Maoris take up the fight against ill health.

The beginnings of grass-roots primary care are taking shape in New Zealand's Maori community. By referring to a scheme initiated in the Waikato area, the authors explain the difficulties encountered by this ethnic minority in striving towards self-help in matters of health.

Assessment of the effects of socioeconomic factors on child mortality in the Amman upgrading areas, 1985.

"Data from the 1985 Amman Follow-Up Health and Population Survey are used to examine the association between child mortality and socioeconomic and environmental conditions which are directly influenced by...[government sponsored development activities]. Ordinary least squares regression is used in the analysis and the estimates show that the proportionate effects of mother's education, housing quality, water and electricity supply, availability of soap for handwashing and sewage connection are highly significant."

The population geography of Hong Kong, 1949-1981.

"This paper attempts a comprehensive account of the changes in population of Hong Kong in 1949-81. It has given detailed treatment to the two major factors: migration and natural growth, that underly such changes. The spatial process of population is also examined against the government's post-war urban development policies."

A note on intergenerational risk sharing and the design of pay-as-you-go pension programs.

"Different versions of pay-as-you-go public pension programs may have entirely different effects on the intergenerational distribution of income risk. If the pension benefit is a fixed proportion of previous labor income, a pay-as-you-go program increases the net income risk of all generations. On the other hand, a pay-as-you-go program characterized by a fixed labor income tax rate and uncertain pension benefits provides intergenerational risk sharing."
