There has been no consensus about the acute effect of cigarette smoking on cerebral blood flow, and the continuous change of flow in four cerebral vessel flow with peripheral flow during different kinds of cigarette smoking has not been reported until now. Our results indicate smoking increases the flow of four cerebral vessels almost at the same time and with the same pattern. Many cerebral vessels began to show increases about 10 s after commencement. In most cases, cerebral blood velocity began to decrease between 10 and 20 s after cessation. Blood flow in peripheral vessels decreases after commencement, which is thought to be the effect of nicotine. The effect of high nicotine cigarettes is greater than that of low nicotine cigarettes. Continuous and simultaneous measurement of cerebral vessels by ultrasonic Doppler is though to be the only way to establish the detailed blood flow changes during smoking.

Intravenous norepinephrine infusion test was performed in eight patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) supported by respirators and nine control subjects, to examine alpha-adrenoceptor function of peripheral resistant blood vessels. Baseline plasma norepinephrine concentrations in ALS patients were significantly higher than those in control subjects, indicating basal sympathetic hyperactivity (normal 218.2 +/- 59.7 pg/ml; ALS 450.0 +/- 288.4 pg/ml). The stimulus-response curves in the patients were similar to those in control subjects, and there were no significant differences between mean gains of the stimulus-response curves in both groups (normal 18.7 +/- 5.5; ALS 15.2 +/- 11.2). However, three ALS patients, two of whom had circulatory fluctuation and sympathetic hyperactivity, revealed lower gain levels than the mean minus 2 SD in control subjects (4.7, 1.1 and 3.7). This indicates hyposensitivity or down-regulation of the alpha-adrenoceptor function of peripheral blood vessels in these ALS patients. For early detection of sympathetic hyperactivity and prediction of circulatory collapse, it would be useful to measure the plasma norepinephrine concentration and the gain of the norepinephrine infusion curve in respirator-dependent ALS patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate blood vessel convergency (BVC) sign in the radiologic diagnosis of small peripheral lung cancer. METHODS: A prospective thin-section CT-pathology comparative study was done in 123 cases with solitary pulmonary nodules less than 3 cm in diameter including 83 peripheral lung cancera (adenocarcinoma 46, squamous-cell carcinoma 21, bronchiolo-alveolar-cell carcinomas 7, undifferentiated carcinoma 6, adenosquamous carcinoma 3) and 40 benign lesions. They were pathologically and clinically confirmed. Serial transverse sections of the surgically resected specimens were examined microscopically in 91 cases. Attention was focused on the imaging and histological manifestations of BVC. RESULTS: BVC was found in 54 (65.1%) peripheral lung cancers and in 8(20%) benign nodules (chi 2 = 22.75, P < 0.001). Histologically, the convergent vessels were shown to be dilated arterioles or venules. CONCLUSION: Blood vessel convergency can be regarded as a valuable sign for the diagnosis of small peripheral lung cancers.
In order to examine the structural and mechanical properties of the vessel wall resistance when subjected to autoregulatory flow control, a mechanical model for the vascular wall was derived from a mathematical model. The mechanical model was an analogue model which connected in series the Maxwell model (elastic modulus: K3) with the parallel elements of Hill's model (elastic modules: K2) and Hooke's elastic model (elastic modulus: K1); it was also mathematically equivalent to the Spring model (see part I). The structural and mechanical properties of the resistance vessel wall were characterized by the three elastic moduli (K1, alpha K2 and K3) [mmHg]. The parameter alpha was a modification factor of the elastic modulus K2 given by the myogenic mechanism. After a numerical analysis of the experimental data given by the mechanical model, we confirmed that the arterial pressure range for autoregulatory flow controls shifted to the upper region with an increase of the elastic modulus K1 and the flow regulation was reduced.
Five sonographic cases are presented with images that demonstrate normal arcuate arteries and peripheral uterine blood vessels. These vascular structures are shown in both the longitudinal and transverse sections, and should not be confused with pathology such as Nabothian cysts, hydrosalpinx, pelvic inflammatory disease, hydatid cysts of Morgagni, endometriosis, or abnormal pelvic varices.
Blood of rats and guinea pigs on cross-linked agarose coated activated charcoal (CAAC-II) hemoperfusion was analyzed over a follow-up period of 48 hours for the capacity of T-lymphocyte to transform under the stimulation of mitogen (PHA) in vivo and in vitro respectively. In the rate hemoperfusion, the in vivo T-lymphocyte transformation and lymphocyte count of peripheral blood were involved. In guinea pigs, the lymphocyte cultures were labelled with 3H-TdR and the radioactive incorporation was measured on the liquid scintillation counter. Our results revealed that the T-lymphocyte transformation function remained unchanged after 60-minute CAAC-II hemoperfusion although there was a transient and incomplete suppression of the T-lymphocyte transformation function both in vivo and in vitro immediately after the anesthesia and operation with blood vessel cannulation. The peripheral blood lymphocyte count also remained stable during the 60-minute CAAC-II hemoperfusion on rats and guinea pigs. We concluded that the charcoal hemoperfusion can be used as an important method of treatment for drug intoxication, uremia and hepatic coma with no harm to the body's immune function.
