[Pharmacology of a new sleep-inducer, a 1H-1,2,4-triazolyl benzophenone derivative, 450191-S (VIII). Examination and determination of metabolites in human plasma and urine].

Oral administration of 450191-S to humans at 4 mg/man led to the formation of the same plasma metabolites as those found in animals; i.e., M-1, M-2, M-A, M-3 and M-4. Unlike in animals, M-4 was the major metabolite in human plasma for 6 hr after dosing. 450191-S was not found in human plasma after administration of the commonly used dose of 450191-S (1-2 mg/man). The major human urinary metabolite was also M-4, and 44-68% of the dose was excreted as M-4 into 0-24 hr urine. The unchanged 450191-S excreted into the urine was scarcely detectable. Minor metabolites also seemed to be present in the urine, such as the 4OHM-3 conjugate, M-1 and its conjugate, M-2 and its conjugate, M-A and its conjugate, and M-3 and its conjugate. However, all of them together came to not more than 1% of the dose.

Structure determination of metabolites of rilmazafone, a 1H-1,2,4-triazolyl benzophenone derivative in monkey urine.

1. The metabolism of a new hypnotic 5-[(2-aminoacetamido)methyl]- 1-[4-chloro-2-(o-chlorobenzoyl)phenyl]-N,N-dimethyl-1H-1,2,4-tr iaz ole-3-carboxamide hydrochloride dihydrate (rilmazafone hydrochloride) was studies in female cynomolgus monkeys. 2. The structures of ten urinary metabolites were determined by mass spectrometry, and confirmed by comparison with synthetic authentic compounds. 3. Pathways of metabolism are postulated indicating that rilmazafone is desglycylated and cyclized to M-1, demethylated successively to M-2 and M-3, then hydrolysed to M-4, or hydroxylated at the 4-position of benzodiazepine ring or the p-position of the o-chlorophenyl group.

N-hydroxymethyl metabolites of 450191-S, a 1H-1,2,4,-triazolyl benzophenone derivative, in dog plasma.

In a metabolic experiment of 5-[(2-aminoacetamido)methyl]-1-[4-chloro-2-(o-chlorobenzoyl)phenyl ]-N, N-dimethyl-1H-1,2,4,-triazole-3-carboxamide hydrochloride dihydrate (450191-S) in dogs, two new metabolites 8-chloro-6-(o-chlorophenyl)-N-hydroxymethyl-4H-1,2,4-triazolo [1,5-a] [1,4]benzodiazepine-2-carboxamide (M-A) and 8-chloro-6-(o-chlorophenyl)-N-hydroxymethyl-N-methyl-4H-1,2,4-triazolo [1,5-a] [1,4]benzodiazepine-2-carboxamide (M-D) in plasma were found in addition to 8-chloro-6-(o-chlorophenyl)-N,N-dimethyl-4H-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a] [1,4] benzodiazepine-2-carboxamide (M-1), 8-chloro-6-(o-chlorophenyl)-N-methyl-4H-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a] [1,4] benzodiazepine-2-carboxamide (M-2), 8-chloro-6-(o-chlorophenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazolo-[1,5-a] [1,4] benzodiazepine-2-carboxamide (M-3), and 8-chloro-6-(o-chlorophenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a] [1,4] benzodiazepine-2-carboxylic acid (M-4). The structures of N-hydroxymethyl metabolites were elucidated mainly by mass spectrometry. The structures were confirmed by synthesizing the authentic compounds and comparing the mass spectra.

[Pharmacological studies of a new sleep-inducer, 1H-1,2,4-triazolyl benzophenone derivatives (450191-S) (I). Behavioral analysis].

The behavioral effects of 450191-S and its metabolites were investigated in mice, rats, cats and rhesus monkeys, and they were compared with those of related benzodiazepines (BDZ) such as diazepam and nitrazepam. Oral administration of 450191-S consistently caused sedation without excitability in mice and rats, and it was only 1/2 to 1/266 as potent as the BDZ in producing motor incoordination as assessed by traction, rotarod performance and inclined screen tests in mice, induced much less ataxia in cats and monkeys, and inhibited respiration in anesthetized cats. The locomotor activities of mice and rats measured by Animex and the open field test were not affected by 450191-S, but rearing and preening decreased with 450191-S as with the BDZ. 450191-S was equipotent with nitrazepam and 2 to 6 times more potent than diazepam and estazolam in potentiating chlorprothixene-induced hypnosis and thiopental-Na-induced anesthesia. These effects were not different with successive 14-day administration of 450191-S. Anti-pentylenetetrazol, picrotoxin and bicuculline convulsions of 450191-S had the same potency as nitrazepam, but caused much less anti-electroshock convulsion than the BDZ. 450191-S had potent antianxiety activity as observed by anti-aggressive and anti-conflict activities and had almost the same effect as diazepam on operant behavior. The metabolites M-1, M-2, M-A and M-3 showed approximately the same potency as 450191-S in inducing anesthetic potentiation and antianxiety activity, but they were much more potent in causing disturbance of the somatic functions. These results indicate that 450191-S possesses inhibitory effects on the central nervous system, including a potent sleep-inducing effect, and is characterized by markedly weak muscle relaxant activity and motor incoordination.

[Pharmacology of a 1H-1, 2, 4-triazolyl benzophenone derivative (450191-S), a new sleep-inducer (III). Behavioral study on interactions of 450191-S and other drugs in mice].

Interactions between 450191-S and other representative drugs which might be clinically used with 450191-S were behaviorally investigated in mice, and compared with the cases of nitrazepam, estazolam and triazolam. The potencies of 450191-S and nitrazepam in preventing pentetrazol convulsions were markedly decreased by aminopyrine, whereas that of estazolam was remarkably increased by phenytoin. Administration of nitrazepam with other drugs, except aminopyrine, or of estazolam together with haloperidol exhibited an anticonvulsive pattern different from the case of dosing with either drug alone. Only the effect of triazolam was not influenced by any drugs used. The potency of haloperidol against apomorphine-induced climbing behavior was significantly reduced by nitrazepam, and the pattern of the haloperidol effect was changed by treatment together with 450191-S or estazolam. However, triazolam had no influence on the effect of haloperidol. The antagonistic activity of imipramine to reserpine-induced hypothermia was slightly decreased by 450191-S, estazolam and triazolam, but little affected by nitrazepam. In the protection from maximal electroshock convulsions (MEC), the potency of phenytoin was significantly decreased by 450191-S and triazolam. Moreover, the anti-MES pattern of phenytoin was altered by nitrazepam. Estazolam exerted no significant influence on the effect of phenytoin. Analgesic activities of morphine and/or aminopyrine were potentiated by pretreatment with sleep-inducers, but not 450191-S. Thus, judging from the potency and stability of the anti-pentetrazol effect, 450191-S seems to be inferior to triazolam, but superior to nitrazepam and estazolam. Also, 450191-S may be differentiated from other sleep-inducers by the fact that only 450191-S did not potentiate the analgesic activities of morphine and aminopyrine.

[Pharmacological studies of a new sleep-inducer, 1H-1,2,4-triazolyl benzophenone derivative (450191-S) (V). General pharmacological activities].

General pharmacological activities of 450191-S were studied in various species of animals and compared with those of reference benzodiazepines (BDZ). 450191-S at doses of 10 mg/kg slightly decreased (-5 degrees C) the rectal temperature of rabbits. 450191-S decreased respiratory and heart rates in anesthetized cats, but the effects were less than those of diazepam or triazolam. 450191-S increased respiratory and heart rates in conscious dogs, but had no effect on the blood pressure, electrocardiogram and autonomic nervous system in cats and dogs. The drug displayed a slight spasmolytic activity in the small intestine of guinea pigs and a slight inhibitory effect on isolated non-pregnant and pregnant uteri of rats. These effects were less than those of diazepam or nitrazepam. Below doses of 25 mg/kg, 450191-S did not affect urinary volume and electrolyte excretions in rats. It also decreased brain norepinephrine (NE) turnover rates in rats, but decreased NE and dopamine turnover rates in mice. These effects of 450191-S were less than those of nitrazepam. 450191-S was found to be minimally irritating to the ocular mucosa in rabbits and did not irritate the stomach and small intestine in rats. These effects were also compared with those of active metabolites of 450191-S, M-1, M-2, M-A, M-3 and M-4, and the superiority of the mother compound over its metabolites was clarified.

[Pharmacological studies on drug dependence. (III): Intravenous self-administration of some CNS-affecting drugs and a new sleep-inducer, 1H-1, 2, 4-triazolyl benzophenone derivative (450191-S), in rats].

The present study examined comparative self-administration of some typical CNS-affecting drugs with a new sleep-inducer, 450191-S, in rats, Most animals self-administered both methamphetamine and cocaine in an extremely stable and invariable fashion with cycles of alternating responding and non-responding periods during the day and at night. Response frequency increased in proportion to a fixed-ratio value. An initial increase in response rate followed by cessation of the responding was observed during extinction. Sixty-five percent of the rats tested self-administered morphine in a relatively variable and less stable fashion. Total daily morphine intake was directly related to the unit dose. Eighty-three percent of the rats self-administered pentazocine. Fifty and sixty-four percent of the rats maintained self-administration of phenobarbital and diazepam, respectively, with higher intake at night than during the day. Responding persisted at a low rate for several days during extinction. Abrupt withdrawal of 450191-S caused the same slight weight loss and moderate decrease in food intake as those seen with diazepam and nitrazepam, and cross-physical dependence between 450191-S and diazepam was found. Self-administration of 450191-S at 0.5-2.5 mg/kg/infusion was observed with 2 out of 11 rats, which was much less than that found with diazepam. These results suggest that 450191-S possesses little, if any, drug dependence liability of the tranquilizer type.

Alkali and alkaline-earth metal ketyl complexes: isolation, structural diversity, and hydrogenation/protonation reactions

The use of hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA) as a stabilizing ligand allowed successful isolation of a series of structurally characterizable alkali metal and calcium ketyl complexes. Reaction of lithium and sodium with one equivalent of fluorenone and reaction of sodium with one equivalent of benzophenone in THF, followed by addition of two equivalents of HMPA, yielded the corresponding ketyl complexes 1, 2, and 11, respectively, as microketyl-bridged dimers. If one equivalent of HMPA was used in the reaction of sodium with fluorenone, a further aggregated complex, the mu3-ketyl-bridged tetramer 3, was isolated, whereas analogous reaction of benzophenone with sodium afforded the trimeric ketyl complex 13, rather than a simple benzophenone analogue of 3. In the reaction of potassium with fluorenone, the use of two equivalents of HMPA gave the tetramer 4, rather than a dimeric complex analogous to 1 or 2. Compared to the tetrameric sodium complex 3, there is an extra HMPA ligand that bridges two of the four K atoms in 4. When 0.5 equiv of HMPA was used in the above reaction, complex 5, a THF-bridged analogue of 4, was isolated. In the absence of HMPA, the reaction of sodium with an excess of fluorenone yielded the tetrameric ketyl complex 6, in which two of the four Na atoms are each terminally coordinated by a fluorenone ligand, and the other two Na atoms are coordinated by a THF ligand. Two bridging THF ligands are also observed in 6. Reaction of 1,2-bis(biphenyl-2,2'-diyl)ethane-1,2-diol (7) with two equivalents of LiN(SiMe3)2 or NaN(SiMe3)2 in the presence of four equivalents of HMPA easily afforded 1 or 2, respectively, via C-C bond cleavage of a 1,2-diolate intermediate. The reaction of calcium with two equivalents of fluorenone or benzophenone in the presence of HMPA gave the corresponding complexes that bear two independent ketyl ligands per metal ion. In the presence of 3 or four equivalents of HMPA, the fluorenone ketyl complex was isolated in a six-coordinate octahedral form (10), while the benzophenone ketyl complex was obtained as a five-coordinate trigonal bipyramid (13). The radical carbon atoms in both benzophenone ketyl and fluorenone ketyl complexes are still in an sp2-hybrid state. However, in contrast with the planar configuration of the whole fluorenone ketyl unit, the radical carbon atom in a benzophenone ketyl species is not coplanar with any of the phenyl groups; this explains why benzophenone ketyl is more reactive than fluorenone ketyl. Hydrolysis of 2 or 11 with 2N HCI yielded the corresponding pinacol-coupling product, while treatment of 2 or 11 with 2-propanol, followed by hydrolysis, gave the pairs fluorenone and fluorenol or benzophenone and benzhydrol, respectively. A possible mechanism for these reactions is proposed.

Photocontact dermatitis from ketoprofen and tiaprofenic acid: cross-reactivity study in 12 consecutive patients.

The arylpropionic acid derivatives (APADs) ketoprofen and tiaprofenic acid can provoke photoallergic dermatitis. Possible cross-reactivity between APADs is of importance in patients using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Because of the similarities in chemical structures, we investigated patients with photoallergy to ketoprofen or tiaprofenic acid, in order to study cross-reactivity between APADs and a possible pattern of cross-reactivity between benzophenone-containing molecules, so as to determine the molecular basis of photoallergy to ketoprofen or tiaprofenic acid. 10 patients with photoallergy to topical ketoprofen, 2 with photoallergy to oral tiaprofenic acid, and 15 control subjects with no history of contact dermatitis from APADs, nor from benzophenone-containing molecules, were photopatch tested in triplicate with ketoprofen, tiaprofenic acid, other APADs (alminoprofen, fenoprofen, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen and naproxen), benzophenone-containing molecules (fenofibrate, oxybenzone, sulisobenzone), and unsubstituted benzophenone. 1 set was irradiated with UVA light, 1 with solar-simulated irradiation and 1 dark control. Tests were read at 2, 3 and 4 days. Patients reacted to both ketoprofen and tiaprofenic acid (12/12), fenofibrate (8/12), oxybenzone (3/12) and unsubstituted benzophenone (11/12), but not to other APADs, nor to sulisobenzone. Tests remained negative in control patients. Photoallergy is due to the benzophenone moiety of ketoprofen, or to the very similar thiophene-phenylketone of tiaprofenic acid, but not to their arylpropionic function. This induces cross-reactivity to fenofibrate and oxybenzone but not to APADs without a benzophenone moiety, which may therefore probably be used in such patients. Unsubstituted benzophenone should be added to standard phototesting series.

Designing systems for a multiple use of light signals.

The photochemical and photophysical behavior of two dendrimers consisting of a benzophenone core and branches that contain dimethoxybenzene units has been investigated. Such dendrimers can undergo a variety of photochemical and photophysical processes, namely: 1) quenching of the fluorescence and phosphorescence of the dimethoxybenzene units by energy transfer to the benzophenone core (antenna effect), 2) direct and sensitized phosphorescence (and delayed fluorescence) of the benzophenone core, 3) hydrogen abstraction by the triplet excited state of the benzophenone core from solvent molecules, 4) intramolecular hydrogen abstraction by the triplet excited state of the benzophenone core from the dendrimer branches, 5) quenching of the phosphorescence and hydrogen abstraction reaction of the benzophenone core by energy transfer to terbium ions and dioxygen; 6) conversion of the UV light absorbed by the dendrimer branches into visible (Tb3+) or near infrared (O2) emission via the sequence of processes 1) and 5). The results obtained emphasize the great potential of suitably designed dendrimers for a multiple use of light signals.

Novel laser-induced luminescence resulting from benzophenone/O-propylated p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene complexes. A diffuse reflectance study.

Laser-induced room temperature luminescence of air-equilibrated benzophenone/O-propylated p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene solid powdered samples revealed the existence of a novel emission, in contrast with benzophenone/p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene complexes, where only benzophenone emits. This novel emission was identified as phosphorescence of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione, which is formed as the result of an hydrogen atom abstraction reaction of the triplet excited benzophenone from the propoxy substituents of the calixarene. Room temperature phosphorescence was obtained in air-equilibrated samples in all propylated hosts. The decay times of the benzophenone emission vary greatly with the degree of propylation, the shortest lifetimes being obtained in the tri- and tetrapropylated calixarenes. Triplet-triplet absorption of benzophenone was detected in all cases, and is the predominant absorption in the p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene case. where an endo-calix complex is formed. Benzophenone ketyl radical formation occurs with the O-propylated p-tert-butylcalix[4]arenes hosts, suggesting a different type of host/guest molecular arrangement. Diffuse reflectance laser flash photolysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques provided complementary information, the former about transient species and the latter regarding the final products formed after light absorption. Product analysis and identification clearly show that the two main degradation photoproducts following laser excitation in the propylated substrates are 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione and 2-hydroxybenzophenone, although several other minor photodegradation products were identified. A detailed mechanistic analysis is proposed. While the solution photochemistry of benzophenone is dominated by the hydrogen abstraction reaction from suitable hydrogen donors, in these solid powdered samples, the alpha-cleavage reaction also plays an important role. This finding occurs even with one single laser pulse which lasts only a few nanoseconds, and is apparently related to the fact that scattered radiation exists, due to multiple internal reflections possibly trapping light within non-absorbing microcrystals in the sample, and is detected until at least 20 micros after the laser pulse. This could explain how photoproducts thus formed could also be excited with only one laser pulse.

Photoallergic contact dermatitis is uncommon.

BACKGROUND: Despite the enormous increase in sunscreen use, allergic contact (AC) and photoallergic (PA) reactions to ultraviolet (UV) filters are considered rare. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the data from 2715 patients who underwent photopatch testing at St John's Institute of Dermatology during the period 1983-98. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all positive photopatch test episodes was undertaken with the results retrieved from the environmental dermatology database and further verified with the original archived patch test documentation for each individual patient. RESULTS: In 111 patients with positive reactions (4.1%), there were 155 AC or PA reactions to allergens in the photopatch test series. Eighty PA reactions were observed in 62 (2.3%) patients (32 men and 30 women, age range 28-75 years), with UV filters accounting for 52 positive reactions (65%), drugs 16 (20%), musk ambrette 11 (14%) and the antiseptic trichlorocarbanilide one (1%). The most common UV filter photoallergen was benzophenone-3 with 14 positive results, followed by benzophenone-10 (n = 9), isopropyl dibenzoylmethane (n = 6), p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) (n = 5), octyl dimethyl PABA (n = 5), butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (n = 4), isoamyl methoxycinnamate (n = 2), ethyl methoxycinnamate (n = 2), octyl methoxycinnamate (n = 2), amyl dimethyl PABA (n = 2) and phenylbenzimidazole sulphonic acid (n = 1). A similar number of AC reactions to UV filters was detected in this study. Thus 49 patients (1.8%) had a total of 75 reactions: 51 due to UV filters and 24 as a result of exposure to fragrances and therapeutic agents. Benzophenone-10 accounted for 13 AC reactions and benzophenone-3 for eight reactions. Twenty-two patients had a PA reaction alone, whereas 19 patients had chronic actinic dermatitis and 15 patients polymorphic light eruption (PLE) in addition. Thus, 34 of the 62 patients (55%) had a preceding underlying photodermatosis. CONCLUSIONS: These results show a low yield of positive photopatch tests. Thus, despite the large increase in the use of UV filters over the last decade, the development of PA reactions remains rare. Furthermore, most of the common UV filter photoallergens identified in this study, including PABA, amyl dimethyl PABA and benzophenone-10, are now rarely used in sunscreen manufacture, while isopropyl dibenzoylmethane was voluntarily removed from the market in 1993. Currently, benzophenone-3 is the commonest contact photoallergen still in widespread use. In contrast, the UVB filter octyl methoxycinnamate, used in a number of sunscreens, produced only two positive PA reactions in 12 years of testing. Nevertheless, although these reactions are extremely rare, patients with photodermatoses such as PLE and chronic actinic dermatitis do represent a group of patients at increased risk of developing photoallergy. Further photopatch test series should be regularly reviewed and updated, as the relevance of individual photoallergens changes over time. Currently, there is no evidence that PA reactions represent a common clinical problem.

Identification of rat urinary and fecal metabolites of a new herbicide, pyribenzoxim.

Rats were treated with pyribenzoxim (O-[2,6-bis[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)oxy]benzoyl]oxime), a new herbicide, to investigate the related metabolites in urine and feces. Metabolites were identified using LC/MS (electrospray ionization) and GC/MS (electron impact ionization) following the relatively simple and rapid extraction and purification procedures. Three metabolites were identified in urine either from oral gavage or intravenous (iv) injection. They were benzophenone oxime (BO), benzophenone oxime glucuronide (BOG), and 2-hydroxy-6-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy)benzoic acid (HDB). Benzophenone oxime was present in larger quantity than BOG and HDB in urine from oral treatment, while the case was opposite in urine from iv treatment. Glucuronide conjugate was confirmed unambiguously by enzyme hydrolysis. 2,6-Bis(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy)benzoic acid (KIH-2023) and benzophenone were identified in feces. Benzophenone was confirmed by GC/MS and HPLC/DAD since LC/MS could not produce an ESI spectrum. On the basis of the results obtained, a metabolic map of pyribenzoxim is proposed.

Sulphydryl groups in the template-primer-binding domain of murine leukaemia virus reverse transcriptase. Identification and functional analysis of cysteine-90.

Treatment of murine leukaemia virus reverse transcriptase with benzophenone 4-maleimide inactivates DNA polymerase activity, but has no effect on the RNAase H function. Kinetic measurements indicated that benzophenone 4-maleimide is a competitive inhibitor with respect to template-primer binding, but is non-competitive with respect to dNTP binding. Enzyme modified with benzophenone 4-maleimide cannot bind template-primer or primer alone, as judged by u.v.-mediated cross-linking of radiolabelled substrates. Of the eight cysteine residues in murine leukaemia virus reverse transcriptase, only two were modified by benzophenone 4-maleimide, which were identified as Cys-90 and Cys-310 by comparative tryptic-peptide mapping and amino acid composition analysis. Inclusion of template-primer or primer alone in the modification mixture protected only Cys-90 from modification by benzophenone 4-maleimide. To investigate the role of Cys-90 in detail, we converted it to alanine by site-directed mutagenesis. The mutant enzyme, however, exhibited no loss either of DNA polymerase or of RNAase H activity. These results indicate that Cys-90 is located in a domain of murine leukaemia virus reverse transcriptase that binds template-primer, but may not have a direct role in the enzymic function of the enzyme. Ala-90 mutant murine leukaemia virus reverse transcriptase is at least 10-fold more susceptible to heat inactivation than is the wild-type enzyme, which suggests that Cys-90 in murine leukaemia virus reverse transcriptase may play a role in maintaining structural integrity.

Fading of artificial hair color and its prevention by photofilters.

Fading of artificial hair color has been investigated by simulating actual usage conditions through exposure to artificial radiation in a weatherometer, with 0.35 mW/(m(2) nm) at 340 nm, for 16 to 48 hours, and by periodical washing. Hair color was produced by using commercial two-part, permanent hair dyes with light auburn, medium auburn, and dark auburn shades. Formulations based on red couplers, such as 4-amino-2-hydroxytoluene and 1-naphtol, as well as primary intermediates, such as 1-hydroxyethyl-4,5-diamino pyrazole sulfate, were employed. Results indicate that the extent of fading, as measured by the total color change parameter, dE, is greatest for colored hair subjected to both irradiation and shampooing, and significantly smaller for hair undergoing only irradiation or washing. Color loss has been also found to be dependent upon the hair type employed, with colored natural white and bleached hair undergoing much greater change than colored brown hair. It has been also shown that hair color based on pyrazole intermediates displayed the deepest fading as a result of shampooing (dE approximately 4-6 after ten shampooings) and irradiation/shampooing (dE approximately 14-16 after 32 hours of light exposure and four shampooings). The contribution of UV light (UVB + UVA) to the artificial hair-color loss was found experimentally to be dependent upon the irradiation dose and varied from 63% at 16 hours of irradiation time to 27% at 48 hours of light exposure. The theoretical extent of photoprotection by a formulation was assessed by calculating the percentage of UV light it attenuates in the wavelength range from 290 nm to 400 nm. The results indicate that UVB photofilters, such as octyl methoxy cinnamate, absorb less than 25% of the total UV irradiation at concentrations as high as 30 mg/(g hair). UVA absorbers were found to be more effective, with benzophenone-3 and benzophenone-4 absorbing about 40% of UV at the same concentration. Corresponding experimental data were in reasonable agreement with the theoretical predictions. The data are also presented for color protection with treatments containing two photo-absorbers: benzophenone-3-ZnO; benzophenone-4-ZnO; octyl methoxy cinnamate-ZnO; and dimethylpabaimidopropyl laurdimonium tosylate-benzophenone-3.

Luminescence lifetime distributions analysis in heterogeneous systems by the use of Excel's Solver.

A detailed study of the luminescence decay curves of pyrene included within p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene cavities and benzophenone into silicalite channels is reported. A new methodology for a lifetime distribution analysis of the decay curve of probes onto heterogeneous surfaces is presented, which allows for asymmetric distributions and uses Voigt profiles (Gaussian and Lorentzian mixture) instead of pure Gaussian or Lorentzian distributions. Our approach uses a very simple and widely available tool for fitting, the Microsoft Excel Solver. In the case of the pyrene/tert-butylcalix[4]arene sample, the room temperature luminescence detected in the microsecond time scale was not only the phosphorescence of pyrene but also monomer delayed fluorescence, crystal phosphorescence, and excimer delayed fluorescence. In the benzophenone/silicalite case, three emissive forms of benzophenone could be assigned, one of benzophenone included into the silicalite circular zigzag channels, another for emplacement into the elliptical straight channels and finally when benzophenone is placed at the crossing points of those silicalite channels, where smaller spatial restrictions for benzophenone exist.
