A medical qigong methodology for early intervention in autism spectrum disorder: a case series.

A medical Qigong protocol was applied to a group of eight autistic children under the age of six. The children received medical Qigong massage twice weekly from the physician and daily Qigong massage from the parents for a five-week period, followed by daily parent massage for an additional four weeks. Standardized tests showed a decrease in autistic behaviors and increase in language development in all the children, as well as improvement in motor skills, sensory function and general health.

Saccadic movements using eye-tracking technology in individuals with autism spectrum disorders: pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To verify differences in the visual scanning strategies between pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) and controls when they are observing social and non-social pictures. METHOD: PDD group (PDDG) comprised by 10 non-retarded subjects (age from 4 to 41) and age-matched control group (CG). Nine social pictures with human beings (including two pictures of cat mask), and 3 nonsocial pictures of objects were presented for 5 seconds. Saccadic movements and fixation were recorded with equipment EyeGaze (LC Technologies Inc.). RESULTS: PDDG (mean=292.73, SE=67.62) presented longer duration of saccadic movements for social pictures compared to CG (mean=136.06, SE=14.01) (p=0.04). The CG showed a higher number of fixations in the picture 7 (a women using a cat mask, with the eyes erased) (CG: mean=3.40; PDDG: mean=1.80; p=0.007). CONCLUSION: The results suggest differences in strategies that PDD explore human picture. Moreover, these strategies seem not to be affected by the lack of expected part of the face (the eyes).

[Management of children with autism spectrum disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by qualitative deficits in communication, social skills and a restrictive repertoire of interests and behaviors. Recent studies suggest that they may represent one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders. METHOD: Treatment of core deficits of ASD are primarily speech and language, behavioral and educational interventions. Clinical management of ASD requires a multidisciplinary approach to identify behaviors that could interfere with the individual s ability to benefit from those interventions. Medications, such as neuroleptics, antiepileptic drugs, SSRI s, neurostimulants and others have been used to target specific behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Further research is much needed if medications are eventually to have a greater role in the treatment of core ASD symptoms. Recent attempts at neurosurgical interventions cannot be justified by our present level of knowledge

Microbiology and immunology of autism spectrum disorders.

Both generic and environmental factors are likely to contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders. Even in heritable disorders of high penetrance, variability in timing of onset or severity of disease indicate a role for modifying principles. Investigation in animal models of the consequences of interactions between host response genes and microbes, toxins, and other environmental agents in a temporal context may elucidate the pathophysiology of a wide spectrum of chronic diseases. Here we review the evidence that infectious and immune factors may contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders, describe an animal model of neurodevelopmental disorders based upon viral infection, identify processes by which neural circuitry may be compromised, and outline plans for translational research in animal models and prospective human birth cohorts.
