Antitumoral property of ethanolic extract of propolis in mice-bearing Ehrlich carcinoma, as compared to bleomycin.

Antitumoral effect of ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) was demonstrated in mature mice-bearing Ehrlich carcinoma. Survival rate after EEP treatment was compared to that of bleomycin, given alone or in combination every two days for 36 days and followed up for 14 additional days. The survival rate at 50 days was 55% after EEP and 40% after bleomycin, while all the mice-treated with EEP + bleomycin combination demonstrated shorter survival than the controls. It is concluded that while the in vivo activity of bleomycin is reduced in the presence of cytochrome-C-reductase inhibitors (like some of the EEP components are), the antitumoral property of EEP in the tumored animal model studied is significant and lasting.

Potent free radical scavenging activity of propol isolated from Brazilian propolis.

We evaluated free radical scavenging activity of the water, methanol and chloroform extracts of propolis in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical and xanthine-xanthine oxidase (XOD) generated superoxide anion assay systems. The free radical scavenging activity guided fractionation and chemical analysis led to the isolation of a new compound, propol (3-[4-hydroxy-3-(3-oxo-but-1-enyl)-phenyl]-acrylic acid) from the water extract, which was more potent than most common antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) in these assay systems.

Isolation and characterization of cytotoxic diterpenoid isomers from propolis.

The methanol extract of Brazilian propolis was fractionated by HPLC, based on HuH13 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) cell cytotoxicity assay. Two isomers of diterpenoid with a molecular formula of C20H30O3 (MW: 318.46) were isolated. The structures of these colorless compounds were determined as clerodane diterpenoids (I, 15-oxo-3, 13Z-kolavadien-17-oic acid; II, 15-oxo-3Z, 13E-kolavadien-17-oic acid).

Correlation between virulence of various strains of mycobacteria and their susceptibility to ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP).

Ethanol extract of propolis (EEP) has antibacterial, antiviral, antiprotozoal and antifungal properties, in addition to many biological effects. Our laboratory has demonstrated a synergistic effect of EEP and antibiotics on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, and suggested that the bactericidal effect of EEP was expressed mainly on virulent mycobacteria rather than on non-virulent (attenuated) ones. The present study was designed to reconfirm the latter finding, by subjecting 17 different mycobacteria strains to EEP, and evaluating whether there is a correlation between the virulence of the mycobacteria strains studied and their susceptibility to EEP. Our findings demonstrate that while the four non-virulent strains studied are not susceptible to EEP, out of the 13 virulent strains studied seven are susceptible and six are resistant to it. These results suggest that while there is no full correlation between virulence of the mycobacteria tested and their susceptibility to EEP, the few strains that were resistant to EEP were non-virulent.

Phytochemical, morphological, and biological investigations of propolis from Central Chile.

Propolis from central Chile was investigated for its plant origin by microscopical analysis of pollen grains and leaf fragments found in the sample. The pollen grains that appear with significant higher frequency in the sample corresponded to four native and two introduced species, whereas leaf fragments corresponded to four native species. Seventeen phenolic compounds that belong to the phenylpropane, benzaldehyde, dihydrobenzofuran, or benzopyran classes, were isolated from an organic extract that was found to have a moderate growth inhibitory activity against Mycobacterium avium, M. tuberculosis, and two strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The components responsible for activity were determined.

Propolis from the Mediterranean region: chemical composition and antimicrobial activity.

The chemical composition of propolis from Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Algeria was investigated by GC-MS. All of them contained mainly flavonoids and esters of caffeic and ferulic acids, which indicated that their main source are buds of poplars of the taxonomic section Aegieros. Some Turkish samples contained a low percent of diterpenic acids, while in Algerian samples significant amounts of a hydroxyditerpenic acid (M=322, its structure not determined by its MS) were found. All samples showed significant antibacterial and weak to moderate antifungal activity.

Polyisoprenylated benzophenones in cuban propolis; biological activity of nemorosone.

The Copey tree (Clusia rosea) has a large distribution in Cuba and its floral resin is a rich source of polyisoprenylated benzophenones. To determine the presence of these natural products, we carried out a study by HPLC of 21 propolis samples produced by honey bees (Apis mellifera) from different provinces of Cuba. Nemorosone resulted to be the most abundant polyisoprenylated benzophenone and the mixture of xanthochymol and guttiferone E was also observed, but in minor proportion. We studied the biological activity of the pure natural product nemorosone and its methyl derivatives. We found that nemorosone has cytotoxic activity against epitheloid carcinoma (HeLa), epidermoid carcinoma (Hep-2), prostate cancer (PC-3) and central nervous system cancer (U251). It also exhibited antioxidant capacity. Methylated nemorosone exhibited less biological activity than the natural product.

[Method of determining the antimicrobial activity of alcohol extracts of propolis].

It is proposed to determine the antimicrobial activity of propolys alcohol extracts by the method of subsequent dilutions in solid nutrient media. Dilution of the extracts immediately in hot agar eliminated the inhibiting effect of the extragent on the microbial growth. Opalesence appearing in the agar did not prevent estimation of the results in contrast to the method of subsequent dilutions in liquid nutrient media.

Inhibitory effect of propolis and bee venom on the mutagenicity of some direct- and indirect-acting mutagens.

The antimutagenic effect of ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) and honeybee (Apis mellifera) venom, both collected in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, was assessed by the Salmonella/microsome assay upon direct- and indirect-acting mutagens. EEP had inhibitory effect (in an ascending order) on the mutagenicity power of daunomycin (TA102), benzo(a)pyrene (TA100), and aflatoxin B(1)(TA98) and the venom acted against the mutagenicity of 4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine (TA98) and daunomycin (TA102). A clinical study of a silicate toothpaste with extract from propolis.

Propolis is bee-produced substance with pronounced anti-inflammatory effect. It is an ingredient of many drugs; it is added to toothpastes as a prophylactic component for periodontal diseases. The plaque-cleaning, plaque-inhibiting and anti-inflammatory actions of the silicate paste were studied. The study included 42 individuals in good clinical health and a minimum of 20 intact teeth - 11, 16, 24, 31, 36, 46. Control exams were performed on days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28. The baseline values gradually decreased after each control tooth brushing with a statistically significant difference between them. The toothpaste shows very good plaque-cleaning, plaque-inhibiting and anti-inflammatory effect.

Anti-oxidant property of ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) as evaluated by inhibiting the chemiluminescence oxidation of luminol.

Ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) has remarkable medical properties, including protection of mice against gamma irradiation. Its anti-oxidative effect has been attributed to its radical scavenging ability. This manuscript demonstrates the ability of increasing amounts of EEP to inhibit luminol-H2O2 chemiluminescence in vitro, and suggests that its anti-oxidative capacity is partly due to its high content of flavonoids.

[Clinical trial with a preparation based on propolis "propolisina" in human giardiasis].

The results of a clinic assay with an extract made out of propolis (bee glue) or "Propolisina" were showed with the aim of showing its effectivity against giardiasis. One hundred and thirty eight patients were studied 48 children and 90 adults, in 2 groups and they selected aleatorily to be treated with "Propolosina" or an imidazole derivate (tinidazole). The method for an exact diagnosis in children was duodenal aspiration and in adults duodenal mucosa frotis by means of duodenoscopy. Similar studies were carried out as a cure criterium in a 5-day term after being through with the treatment. Propolisina was used with different concentrations: in children (concentration at 10%) results showed a 52% cure. In 40 adults (concentration at 20%) it was obtained a similar result to that of tinidazole; and when propolisina concentration was elevated at 30% in the remaining 50 patients there was a higher effectivity (60 of cure Vs 40% with tinidazole). This work shows the success of this natural product, which is very easy to obtain in Cuba and with no side effects in the treatment of this intestinal parasitism, what is of great economical importance for our countries.

[Vitamin E and propolis as antioxidants after excessive administration of polyunsaturated fatty acids].

Polyunsaturated fatty acids included into animals' ration (10% of linethol) intensified lipid peroxidation and increased the activity of cathepsin D, an enzyme responsible for protein and lipid degradation in the cell. Vitamin E stabilized the impaired processes. Biologically active complex of propolis produced a similar effect, however, decreased protein synthesis and a tendency to animals' body mass increment have evidenced a more pronounced antioxidative action as compared to that of vitamin E.

[Propolis as an inhibitor of free radical lipid oxidation in salmonellosis].

Lipid peroxidation was activated in salmonellosis. Content of hydroperoxides and malonic dialdehyde was increased in mice liver tissue. At the same time, the activity of antioxidative enzymes was altered. Continuous administration of propolis stabilized lipid peroxidation, thus suggesting that the substance could be used as a drug in medicine.
