[When to start orthodontic treatment].

We are frequently ashed by patient and dentist what the best age is to begin orthodontic treatment. In this article we will try to classify what the best age to begin treatment is, according to the type of malocclusion.

[The arrangement of trans-septal fibers in rotated and non-rotated emerged teeth in beagle dogs].

Transseptal fibers of the periodontal ligament are thought to play a role in relapse after orthodontic correction of rotated teeth. The aim of this study was to compare the location of the attachment site and the arrangement of the transseptal fibers in rotated emerged and non-rotated emerged teeth. In five dogs, unilaterally, the first upper premolars were reimplanted into a rotated position, before emergence. Histological evaluation showed that in the experimental as well as in the control specimens transseptal fibers developed. In all cases transseptal fibers bridged the shortest distance between two adjacent teeth. It was concluded that the attachment site of the transseptal fibers is not determined by tooth anatomy itself, but by the tooth position and its orientation in the dental arch during transseptal fiber development.

[Importance of posterior discrepancy in the development of skeletal Class III malocclusion].

The purpose of this communication is to explain regarding with relationship between the development of skeletal Class III malocclusion and the tooth-to-denture base discrepancy especially those in the posterior part of dentition (posterior discrepancy). Four cases which had skeletal Class III malocclusion and had experienced unsuccessful orthodontic correction were presented to evaluate the causative factors of skeletal Class III malocclusion. The observation of serial cephalograms led us to the conclusion that the continuous forward displacement of the mandible was associated with superversion of maxillary and/or mandibular molars caused by the "squeezing out" effect of poterior discrepancy. Moreover, superversion of molar provides a less steep maxillary occlusal plane in the denture frame. Accordingly, a vertical expression of the posterior discrepancy may provide one of the best explanation for development of skeletal Class III malocclusion.

[Evaluation of the results of the treatment of infections in newborn infants with developmental anomalies of the facial bones].

A clinical course and the results of treatment of infections in 53 neonates with visceral cranium defects are discussed. The analysis included the type of defect, immunity and the causes of therapeutical failures. Developmental defects of other organs coexisted with visceral Cranium defects in 45% of the neonates. High incidence of aspiration pneumonia (in 57%) with unfavourable prognosis (40%) was observed despite an intensive respiratory therapy including assisted ventilation. Therapeutical failures were caused by the coexistence of other developmental anomalies (found in 80% od deceased neonates) and low body weight at birth (35% of deaths). No immunological disorders were found except sporadic deficit of immunoglobulins and T-cells. Prophylaxis is of utmost importance. It includes: early orthodontic correction and introduction of the appropriate feeding technique at the neonatal wards.

[A ranking scale of the susceptibility to loss of various types of teeth as an additional aid to the decision for the extraction of permanent teeth in orthodontic treatments].

A statistically established rank scale of the predisposition to decay of the different types of teeth permits to evaluate more exactly the sacrifice of masticatory units in orthodontically indicated tooth extraction. Thus, in case of doubt, it gives additional advice on the choice of the teeth to be removed.
