Toxic doses of phenylbutazone (10 mg/kg of body weight) were administered to 10 ponies once daily for 14 days. Clinical signs of toxicosis similar to those seen in other species included CNS depression, anorexia, oral ulcers, and soft feces. Six ponies died in 7 to 20 days; 1 pony was euthanatized during an acute abdominal crisis; and 3 ponies survived the study. At necropsy, the major lesions were oral and gastrointestinal ulcerations and renal changes.

The structure and possible functions of respiratory secretions are reviewed. In the equine, goblet (mucus producing) cells are the main source but little information is available on the volume or composition of equine respiratory secretions. Airway mucus has complex and incompletely understood physical characteristics which can be partially assessed by a wide range of in vitro and biological techniques. The complex relationship between mucus structure and its propulsion by the airway cilia are discussed, both in health and with pulmonary disease. Mucokinesis in the horse has been assessed visually, by bronchoscopically observing intratracheal markers and also by the use of radiographic and radioactive markers. All techniques indicate a tracheal mucus velocity of approximately 20 mm/min. A large number of mucokinetic agents have been claimed therapeutically to increase mucokinesis, using a range of mechanisms. These include mucus diluents, surface acting agents, mucolytics, bronchomucotropic agents, ciliary augmentors and broncho-dilators. A critical review of the literature shows that the bronchodilator clenbuterol is the most effective mucokinetic agent assessed to date in the equine.

In most cells trans-activating NF-kappaB induces many inflammatory proteins as well as its own inhibitor, IkappaB-alpha, thus assuring a transient response upon stimulation. However, NF-kappaB-dependent inflammatory gene expression is persistent in asthmatic bronchi, even after allergen eviction. In the present report we used bronchial brushing samples (BBSs) from heaves-affected horses (a spontaneous model of asthma) to elucidate the mechanisms by which NF-kappaB activity is maintained in asthmatic airways. NF-kappaB activity was high in granulocytic and nongranulocytic BBS cells. However, NF-kappaB activity highly correlated to granulocyte percentage and was only abrogated after granulocytic death in cultured BBSs. Before granulocytic death, NF-kappaB activity was suppressed by simultaneous addition of neutralizing anti-IL-1beta and anti-TNF-alpha Abs to the medium of cultured BBSs. Surprisingly, IkappaB-beta, whose expression is not regulated by NF-kappaB, unlike IkappaB-alpha, was the most prominent NF-kappaB inhibitor found in BBSs. The amounts of IkappaB-beta were low in BBSs obtained from diseased horses, but drastically increased after addition of the neutralizing anti-IL-1beta and anti-TNF-alpha Abs. These results indicate that sustained NF-kappaB activation in asthmatic bronchi is driven by granulocytes and is mediated by IL-1beta and TNF-alpha. Moreover, an imbalance between high levels of IL-1beta- and TNF-alpha-mediated IkappaB-beta degradation and low levels of IkappaB-beta synthesis is likely to be the mechanism preventing NF-kappaB deactivation in asthmatic airways before granulocytic death.
During the first 10 years of its existence, the Department of Parasitology and Entomology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria, confirmed or described for the first time the occurrence of 25 different tick-borne parasites of domestic animals in the northern part of the country. Most of these organisms occur as inapparent infections but may serve as complicating factors in any adverse host condition. The transmission of Babesia bigemina by Boophilus decoloratus, Cowdria ruminantium by Amblyomma variegatum, and Borrelia anserina and Aegyptianella pullorum by Argas persicus was confirmed under Nigerian conditions.

Ultrasound examination allows the diagnostician to examine peripheral soft tissues and many internal organs in a noninvasive manner. In most instances, ultrasound can be utilized to complement other diagnostic aids, but its increased use has revealed the unique advantages of this technique over more established diagnostic tools. The ease with which ultrasound interpretation can be learned and the increased availability of instruments make this approach to diagnosis a valuable asset in the diagnosis of many equine medical diseases.
