Seasonal variations of selected biomarkers in sand gobies Pomatoschistus minutus from the Guadalquivir Estuary, Southwest Spain.

Sand gobies, Pomatoschistus minutus, were collected monthly from September 2002 to August 2003 at a station situated 8 km upstream from the mouth of the Guadalquivir estuary (southwest Spain). Physical parameters of the water and selected biomarkers of organic pollution were recorded in the fish to discuss its potential as a sentinel species in estuaries. The biomarkers selected were the activities of catalase (CAT), 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the liver and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and lipid peroxidation (LP) in the head. The results showed an increase in total protein synthesis in late spring and early summer coinciding with the reproductive period as well as the release of fresh water from a dam situated 110 km upstream. During the same period, a significant depletion of hepatic GST and head AChE but higher LP levels in this tissue suggest exposure to pesticides such as those applied to crops established along the course of the river and reaching the estuary mostly when the freshwater discharges occur. Changes in CAT and EROD activities fluctuated randomly and were not noted as seasonally dependent. Biomarker fluctuations in sand goby are discussed as normal seasonal variations, but other variables-such as potential local pollution inputs-cannot be disregarded.

Prevalence and intensity of blood and intestinal parasites in a field population of a Mediterranean lizard, Lacerta lepida.

We describe the blood and intestinal parasites in the Ocellated lizard, Lacerta lepida, examining the factors that determine the prevalence and intensity of infection of haemogregarines, and the prevalence of coccidia and nematodes. In relation to haemogregarines, no juveniles were detected as being infected, whereas 71.7 % of adults were infected. The prevalence of infection was positively related to the size of the adults. There were no differences between seasons or sexes in the prevalence or intensity of infection in adults. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of infection by nematodes between ages or sexes, nor in relation to the size of adult lizards, but adult lizards excreting coccidian oocysts tend to be smaller. During the mating period, reproductive activities lead to a decrease in the body condition. However, neither the intensity of haemogregarine's infection nor the prevalence of intestinal parasites was related to the lizards' body condition.

Effects of sedimentation on macroalgae: species-specific responses are related to reproductive traits.

Although increases in sedimentation have been proposed to interfere with benthic communities in many coastal areas worldwide, few experimental studies have investigated the effect of sedimentation on community composition and assessed species-specific responses. In a field experiment on a rocky shore on the Swedish east coast (northern Baltic Proper) we confirmed the hypotheses that ambient sedimentation influences macroalgal abundance and community composition, and that species-specific responses to sedimentation correlate with reproductive strategies. We followed the establishment and development of macroalgal vegetation on artificial substrates at 8-m and 15-m depth for 4.5 years while manipulating the depositional environment by regularly removing accumulated sediment. Sediment removal significantly favoured macroalgal development and vegetation cover. Responses of macroalgal species to the sediment treatments were clearly species-specific; for example, the ephemeral green algae (Cladophora glomerata and Enteromorpha spp.) were highly tolerant to sedimentation while belt-forming perennial brown algae (Fucus vesiculosus and Sphacelaria arctica) were not. Accordingly, multivariate analyses (redundancy analysis) showed that variance in species abundances were significantly correlated to sediment conditions. The effect of sediment removal was higher at 15-m than at 8-m depth and some species' distributions seemed limited in depth by the present sediment load (e.g. F. vesiculosus). Vegetative propagation was common in the study area and many species mainly depended on dispersal by fragmentation. Generally, species with an extended reproductive period, either by long continuous spore release (C. glomerata and Enteromorpha spp.) or vegetative dispersal by fragmentation (e.g. Furcellaria lumbricalis and Polysiphonia fucoides), were most tolerant to sedimentation. This paper demonstrates long-term effects of sediment deposition on the development of a macroalgal community over several growing seasons. The results indicate that variation in sediment loads is an important constraint for species' local distributions and abundances, and affects the composition of sublittoral rocky-shore macroalgal communities.

Copulation behavior within one-male groups of wild Rhinopithecus roxellana in the Qinling Mountains of China.

This study was conducted using focal animal sampling on the west ridge group of the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) located in the Zhouzhi National Nature Reserve on the north slope of the Qinling Mountains, from 8 July 2003 to 24 May 2004. The difference in the average frequency of copulations for each focal male for each month was significant (F=3.068, P=0.016, one-way ANOVA test) with the majority of copulations occurring between September and November. Duration of intromission ranged from 2 to 39 s, with a mean of 16.0+/-0.4 s. Females initiated 627 courtship attempts (96.2%), while males only initiated 3.8%. Both adult females (72.8%) and sub-adult females (27.2%) were involved in sexual interference acts. Females who gave birth in 2004 performed more sexual interference acts than would be expected by chance in the reproductive period of 2003 (X2=13.73>X2(0.005,2), df=2, P<0.005). Male response to female interference was equally divided into "solicitor mounting" and "interrupter mounting". The resident males of one-male units were not observed to mount both the solicitor and the interrupter or mount neither following female solicitation interruptions. Three post-conception copulations were also observed in this study. These results suggest a skewed sexual competition, with multiple females competing for a single male, which was shown by courtship attempts and female interference.

Temporal variation in the production of four secondary metabolites in a colonial ascidian.

The ecological and applied importance of ascidian secondary metabolites is well reported, but little is known about temporal variation in the production of these compounds. Here, we examined seasonal variation in the production of the four main pyridoacridine alkaloids (shermilamine B, kuanoniamine D, and their deacetylated forms) of the purple morph of the ascidian Cystodytes sp. Five replicate samples were taken monthly from July 2004 to February 2006, and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Our results showed a high degree of intercolony variability in secondary metabolite concentration and a lack of statistically significant seasonal variation in the production of the four compounds. Minimum values, however, were consistently recorded over the studied years in late summer, after the reproductive period. These minima may be attributable to sexual exhaustion and seasonally varying biotic interactions or abiotic parameters.

Calcium and bone metabolism during pregnancy and lactation.

Pregnancy and lactation both place significant demands on the mother to provide sufficient calcium (among other minerals and nutrients) to the fetus and neonate. Despite facing similar demands for calcium during pregnancy and lactation, the maternal adaptations differ significantly between these two reproductive periods. Women lose 300 to 400 mg of calcium daily through breast milk, and this calcium demand is met by a 5-10% loss of skeletal mineral content during 6 months of exclusive lactation. Most importantly, the lost mineral is fully restored within a few months of weaning, such that women who have breastfed do not have a long-term deficit in skeletal mineral content. This article will review our present understanding of the adaptations in mineral metabolism that occur during pregnancy and lactation, and will focus on recent evidence that the breast itself plays a central role in regulating the adaptations during lactation.

Effects of oestrogens on erythrocyte enzyme efflux in normal men and women.

In the normal female range for serum creatine kinase, the large diminutions associated with the reproductive period and with pregnancy are apparently related to oestrogen production. Specimens of heparinised blood from healthy men and women were stressed by chilling, and showed the predictably large efflux of erythrocyte aldolase and lactate dehydrogenase into plasma. In aliquots of the same specimens simultaneously stressed in the same way, previous substitution of the natural plasma with pregnant plasma rich in oestrogens gave a marked significant reduction in the efflux of both enzymes in women, but not in men. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Seasonal changes in plasma prostaglandin F2 alpha and sex hormones in the male water frog, Rana esculenta.

Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha), progesterone, androgens (testosterone + dihydrotestosterone), and 17 beta-estradiol were measured in the plasma of male frogs, Rana esculenta, by radioimmunoassays. Plasma concentrations of PGF2 alpha were higher from October to December and peaked in March (prereproduction) and in June (postreproduction). Plasma progesterone levels were relatively low but showed an increase from October to December and in June. Plasma androgen titres rapidly increased in early spring, started to fall during the reproductive period (May), and were lowest in July. 17 beta-Estradiol levels peaked in March and in June. The annual profile of the plasma PGF2 alpha levels was positively correlated with those of progesterone and androgens, while it was not correlated to the estradiol plasma pattern, except in March and June. The increase in plasma PGF2 alpha in the autumn may be related to gonadal recovery. The simultaneous increases in PGF2 alpha and 17 beta-estradiol, both in March and June, suggest a PGF2 alpha-dependent estradiol synthesis, a possibility also supported by the increased plasma 17 beta-estradiol previously observed in PGF2 alpha-treated postreproductive females. The effects of captivity and castration on plasma PGF2 alpha concentrations were also studied during the annual cycle. Captivity was associated with a reduced PGF2 alpha titre, while castration did not modify prostaglandin synthesis, which may point to an extragonadal source of plasma PGF2 alpha.

Cortical slow potentials in verbal and spatial tasks--the effect of material, visual hemifield and performing hand.

Fifteen right-handed students voluntarily initiated the tachistoscopic presentation of visual stimuli containing either verbal (abstract words) or spatial (stereogeometric figures) material. Subjects had to reproduce stimulus material which had been presented either in their right or their left hemifield of vision by writing or drawing, either with their right or their left hand. Material-specific effects were found during the reproduction period: amplitudes of the performance-related negative potential shifts were larger in parietal and occipital recordings (P4, O1, and O2) when drawing as compared to writing. The opposite was true in frontal and left central leads (F3, F4, and C3) where writing was associated with larger negative amplitudes than drawing. Although subjects were informed about the nature of the forthcoming stimulus before voluntarily initiating the task, material-specific effects were missing in the preparation period. The performing hand had an influence on potentials in central leads, whereas hemifield of vision had no effect on preparation- and performance-related slow potential shifts.

The effects of pregnancy and lactation on dietary self-selection in the rat.

Total food intake and intake of discrete dietary components, carbohydrate, fats, and protein, throughout pregnancy and lactation were measured in the albino rat, with virginal rats acting as controls. The dietary components were isocaloric and presented in a self-selection situation. Although the reproductive subjects ate more carbohydrate, protein, and total food than controls during the lactation phase, their intake did not significantly exceed that of controls during pregnancy. In addition, reproductive but not virginal animals changed patterns of selection over the reproductive periods. They consumed more total food during gestation and lactation, and more carbohydrate and protein during lactation.

Effects of cocaine on dietary self-selection during pregnancy and lactation in the rat.

Previously, we have shown that patterns of food selection are altered by pregnancy and lactation in rats. Reproductive animals increase total food intake during gestation and lactation, and select more carbohydrate and protein during lactation than virginal controls. In other self-selection studies, female rats administered cocaine compensate for decreases in carbohydrate and fat but not protein intake, resulting in a potential protein deficiency. The present study was designed to test the combined effects of cocaine and reproductive period on food intake. Cocaine was administered daily (PO) to 18-h food-deprived rats during the second and third week of gestation and the first week of lactation. Immediately following drug administration, each animal had free access to isocaloric carbohydrate, protein, and fat in a dietary self-selection situation. Intake of each component was measured at 30 min, 60 min, 2 h, and 6 h following the drug treatment. The results of this study indicate that cocaine administration during gestation and lactation disrupts normal patterns of food intake. Altered patterns of food intake may be responsible for some of the deleterious effects of maternal cocaine use on offspring.

Evidence of a sex related difference of transcortin level in adult ducks.

Corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) serum level as evaluated by either equilibrium dialysis or gel filtration was found to be higher in male than in female adult ducks during the reproductive period. Castration did not modify CBG concentrations in females, whereas in males it induced a significant decreased in CBG, to the level observed in intact or castrated females. Testosterone injections administrated to castrated females increased CBG to the level of adult intact males. Finally it was found that testosterone stimulated CBG production in ducks without altering thyroxine levels.

Immune control of mammalian aging: a T-cell model.

A competent immune response appears to play an important role in retarding aging. On the other hand, the aged immune system is assumed to accelerate the general aging process. In order to approach the underlying mechanism of this paradoxical immune response, the process of clonal deletion in the thymus is addressed under the aspect of aging. It is assumed that T-cell deletion in the thymus brings about a control of cell differentiation in the organism. For proper functioning, this control is suggested to be directed, in the sense of a feedback mechanism, primarily to thymic stromal cells involved in the process of clonal deletion. At the expense of a thymus atrophy, the control system can retard aging up into the reproductive period of life. With the progress of thymic involution, however, the control is predetermined to undergo a breakdown and, in consequence, through loss of self-tolerance it speeds up the whole aging process.

Effect of yohimbine on the reproductive behavior of the male Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus.

The effect of yohimbine, an alpha 2-adrenergic blocker, on the reproductive activity of 12-year-old male, captive Nile crocodiles was tested on 18 animals equally divided into 3 ponds. In each pond, there were 6 males and 30 females. In the first group, six of six males received yohimbine capsules of 30 mg, twice a day, for 1 week. In the second group, two males of a group of six were administered a similar dose of yohimbine. Another group of six males in a separate pond were used as a control group. The yohimbine treatment had a significant (p less than 0.05) effect on the frequency of headslap display (the main behavioral pattern of reproductive activity) in all treated animals but did not result in a significant increase in copulation frequency. In the two treated groups, the reproductive period was prolonged by 3 weeks, 8-11 weeks. We found a significant increase in the fertility percentage of eggs laid by females in the male-treated groups (30.5% in control group females, 34.1% in the partly treated, and 39.0% in the pond where all six males were treated), even though no increase in mating frequencies was noted. This might be due to more successful copulations. During the treatment period, the daily activity peak, when the male's headslap performance was the most frequent, was shifted from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the control to 4:00-5:00 p.m. in the treated group. This effect caused females to enter the water earlier than in the control group.

Stable human T-lymphotropic virus type I carrier rates for 7 years among a teenaged blood donor cohort of 1986 in Kumamoto, Japan.

The human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) carrier rates for blood donors in Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan for 8 years, 1986-1993, are currently available. The data show that 16-19-year-olds in 1986 and 20-29-year-olds in 1993 represent nearly the same cohort, because the median age in both groups is 24.5 years in 1993. Therefore, comparison of the HTLV-I positive rate for the two groups gives an estimate of the change in the rate over 7 years within the cohort. In males, 265 of 22,143 donors (1.20%) were seropositive for HTLV-I among 16-19-year-olds in 1986, and 214 were seropositive among 20,076 (1.07%) donors in 20-29-year-olds in 1993. In females, 203 were seropositive among 20,677 (0.98%) donors in 16-19-year-olds in 1986, and there 154 were seropositive among 18,660 (0.83%) donors in 20-29-year-olds in 1993. Thus, the seropositive rates declined in both sexes. However, the average annual rate of immigration to Kumamoto Prefecture was 2.37%. If seropositive rates for 20-29-year-olds in 1993 are adjusted for the dilution effect due to immigration (under the assumption that all immigrants were HTLV-I negative), the adjusted carrier rate for males is 1.26% and that for females is 0.98%. The adjusted carrier rates for both sexes are almost the same as those for 16-19-year-olds in 1986. This indicates that horizontal transmission was negligible for those in the cohort who were in their early reproductive period. Using all 8 year carrier rates for 16-19-year-olds and 20-29-year-olds, chronological changes of 20-29-year-olds, in the near future was estimated. The best goodness of fit model indicated that the HTLV-I carrier rate will decline exponentially, and that the rate will decrease by 50% approximately every 10 years for both sexes. It is probable that in recent years south-west Japan has lost the conditions that are favorable for HTLV-I endemicity and the virus will be virtually non-endemic within a few generations.

Effect of SO2 on the reproduction of pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum, and the impact of SO2 and aphids on the growth and yield of peas.

Pea aphids feeding from birth to maturity on pea plants (Pisum sativum) exposed to SO(2) concentrations of 50 nl litre(-1) or 80 nl litre(-1) showed a significant 19% increase in the rate of nymph production during the reproductive period, compared to control aphids feeding on plants in charcoal-filtered air. The higher nymph production resulted in a mean 4.6% increase in the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm). In longer term glasshouse fumigation experiments pea aphid populations were, on average, 1.8 times greater on pea plants in ambient air plus 45 nl litre(-1) SO(2) than in ambient air alone. Aphid infestation in ambient air caused a 42% reduction in pea yield and affected most plant parameters adversely. Ambient air plus SO(2) had no direct effect on yield, but, in combination with aphid infestation, a further 10% reduction in yield was recorded.

Serum gamma-globulin concentration in different stages of sexual activity in females of common vole, Microtus arvalis, Pall.

1. In young and adult females of common vole low gamma-globulin levels at the greatest individual variability in the estrous phase were observed. 2. In natural population when the nonactive females were probably not under hormonal suppression (northern Poland, late summer) they had significantly higher level of gamma-globulins than pregnant, lactating and post partum ones. 3. It is suggested that decreases of gamma-globulin concentration may be an important physiological consequences of hormonal events and influence the viability of females in natural population during reproduction period.

Identification of an epididymal immunorelated protein family: sequential appearance under testosterone stimulation.

The lizard has a seasonal sexual cycle, during which the epididymis produces large amounts of proteins that mix with spermatozoa during the reproductive period. Through one-dimensional electrophoresis we identified among these proteins a band of major soluble Mr 19,000 proteins. In two-dimensional electrophoresis the Mr 19,000 protein molecules separated into four pHi groups ranging from 3.7 to 8.7. An immunoserum prepared against the most acidic fraction recognized all four protein groups. Immuno-electrophoresis confirmed that these proteins have similar immunological characteristics. The androgen dependence of each group was demonstrated in vitro with testosterone stimulation of tissue from castrated animals. The groups appear sequentially as a function of culture growth time.
