomen in infancy is described. This form is one of the many mesenteric cysts whose pathogenesis has not yet been established. Preoperative diagnosis of such cysts is very difficult, and there are very few cases in which a close study has been possible in the light of clinical suspicion. Intraoperative diagnosis is the most likely, therefore, though there are cases - such as that reported here - in which surgery is indicated to remedy the occlusion caused by the cyst, and not because a swelling has been noted on clinical examination.

Regional enteritis: the rubbery mesentery.

The classical features of regional enteritis--a thickened edematous mesentery and edema of the submucosa--have been demonstrated by computed tomography. Future experience may confirm its value in separating inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the small bowel.

[Traumatic tearing of the mesentery: immediate or deferred emergency surgery].

We have considered a 1 year first-aid survey and focused a 6 checked mesentery vascular traumatic tearing cases. We have valued some hypotheses on pathogenic mechanism assumptions about these vascular injuries in abdomen trauma. Among these, we have focused our attention on the relationship between visceral stretching from alimentary bolus and abdominal vascular trauma. During diagnosis, we valued the importance of abdominal sounding, of echotomography and Computerized Tomography; the first one seems to be remarkable for reliability and quickness of accomplishment. In one case we have performed laparoscopic diagnostic-therapeutic approach. We suggested some standards for surgery choice related to injury amount. Monitoring is particularly important for those patients it can performed by invasive or image means seen that the unacknowledged endo-abdominal injury increases mortality by about 5-65%.

Intracapsular asexual proliferation of Mesocestoides sp. tetrathyridia in the gastrointestinal tract and mesenteries of the prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis viridis).

Nonproliferous and proliferous tetrathyridia (Mesocestoides sp.) have been reported from natural and experimental infections in reptiles and rodents. Multiple tetrathyridia (1+) in individual capsules (host-derived) were observed for both types of tetrathyridia and in both types of animals. To determine whether proliferous tetrathyridia in this genus could replicate in host capsules of the prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis viridis), 11 snakes were inoculated and maintained in 2 environmental chambers (25 C and 30 C). One snake at each temperature was removed at 4-wk intervals and killed. Sections of the gastrointestinal tract and adjacent mesenteries were histologically examined. The increase in the numbers of tetrathyridia per capsule was significant at both 25 C (P = 0.007) and 30 C (P < 0.001). Identification of 7 intracapsular tetrathyridia with binary scoleces served as collaborative evidence. This paper presents the first significant evidence for asexual replication of the proliferous tetrathyridia (Mesocestoides sp.) in a reptilian host.

Lymphangioma of the mesentery and small intestine: a case report showing a solid tumor with a cystic component on US and CT.

We encountered a patient with multiple lymphangiomas of the mesentery and small intestine. Ultrasonography and computed tomography showed a mesenteric tumor composed of a solid component with a small cystic part. This unusual appearance made the differential diagnosis between lymphangioma and other intra-abdominal solid tumors difficult.

[A case of lipoma in the small intestinal mesentery diagnosed as an ovarian tumor].

A rare case is described of primary benign tumour of small intestine mesentery misdiagnosed as ovarian tumour. The diagnostic difficulties are presented resulting from small number or total absence of symptoms characteristic of this type of disease and from the demonstrated in gynaecological examination connection of the lesion with the genitals. The proper diagnosis is established usually during surgical operation, the extent of which depends on the vascularization of the tumour and on its connection with intestinal wall.

[A quantitative observation of erythrocyte flow dynamics in microvessels of isolated rabbit mesentery].

Erythrocyte flow dynamics in microvessels was quantitatively observed with an isolated rabbit mesentery. The flow resistance in the microvascular bed was analyzed with respect to the thickness of a cell-free layer along the inner vessel wall and the suspension viscosity of erythrocytes (in terms of hematocrit and erythrocyte deformability). The thickness of cell-free layer increased with the increase in the inner diameter of microvessels, by lowering the hematocrit, and by increasing the erythrocyte velocity, but it was constant in capillary region. The thickness decreased by decreasing the erythrocyte deformability with diamide, while it increased by accelerating the erythrocyte aggregation with dextran. The flow resistance in the microvascular bed was not simply related to the thickness of a cell-free layer, but it was well correlated to the viscosity of erythrocyte suspension. In the flow pattern of erythrocytes, the maximum inner diameter of microvessel required to induce parachute-like deformation decreased by decreasing the erythrocyte deformability. Moreover, the flow of erythrocytes became inhomogeneous and intermittent by accelerating the erythrocyte aggregation.

[Leiomyosarcoma of ileocecal mesentery--a case report].

We report a case of leiomyosarcoma whose origin was near the root of ileocecal mesentery and extended into the retroperitoneum. Preoperative imaging examination, including CT, MRI and angiography clearly displayed its origin and retroperitoneal extension. These results contributed to treatment planning.

Jejunal atresia with absent mesentery and a helical ileum.

Of 59 infants with jejunoileal atresia, seven presented with absence of mesentery, the main superior mesenteric artery ceasing to exist beyond the origin of the right colic or ileocolic artery, and a helical ileum. This distinctive form of jejunal atresia has been recognized with increasing frequency in recent years. Distal to the atresia, the small bowel receives its blood supply retrograde from an artery derived from the ileocolic or right colic arcades, and the ileum coils around its nutrient artery in an "apple peel" or "Christmas tree" deformity. The first three patients in this report died. The lastion, but they recovered as their malabsorption gradually disappeared. The treatment includes resection of the dilated bowel, as in other atresias. Resection of part of the distal bowel may be required for additional atresias or for poor vascularity with questionable viability. Postoperative malabsorption generally requires intravenous hyperalimentation.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the mesentery--a rare cause of abdominal pain. Case report with a review of literature.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a tumor most frequently occurring in lower and upper extremities and in retroperitoneum. This paper presents the extremely rare case of a 55-year-old male patient with a MFH of storiform pleomorphic subtype originating from the mesentery. Sonography, computed tomography as well as endoscopy and ERCP did not reveal the diagnosis. Finally the tumor was diagnosed by laparoscopy with biopsy and histological examination. Two months after diagnosis of the tumor the patient died of bronchopneumony and heart failure contracted during a generalisation of MFH.

The oscillation from pacinian corpuscles to external stimuli in cat mesentery.

Single Pacinian corpuscles isolated from cat mesentery elicited fast-adapting responses and/or oscillation to displacement and vibratory stimuli at temperatures of 24-43 degrees C. The displacement threshold of oscillation increased by decreasing the temperature of the room or of the corpuscles to below 26 degrees C. Further cooling made the corpuscles elicit only fast-adapting responses to displacement stimuli of identical strength. When a single Pacinian corpuscle was stimulated by the same displacement the impulse patterns depended on the temperature of the experimental plate on which the corpuscle was situated. It is therefore suggested that, in temperatures higher than 28 degrees C and lower than 43 degrees C, constant displacement stimuli or vibratory stimuli (10-0.01 Hz) induced oscillation of the receptor potential from the Pacinian corpuscles.

[Primary solid tumors of the mesentery].

The interest for the primary solid tumors of the mesentery (TSPM) is justified by the difficulties of preoperative diagnosis and surgical treatment of these unusual lesions. We analyzed 68 TSPM operated in the Department of General Surgery of Fundeni Hospital between 1960-1993. In the study were included only the lymphoma presented as mesenteric masses (n = 17); the enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes were excluded. The most common malignant tumor was the fibroma (n = 8) and lipoma (n = 10). In the resection of mesenteric tumors exposure of the superior mesenteric vessels is important. The relation between tumoral and superior mesenteric vessels is the necessary criterion of resectability: in 41 cases from 43 unresectable lesions the reason of unresectability was the invasion of the superior mesenteric vein and artery; in only two cases the reason was the presence of liver metastases. The resectability was not influenced by the multiplicity of the lesions: in all cases with multiple mesenteric tumors (6 patients) the resection was performed. The distant metastases of TSPM are rare; on the contrary, the local invasion is common.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the mesentery.

We report a solitary fibrous tumor of the abdominal cavityt that presented as a encapsulated mass attached to the mesentery in a 33-yr-old man. Histologically, the lesion showed a disorganized arrangement of spindle cells in a collagenous background and prominent vascular channels of varying size. Tumor cells showed immunohistochemical reactivity for vimentin only. Cytokeratins and CD34 were negative. This report further extends the anatomic range of solitary fibrous tumor, a neoplasm that must be included in the differential diagnosis of well-defined abdominal masses. The behavior of this mesenteric solitary fibrous tumor has been benign.

[The biomicroscopic evaluation of the blood microcirculatory bed in the mesentery of the small intestine during experimental perftoran infusion under normovolemia].

Dynamics of biomicroscopic state of hemomicrocirculatory bed (HMCB) of small intestinal mesentery was studied in go both sexes albino outbred rats in conditions of intravenous administration of 1.0 ml perfuoram (PF) with simultaneous control of the experiment by intravenous isotonic solution administration. Biomicroscopy was performed 30 minutes, 3, 6 and 24 hours later. 30 minutes after the PF administration bloodflow reduction in afferent vessels, elongation of construction period of resistant vessels and 18% decrease of vessels were demonstrated. Precapillary diameter decreased on 23% with respect to control with isotonic solution. Tortuosity of precapillaries and decrease of functioning capillaries number. 3 hours after the PF infusion blood flow turned more slow, signs of adhesion between leukocytes and postcapillary venules lumenal surface appeared and perivascular infiltrate had formed. Diameter of alducent vessels reduced in comparison with control and went lugher against the 30-minutes research stage. On the whole bloodflow in resistant vessels turns homogeneous. 6 hours after PF infusion homogeneous bloodflow could be seen. Number of arteriolar vasomotions grew up to control and made 14 in a minute. Venular diameter was close to control. Biomicroscopy of HMCB 24 hours after infusion did not reveal essential differences compared to with isotonic solution administered.

[Metachronous intra-abdominal fibromatosis of the gastro-spleno-colonic ligament and the mesentery: histopathogenetic interpretation. Report of a case].

The paper reports a case of intra-abdominal fibromatosis with an initial localisation in the gastro-spleno-colic ligament followed by a metachronous localisation in the mesentery. Both localisations preceded the appearance of sigmoidorectal polyps and ovarian polycystosis. The authors discuss the biological problems related to the pathology and tend to interpret it as a dys-reactive disease of connective tissue in a genetically predisposed, subject.

[State of the nerve cells of the cat spinal ganglia transplanted into the mesentery].

The survival of the mature differentiated neurons from the spinal ganglia under the conditions of autotransplantation into the colon mesentery of the cat was studied in chronic experiments. For two months, one-third of the neurons from the peripheral parts of the grafts survived and, as the normal ones, had a pseudounipolar form. However, their initial glomeruli had excessive overgrowth in the form of perivascular plexus, in its formation both the main axonal segment with its fine lateral branches and the finest offshoots from the neuronal bodies take part. These regenerating nerve fibres together with growth cones make terminals in the form of buttons, rings and loops. Such terminal structures in the capsular plexus around the neurons and in numerous Nageotte's cells present receptor terminals which are abundantly produced under the condition of the spinal ganglia transplantation.
