This article will illustrate how effective hypnotic communication closely resembles the Haiku form. Working with the Haiku form is an effective and dynamic approach that encourages the therapists to keep their awareness sharpened and observation astute. Haiku is not just a type of poetry; it is a way of looking at the world with a heightened level of attentiveness. Crafting effective and evocative hypnotic suggestions requires that the therapist become immersed in the world of passion, images, sounds, sights, opposites, humor, creativity, and perceptive consciousness. Enhancing our skills of observation is an important aspect of the continuing experience of the hypnotherapist. The Haiku method can help us enhance our observation and utilize what we observe in developing evocative hypnotic suggestions that help the client access their internal representational systems to stimulate their healing response. A systematized method for learning to write Haiku is presented.

A Rorschach record and a narrative poem are examined to determine how imagination expresses the psychological trauma of being exposed as an impostor. The subject had been trained as a medical corpsman and deceived people under the grandiose fantasy of being a doctor. The role of the impostor physician is seen as an imaginative identity that was designed with an adaptive purpose. A Jungian analysis of his suicide attempt and the Rorschach suggest that the impostor role was a masculine compensatory fantasy that served as a counterforce to negative maternal imagery, linked to death, that is present in his imagination.
In this study, 24 professional writers completed a short pencil-and-paper questionnaire on which they indicated how they felt before, at a pause, and after specific writing episodes. The intensity with which they experienced 20 emotions was assessed, as was the frequency with which these emotions were experienced when writing in general. Results indicated that the professionals experienced positive emotions significantly more often when writing in general than they experienced either negative-active or negative-passive emotions. Negative-passive emotions such as boredom, shame, and shyness were particularly rare and weak. During the actual writing process, positive emotions tended to intensify, whereas negative-passive and negative-active emotions resisted change. Sponsorship of writing had little impact on the quality of emotions experienced during the process. The professional poets, however, experienced negative-active emotions significantly more often when writing in general than did the prose writers.
