A new method for evaluating mucolytic expectorant activity and its application. II. Application to two proteolytic enzymes, serratiopeptidase and seaprose.

Using our new method described in a preceding paper, in vivo effects of two proteolytic enzymes such as serratiopeptidase (SER) and seaprose (SAP) on sputa collected from bronchitis rabbits were examined. SER (20 mg/kg) and SAP (30 mg/kg) significantly reduced the viscosity of sputum (P less than 0.05) at the 1-3-h periods and the 4-6-h periods, respectively, after intraduodenal administration. 50 mg/kg of SER also significantly decreased not only viscosity (P less than 0.001) but also amount of freeze-dried substance (P less than 0.05) of sputum at the 1-3-h periods, but SAP did not affect the amount of dried substance. Both enzymes significantly increased the volume of sputum, probably as the result of liquefaction. Thus, mucolytic expectorant activity of both enzymes can be demonstrated first by the reduction in viscosity and next of the increase in volume of sputa. However, the decrease in amount of freeze-dried substance is not always in accord with the reduction viscosity.

[Biotechnical increase of litter size in early pregnant sows using steroid application. 1. The effect of a single application of hydroxyprogesterone capronate on fertility response in ovulation-synchronized gilts and old sows].

One single intramuscular injection of hydropyrogesteroncapronate was given in an experiment to 199 gilts and 239 old sows on the 13th or 15th or 17th day after insemination to test various fertility performance parameters. Doses were 50 mg, 75 mg or 100 mg. Positive effects on litter size were established from the majority of nine compared experimental variants. The number of live-born piglets was increased up to two. Several groups of gilts had higher mean litter weights. More studies are necessary to prepare an adequate therapeutic regime by which to reduce loss of embryos in swine.

Application of the hemoglobin alkaline denaturation test to determine the fetal origin of blood: applicability to funipuncture.

In funipuncture, fetal blood is collected by passing a needle transabdominally into an umbilical vessel under ultrasound guidance. The objective of this study was to develop an accurate, inexpensive test that immediately indicates the source of the blood during the umbilical sampling procedure, ie, before the needle is withdrawn. To distinguish fetal from adult blood, we used a modified version of the Apt test, which is based on the different alkaline denaturation properties of adult hemoglobin and fetal hemoglobin. We collected 18 blood samples from adult volunteers and 22 umbilical cord samples from deliveries occurring between 25-42 weeks' gestation. The samples were tested for character and time of color change upon addition of increasing concentrations of NaOH. We found 0.2N NaOH to be the ideal concentration to add to hemolyzed blood samples for a reliable determination of blood origin. All of the hemolysates tested in blinded trials using 0.2N NaOH were correctly identified as fetal or adult. The increase in adult hemoglobin due to the increase in gestational age alters the rate of color change, but the difference was not clinically important because it did not alter the efficacy of the alkaline denaturation test.

The Hemopump as a left ventricular assist device in pediatric applications: initial Canadian applications.

Three children aged 11 months, and eight and nine years were supported with a Hemopump as a potentially life saving measure for circulatory failure. Left ventricular assist time ranged from 10 to 32 h. None of the three patients could be successfully weaned from the device because of complications of bleeding, arrhythmia or neurological insult. Despite poor outcomes, each patient demonstrated important hemodynamic stabilization with the device. The Hemopump is suggested as a potentially life saving treatment modality for selected pediatric patients who have critical left ventricular failure.

[On the application of electric stimulation currents in operations. Concept of a clinically applicable device (author's transl)].

With the use of high voltage electric currents in patients who initally have been anaesthetised, the anaesthesiologist faces new aspects. For this reason basic principles of physical medicine and medical engineering with respect to special problems are described. The majority of impulses current generators used so far do not even comply with the first principal requirement of any therapy namely knowledge of the dose of the agent applied. A system for electric currents crossing the body is outlined, which is characterized by constant current and isovoltage-free outlets in connection with a special ECG-amplifier and a control pattern. This apparatus for the first time guarantees maximal safety in clinical use. First animal experiments demonstrate the possibility of the risk if this method is applied in a inexperienced manner: in all animals ventricular fibrillation could be achieved when the electrodes were used in a position near the heart and there appeared to occur nonspecific reactions when current was directed through the brain (ear acupuncture)
